ahaha sorry guys, I guess I never actually explained WHY our cats have a cage for people who haven't watched those vids before!
Our cats love watching the birds, our neighbors, whatever going on outside. It's WAY too dangerous to let them go out by themselves though because 1) There is no safe spot for anyone at all to play here--there are only streets and parking lots, and 2) There are a TON of stray cats that we can sometimes hear fighting. Just nope nope nope, our cats aren't going outside unless they're in a cage. They usually ask to go in the cage by pawing or meowing at the door, and then they meow again to come back inside (usually between 20 min to 2 hours later). Sometimes if they're being super butt heads we'll just put them out there so we can get a little work done. :p But anyway, they love it. We're not just locking our cats away or anything lol

I understand the idea behind the cage. If I ever get the chance to have a cat (which would involve moving house) I would look into enclosure options as well. Maybe Australian suburbia is not as close-packed as Tokyo apartments, but there are issues of cats predating on native wildlife, plus safety of not letting them get onto roads.
Didn’t know other countries did this. Not much of a thing in Britain. Our cats go out during the day and we usually have cat flaps or windows left open for them. When we live in flats we just leave the doors propped open so the cats can go out. Everyone does it though so everyone is aware of why the doors are propped open in flats. Although I can’t say the same for sky rise flats. I’ve only lived in 3 storey flats before.

In america the mentality is "people get paid to clean that up, you don't want to take away their job do you?" The reality is "Of course people get paid to clean it up! Why do you want to make their job harder for them?" Haha. If you can clean as much as you can then the janitors have an easier time. lol
Japanese value cleanliness very much, even students clean the toilet after each use.

I dont think its necessarily a japanese thing, I was raised to clean up after myself as well xD and I live in Europe
In America, cleaning up after yourself is a general rule in a workshop, especially if sawdust is involved. It can be a hazard not to.

I believe Rachel was in the military for a while (correct me if I’m wrong) so that would explain her handiness. I really love how she takes everything on and gets creative because I don’t have those life skills lol

I can see why Poki isn't as common in the Jun's kitchen videos. He is too excited hahaha. The white DIY units definitely look stronger than what was already in place though good work!

Although most people have basic power tools anyway. And for those who don't I know a lot of places that will do free tool rental where you put in a deposit and when you bring the tool back you get the whole deposit back
In England, they have a sort of workshop but instead of the shoppers doing it themselves, there's someone who works there that does it for you as long as you provide like what you actually want to do.

Poki got so round!!! 😱 it is either because he is Siamese (mine is chubby as well) or because he is a rescue. Rescue cats tend to eat a lot because they don’t know when they will get food again.

I have had many cages over the years, all needing something because the community of rescues here was incredible. We would usually get the animals from a vet or the utility company pole workers would have the list of animals and who they would go to. So, in time I had repaired many cages and I always recommend you use Dishwasher Rack paint. It is like coating the wires with rubber. This doesn't need replaced or covered up. I hope this helps someone. Blessings.

My stepmother had a cat just like that. First showed up as a tiny starving kitten, so they called her Little Bit. After a while when she grew into her full adult size plus a couple extra pounds of snuggle padding, they realized they made a mistake with her name. In other words: a boo-boo. So her name was quickly changed to Boo-Boo as a cat that size should never have to answer to Little Bit.
I am evidently impressed how effective everything is in Japan!

Two questions:
1. Do the cats 'speak' Japanese
2. Have they ever been to the US
Japan is a Rabies Free country so if Rachel and Jun wanted to take them to the US it would be soooo much work (and money) to bring them back to Japan. It's very unlikely that the cats will ever go to the US.
Also they will have to be in quatine (idk if I spell that right) for a couple of weeks for "testing" incase of rabies

Just a thought on construction - apply the carpet before you put the shelves up. Instead of using wire to secure the shelves, you could use zip ties (or cable ties). I had the same cage for my prairie dogs years ago, and had to replace the shelves as they were chewed through. I found the zip ties to be a much quicker, sturdier, and safer solution.
You cage looks a little wobbly, so you may want to turn some of the shelves on alternating levels. ie: the lowest shelf runs east-west, but the next one up runs north-south, etc. If it kinda looks like a spiral staircase - you're on the right track. It will give your cage more stability, and keep the kitties safe.
Also, have you thought about putting a hammock in for the cats to enjoy?
Hi ,kylenparis, do they hold as much weight? I just happen to have the same cage. The shelves kept falling down, so I took them all out but one, and secured that one. Only one of my kittys goes in she took over and claimed it. However, when I take the cage outside I would like to put the other trays in. Thanks:)
Zip ties might not hold the same weight, depending on the brand.
@@sewhappy2879 black zips can hold up to 120lbs or 66 kilos per tie. Standard zipties will be marked with the tensile strength on the bag, so you're safe.

see, I tried that, when I still had 2 cats. One was supoosed to gain weight, the other should lose it. Problem with the one, who was supposed to gain weight, he preferred to eat in intervalls, always just a bit. I sadly had to let him go a months ago. Only positive thing, the diet of the other one goes well now. Still would prefer having a fat cat and my old cat, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be.
