- Study this MAOIs mnemonic and other NCLEX mnemonics with Pixorize.
MAOIs are a class of antidepressants and include the drugs isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and tranylcypromine. These drugs are used to treat depression, although they are not first-line treatments due to their side effects and dangerous food and drug interactions. Notably, MAOIs can cause a hypertensive crisis, especially if patients consume foods containing tyramine, like wine, cheese, and processed meats. MAOIs can also cause serotonin syndrome, a life-threatening condition resulting from overload of serotonin signaling. As such, MAOIs should not be given within 14 days of taking any other serotonin-altering drug.

Did you read the book at all? Are you in LPN or Rn program?
@@jaymorgan. I'm in the RN program. I read the book but the videos help me to remember better.
@@cameshadaley-barrett8171 I think watching the video helps me understand and memorize it better as well. Best of luck to you!

Such a huge help for us visual learners!!
this is a good one, but I wish they had also included selegiline
MAOIs in the video is non selective inhibitors. Unlike selegine which is a selective MAO-B inhibitor for parkinson. This is what i know. Correct me if im wrong. 😊
I very like it, thanks. That helped my understanding of the drugs.

Wait. Isn’t MAOI also one that can cause anticholinergic effects?
روعه
Taking these with lots of tyramine in food or anything phenethylamine- amphetamine like can put someone's blood pressure in stroke territory. 🤔
It’s too bad that Maois aren’t used more. Phenelzine is the only thing that works for me. The food/medication problems have been minimal. I have a medication that I take if I have a problem, which is very rare.
What medication is that?
This may be very colourful and very catchy but much of the information in it needs modifying or correcting. As a world expert in this field, I suggest you look at information on this contained on my website.
I've never seen mirtazapine prescribed without an accompanying SSRI or SNRI medication, why is that if they can cause serotonin syndrome
