ik this is a slightly old video, but as a disabled person (radial club hands) I've never been able to use any type of controller. The switch in handheld mode is fine, but I wouldn't be able to play it when docked and detached joy cons, I've been searching for a replacement and no disability accessible controllers are quite what I needed. I just needed something that would lay flat on a table. Thank you for this!! literal career saver lol (I'm wanting to record my switch and make UA-cam videos)

I owned the Hori's Split Pad Pros for a long time now and I love their back buttons so much that I needed to turn it into a normal controller. Nintendo has an OFFICIAL USB charging grip and I'm wondering if I can use that to give the split pads a wired communication so that they don't have to be connected to the switch tablet. If so, then they can be used in TV mode. The handles get in the way but your video will fix that. I just hope the USB communicates rather than just sends power.

I'm looking a video like this. I would like change the color of my handgrips. I thought than in the inside of the grip had some cables but only have the lights. Nice video ❤
What size/type of Tri Wing do you need?? Because I bought one and it's either too big/small because it's just stripping the screws and won't turn xx

Same problem here! I have Tri-Wing screwdriver that is working fine for the screws on the back of the grip, and the screws on the Joy-Cons themselves, but the screws on the inside of the grip are just being stripped! :/
Becca Goodson the sizes are 0 and 00. the ones that I purchased off of eBay were all the same size and it worked for both without striping any. you might need to get a security bit set that will have the y0 and y00 sizes.
Joshua Birnholz , try buying the generic grip from ebay. it just has the four screws on back, and uses the cross screws.
i know it's 10 mos. ago but if anyone's reading this still you should use a rubber band between the screwdriver head and screw. just screw the rubber band into the screw and it'll act as a grip so it won't strip. nintendo makes those screws INSANELY soft. it's incredible how easy they are to strip.

I had to drill a hole in the inside of the case where the joycons go. You cant see it now, but it took 2 hours. ( one screw stripped terribly bad )
I really like how this turned out though, I love the way it looks and feels in your hand, so much better than the original grip

Spintechfilms yes, I loved throwing the connector in the mesh pocket of the official carrying case for when I would play in kickstand.
My dog chewed up my grip so this is actually a win-win for me
What number of Tri wing did you use? I have Y00 and does not work

thats the exact idea i have in mind, only with modifying the generic grip, much easier and basic to disasemble.
Do you have an information of what size of screwdriver to get? Because I bought a 1.5mm tri-wing, it can open joy-con screws but it can strip comfort grip's screws. Can I use 2mm or 2.5mm instead?
Got to the last 2 screws before it was completely dissembled, and they were stripped before I even started taking it apart, so I tried putting it back together, and now when I slide my joycons in, they're wobbly. Any advice?

I actually tried to do it today but the tri wing screws wont budge, did you have a similar issue and used more force to remove them? If not my screw driver might not be good enough quality
i tried doing this but the triwing screwed started breaking down when i tried to take them out
EDIT: nvm i got it figured out after reading some comments :P now I've realised how wobbly my joy cons are
I wish there was a way to attach something like the Joycon grips to individual Joycons for that extra grip no matter if you use the separately, on the Switch on that modified grip you just showed
Samu Rönkkö there is a mod for this. it involves cutting the grip handle in half and gluing or magnetizing the handles to the joy cons. maybe I can do a video on that in the future.

push tight and go slow you will strip them if your're not careful

I didnt have a tri wing screwdriver so i had to spend 2hrs trying to find out how to pry it apart. I ended up just hitting it with a hammer until it worked

Definitely not always reversible. Screws were way too “on there” destroyed the tops trying to get them out. Had to buy a new one, and it was more successful. Although the joy cons rattle like no body’s business

Can you do this mod with the charging grip?
mccordj3413 looking at the dissassembly video of the charging grip, it appears all the necessary components for charging are in the middle piece so this mod should be doable on a charging grip.

I don't have a video for it, but I did it with my own Charging Grip. It's the same process. Just don't touch any of the circuitry inside and you'll be fine. Works like a dream for me.

Bought a set of triwing screws. Tried to unscrew it and then I ended up stripping the screws so no u wasted $10

Was just searching web for a grip with no ‘wings’ because of this issue, glad I found your video, thanks! Btw, if anyone has a PowerA grip, its even easier, just four phillips unscrewed on back and wings come off.

The grips he is using prevent you from using the connector unless you take off the handles.
Collin Scherber For me there was three reasons.
1. The joy-con covers can't be used with the joy con grip and since I mostly play in handheld mode I don't want to have to remove them to in the less frequent times I play docked.
2. The grip can now fit in my case and come with me for when I play in tabletop mode.
3. I didn't like the handles because they way it caused me to hold the grip I would frequently hit the R button and throw my good weapons away in Zelda.
Kenneth Mitchell but arent the grips only useful for detatched joycons? I have a hard time believing that those grips together are more comfortable than the grip they provide you.
Collin Scherber maybe they aren't more comfortable this way but it makes it more convenient I suppose so you aren't always taking off the covers
