There was a phase in wushu competition where they required thicker and heavier swords. ua-cam.com/video/jbcgKdTkTd0/v-deo.html for example They stopped doing it because it ended up being pretty bad for people’s wrists. It also just isn’t as exciting without the sounds. The general idea, is wushu forms as a sport, so it's ok to change things up to make apparatus safer and more appropriate for sports (think how different weapons are in fencing and archery for example).

real broad swords like that are heavier, would like to see someone do a form like that with a real broad sword.
