The Real Steel Rokot Pocketknife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

- Today, we'll take a look at a sleek big old knife, that's actually quite well done, the Real Steel and Ivan Braginets 'Rokot', focusing here on two exclusives from www.lamnia.com/
(Sorry, for whatever reason, the Promo-code thing wasn't something they ended up doing. But you can go to Lamnia and pick one up anyways!)
Thanks Nick for a great review of my knife. Shake your hand! Regards, Ivan.
"you pull this out in the lunchroom and Edna's diving under the table and calling HR" I'm dead 😂😂
"Rokot" translates as "rumble" or "roar " from Russian
I dont get the dislike for N690. I think is often overvalued by the italian makers, but on a kizer vanguard for sub-$100 knives...I really like it
Totally agree, on a sub-100 knife it's perfectly acceptable, I've never been underwhelmed by it. I think it's a great steel for a $50 (or under) knife, I'm very happy to see Kizer standardize on it for their cheaper models.
It’s like a poor man’s Shirogorov -even uses flathead hardware...
Good observation.
$120 for CF and s35vn?
ZT's gonna have to stop charging $250 soon.....
Edit: flatheads sitting in all different directions annihilates my knife OCD
I think zt being heavy duty and american made...still overcharges for s35. Gotta agree.
I use lamnia all the time, they're very good- I've never had a problem with either their service or products sent to me, and the couple of chocolates added to the box is a nice touch! Would recommend any time.
I have the same experience with them, here in Europe they are one of only 4 dealers I use regularly.
@@jessemijnders same here, I live in Ireland and probably use the same sites as you, they're good but it'd be nice to have companies like the KnifeCenter or Bladehq in Europe for the choice. Happy hunting!
@@robertglascott5321 yup, that would be nice, I have ordered from DLT trading before, but the import costs are just too high.
@@jessemijnders yeah, I ordered from the states once as well. The knives arrived followed by an import bill that cost nearly the same as the knives. It's still tempting when you see something not available over here though!
@@jessemijnders Can you tell me which one is the other 3? I also live in Europe. :)
This went from Nordic to Slavic pretty quickly.
Seems like with the exclusive from Lamnia comes the discontinuation of the standard Rokot. Too bad. Love my good 'ole G10 with N690. You'll need to take that dis on the Italian steel up with Mr. Cove, as 90% of his Bastinelli offerings come in N690, perhaps for better margins? Not sure. 🤔👍
BTW, factoid: Ivan replied to my Rokot review to state that the Morse code spells out his name, in Russian 😁, his native language.
Nick seems to be fine with VG10 on overpriced Spydies from Japan tho🤔
Not an Italian steel but the steel treatment factory in Maniago is very good at hardening it.
Ivan commented on another video that a new version of the Rokot has been in production since the end of last year and he hopes it will be released soon. He made modifications to the design, including fixing Nick’s complaint about providing better access to the lockbar.
@@albert9773 And there is!
My good friend, thank God, they did not give up the knife, a new batch is already in production.
Looks like everybody gets 10% off right now. That's a promo code right there.
Lamnia is a great retailer! And they ship free to most countries around the globe...
Btw this knife looks gorgeous in this configuration and is a good deal at this price point.
I think I'll pass, though the design is rather attractive and the size I like.
The discolouration looks like heat to me. At a guess, they do the heat treat a bit closer to final grind dimensions than most brands and so it retains some of the tempering colour even after the blade gets its final finishing grind - personally I'd kinda like it, although I get why it could be divisive.
Also I might be totally wrong 😛
why is torx better?
Love my Lamnia exclusive Rokot! Has multi row ceramic bearings as well. Gives off budget Shiogorov vibes. Love the counter sunk flat head screws, very Slavic design language.
ive got the discontinued full blackish m390 version new with box and papers for sale in USA 250 shipped if anyones looking.
The best line I think I’ve have heard in a long time and made me nearly spit my drink over the iPad ( According to this particularly picky bastard right here ) absolute poetry Nick thank you very kindly for the review bet even more for the words of poetry 😂😂😘👍
Really cool, something a little different!
Torille
Though this is also a front flipper, I mostly prefer the thumb studs, which are also the blade stops.
Not "RokOt" but "ROkot". It means "Roll, boom, rumble".
Looks like a kitchen knife
Unfortunate you missed the fact you can catch the tip of the blade when it is closed. Another quarter centimeter of back spacer and it could be avoided. I love the design of this knife and still carry it, but people should be aware of the risk.
I have the lesser steel g10 version- great knife. Just got another real steel by braginets, the Akuma. Very cool also. Great function and not the same old stuff 👍🏽
Иван Брагинец задизайнил замечательный нож!
Thank you buddy. I appreciate your appreciation!
lol... I'm sure Sabertooth need to carry a pocket knife
yea it all TACTICAL thisTACTICAL that like the look of this knife
It is shown as discontinued or sold out on any American dealer for the n690 version. Do we know if this is going to be a lamina exclusive model instead of sku now?
Edit: a year later and I've finally purchased one. I stand with Ukraine 🇺🇦🇺🇦
A new batch of N390 will be ready soon.
This is a pretty nice design but Korolev is still the best Chief Designer from Ukraine.
Definitely, but I think Koshkin (the designer of the T-34 tank) is definitely not worse than Koralev.
Looks good but tooo big!! Make a mini!!!
The Morse code is an interesting idea, but I don't like it aesthetically at all. It really detracts from the natural patterns in the carbon fiber. Seems like a good knife if you liked the looks though.
M390 does that when it's not processed well from belts heating up the m390and discoloring. I think it's when they either overheat grinding and then polish it out or it happens during polishing. I have heard both explanations. I just checked my m390 micartamorph and can't detect any.
Iv heard people call the marbled carbon fiber "forged carbon" which I find kinda funny because its just chop strand and can be injection molded (just like fiberglass in plastics)
Color chanes may be due to the heated up blade material while they are made - grinded/polished?
Perfect size great shape. I like it. The color is the straw color from the tempering. They purposefully didn't polish it out to help it hid use marks.
What happened to the top Rokot!? Is it rusting?
You talking about the scales? 😂 they look dirty for sure
It's still got the color from the tempering.

Is this the part where I say "FIRST!!!" jk jk. This knife looks lovely but i just don't see it being something i want for my collection. No clue why, just doesn't stick out to me as something that would bring additional joy to my collection. It ticks a number of boxes, really wonder why it just doesn't interest me lol. Great review Nick!
How is the blade centered? Any blade play or lock rock? They are on sale on site. Great review as always
Is anyone else just kinda bored of liner locks? I've noticed for the past year I'm never looking at them. I'm always searching for weird mechanisms like ball bearing locks and stuff like the buck marksman.
I haven't bought a liner lock in a long time. However, I recently did order a linerlock ckf fif20 because it just looks so much better than the framelock.
Yeah kinda. I like it better than frame lock, but I much prefer something I can close faster. Compression lock seems to be my favorite now. Open fast, close fast.
@@emersonb5764 you are going to think this is dumb but I've started disliking compression locks because they are basically upside down liner locks
@@lobotomite9767 I can see that
@@emersonb5764 I currently love the Scorpion lock
Flathead you can open with any piece of steel that will be at hand.
Nick is really leaning into the design element of how the liners look. Not a bad thing, just a definite trend I'm seeing.
The blade shape is similar to the Real Steel G3 Pukko Light, not a bad thing.
Am I actually looking at a knife with countersunk flathead screws? My god, what were they thinking?
Yep, same as Shirogorov. It's a Russian, Ukrainian, Slavic thing.
I really like the design, for some reason it gives be shiro vibes though I can’t pick out exactly why. It’s probably too big for me but it looks great!
Look up the Shirogorov Pero
Thanks for sharing 👍🏼😊
Reminds me a lot of the Kizer Domin
I wanted the G-10 (or maybe its FRN) one but its been discontinued. :(
You are wrong. It's just that the first batch was quickly sold out. The new batch will be ready soon.
@@ivarkobalt1764 seriously?! Yay!! thanks for the info
They should do these in a mini
Agreed ben1354, a mini would be sweet, especially if they would do it with a 3.25" (or so) blade
No! No more freaking minis! Use a standard size knife!
@@The4cp I don't need a 4 inch knife. Why would me using a 3 inch bade bother you?
@@fatmanandschizard Everything has its time. Have patience, my friends.
@@ivarkobalt1764 my guy you have me excited
What is N690 comparable to?
VG-10
Not as corrosion resistant as VG-10 but a bit tougher in edge holding. Some people think of it as a step up from VG-10, but not really.
@David P. Thanks for the info @david P. Was going to pick up a N690 knife a few months back but was told it was more rust prone than VG10.
Its say SOS Lol
It most definitely does not say SOS
Reminds me of my Enzo Birk(Puukko folder s30V)with space blade/ scales and slightly better steel s35n version ,,,,but ..... What do you not like about N690 ?
If there is a 3 in blade ver that would be awesome.
It’s a carbon fiber rat 2 lol.
The blade is more "puukko" style that the rats.
Probably more Rat 1 in terms of size. Sort of a flat grind pukko ?
The browness in the steel is from 2 things, poor heat treat, and cheap metal. You my friend, have been scammed.
Oh? Interesting. How to prove that it is the heat treat? Cutting tests?
Could just be them not completely polishing the color off from the heat treatment. It'd probably come out with a bit of sanding and repolishing the blade but thats pretty pricey for a bad finish.
@@gaberoo9099 straw yellow is normal for heat treating knives. Just gotta sand that off and they missed a spot. I'm not a maker so I could be wrong though I'd like to start making them soon enough.
@@BMikeAD Thanks kindly for the input. As I said, if I'm spending upwards of 100$, it will be towards a non-China knife (if S90V is what i want, I will go either Spyderco or Manly knives from Bulgaria...the heat treat and blade geometry is supposedly awesome).
What does the Morse code on the side say?
Did some research, it's the designers name.
