Aimi is 16 years old here. I think she is playing this sonata to perfection!

Aimi's interpretation shows that she understands the music very well. If she was playing Chopin's Etude in F minor at the age of five like a professional, surely she has a musical and technical grasp that is more then sufficient for this piece - an awesome performance indeed!!

Perfect Aimi, The feeling you put into the third movement would have brought tears to the eyes of Chopin himself! You are Japan's gift to the musical world. Bravo!

👫 One of the truly great videos on the World Wide Web! 👫 The guy figure here is for 17 year old Chopin who wrote the piece. The Female figure represents Aimi who is 16. Great music, great story, great video.

"Mindless playing"? "Totally uninspiring?" "Just another meaningless pianist"? You've gotta be joking. This, my friend, is utterly inspiring, very thoughtful and meaningful playing.
That you fail to see that is sad. That your comment somehow became the most highly voted is even more sad. Thumbs up if you think this performance is excellent!

I commented on the decision made by the judges at the 5th International Chopin Competition in Asia and the presumptioness of the Polish Government. I am in the majority of people who enjoy the playing of Miss Kobayashi and you are in the minority. I have also developed some very good egg recipes in my 71 years of life and I have learned to follow the rule of, if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything.

mattlung2002, According to the Piano Society,
'Chopin composed his Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35 ("Funeral March") mainly in 1839 at Nohant near Chateauroux in France, although the funeral march third movement had been composed as early as 1837.' So he was actually in his late 20s.

Lua 3648 what "insights" am I missing that might lead my evaluation to coincide with yours? I've only heard the 1st two mv.s so far, and I detect no sign of this sonata being too difficult for her. To the contrary, she amazes me with her technical control in several passages (I've played it), esp. some 'knotty' spots in the Scherzo.
I see very little missing in musical maturity. this little gal has been play the piano "professionally" since she was three. I wish my 9 years of Professional degree study would have imparted the musical finesse she has achieved at an age 5 times

My problem with your comment is that it was not "constructive criticism" - constructive criticism is thoughtful, nuanced, and specific, while your comment was extreme and vague. Go listen to a MIDI file of this sonata. Now THERE you have an example of "no creativity or individualism". I do know other performances of this piece, and I'm not suggesting that Aimi's performance comes close to the best. It is, however, it very good for a 16 year old aspiring professional.

I agree with you that this is a little too soft performance.
But I don't think it is so big issue considering her age.
She has captured a lot of important nuances and expressed them very well in my opinion, with the excellent technique.
I'd rather bet she will become a masterful pianist in the future.

Expression is also far beyond the averate of her age.
From now on, she may have meny friends, new teachers, new love affairs, departures, adventures sometimes parting, lost of love, and so on.
Shi is jast 16 yo. At this point, I can say just splendid!
Don't be bothered overwilling comment. Just play, study, love,,,,

Yes Klaus-she is already a sensitive artist and growing virtuoso-akin I think to young Tiffany Poon.
The future of live classical piano has never been so secure in changing times-despite the marketing and media they all must endure in our 'connected' days.
There will be the inevitable comparisons with greats of the past by our more pompous or prejudiced-when those greats (that we will always have anyway) should only be incentives to their growth-not determiners or detriments to it...

I love watching and listening to Aimi. This is one of my favorite piece and I listen to my CD frequently. I don't want to be too tough here, but I don't really feel the "Funeral" yet as I listen to Athur Rubinstein or some others. I hear the SMOOTHNESS of the sad music on this interpretation. I would love to have the more sad, sorrow, dragging and anger fingers. I believe this piece should be played a bit different from other Chopin's pieces to make it "Funeral".

I give up. I've been trying to find defects, but I do not find them. No wonder. If at 4 or 5 years, she already played incredibly... But this is too much. I've heard dozens of versions of my favorite sonata by best pianists, and I sincerely believe that the one of Aimi no detract at all from that of any of them. A work of this magnitude, depth and dramatism!

    Fantastisch!

No,because when you play this piece, especially for public, you should be ready for it.This is not just a virtuous Etude and no yearning salon music, either, but this needs a serious interpretation which means musical understanding and maturity. I was simply shocked about comments such as "only Horowitz played better" etc. I don't want to achieve anything for myself here, if you think so.The fact is that I just know this piece very well and deeply respect it. It was all in the service of music.

Thanks for your replys - i only do not agree that she has a long way to go musically - here i must say that only Horowitz sometimes maked better in musical direction. She is victim of a lot of envy from elder pianists that can not reach her. After my opinion she regardless her young age understand the music and bring both light and dark fairytales to surface in her piano playing. - Well - i made think i made my pint:)

Its not so easy to act your way through this serious sonata as she did in Nocturnes and other smaller Chopin pieces... But its really good for her age anyways... Plus she is not really selling music, rather her acting as Britney Spears of piano playing...

  • @WJE37FCSM
    @WJE37FCSM 12 років тому

My complaint is not with Aimi or Yuja but with Chopin. Many a time this sonata began and I wondered what was playing til the funeral march kicked in. The 3 outer movements require almost as much concentration from the listener as from the performer, not so the march, that grabs you. The ending reminds me of Puccini's Missa De Gloria. Between the Credo and Sanctus he was thunder-struck by Verdi whereupon he tacked on the ending so that he could get on with the murder and mayhem of his operas.

Yes, It really makes you wonder what the judges were thinking when eight years ago, in 2004, she won the Gold prize at 1st and 2nd grade Elementary School level in the 5th International Chopin Piano Competition in ASIA. You are certainly entitled to your opinion but if you check the comments on most of her videos you will discover that the majority of viewers agree with my opinion. Of course we could all be wrong. Let's just wait and see how she does in her upcoming competition.

Why so negative? How can we ask for maturity of a 16 year old performer? Chopin's sonata # 2 is a very complex work to put together. I have recently gone through 51 of the available renditions ( there are about 90) and you would be surprised how different all the recordings are executed by the most accomplished pianists. So what is a Chopinese interpretation? Taste is relative. I do think Aimi Kobayashi excels in the scherzo and has given us proof of a very gifted artist.

Well, I don't want to argue. Every pianist has the right to choose how he should play. I just remarked that I don't see new visions or thoughts here and the darkness and despair of this sonata - for me - is missing. For me there is too much softened tone, which leads to the prejudice that Chopin is just a yearning piano romanticist.
The deeper understanding of Chopin isn't there - not yet.

You are right,I never doubted Aimi's technics are incredible for her age.She IS musical, yes, she can play very softly with a beautiful romantic tone but it all sounds flat.you know, Chopin wasn't like that. There are no edges,no new ideas,as I already said, her phrasing is obvious.I don't like this approach to music, when child prodigies have to get through the hardest pieces ever written, pieces they dont understand. This piece deserves a good rendition,no matter what age the musician has.

This is not unusual for such a young age,but it is quite clear Aimi's teacher has set his sights too high. It seems to me that today young pianists are obliged to play the hardest masterpieces of the piano repertoire as early as possible although they in most caes are not ready for them at all. This sonata needs more than fast fingers and rubato. Again, this is just my opinion.
