Aristophanes' speech is excellent. It's nothing short of a gem. Seeing your UA-cam classes on The Symposium actually prompted me to reading it. I thank you for that and your lectures. I really appreciate it.
You're very welcome! Yes, it is quite interesting - it is in a sense Aristophanes' speech, but it's definitely Plato's own speech, in an Aristophanean vein
I have a background in classics, and an interesting angle of approach to the study of the ancients is the compare/contrast thing. They are a lot like us in many ways, but radically different (even "weird") in others. It's good to understand the important differences between their worldview and ours, while pointing out the similarities, and this comes across very clearly in this lecture. They were like us, yet they weren't. The similarities make them comprehensible, but the differences are what make them interesting and "new" even after all these years. :-)
This is so much more interesting to listen to and read at the same time! I have a better understanding of the Symposium now because of the lecture! Thank you for taping your class. it really helped me in my Love & Sex class! Keep up the phiosophy lectures!
We've got a free webinar and intensive online seminars coming up this week about the Symposium - you might check those out - info up on those in a few days
Hi Dr. Sadler, I am very happy and thankful for posting your lectures. Great resource and show your a NOBLE MAN! I am going to be vloging and posting videos, including Audiobooks. I recently recorded Erximachus and his speech, my intent is to record the entire Symposium. Please check out my recording and let me know what you think, it may provide a valuable resource for your students. Thank you again, Kevin.

We continue through the Symposium in our Intro class, discussing the three middle speeches by Eryximachus, Aristophanes, and Agathon

Yep -- if we wanted to be tongue in cheek, we could say: they were just like us. . . except where they weren't!

I might be the only one suspicious of your cup
You'd be suspicious of a cup that I've long since lost. . . .
Gregory B. Sadler I was only suspicious because the cup looks edited or something LOL
