I use OBS studio (open-source streaming software) which functions as a monitor system that manages inputs/outputs that I want it to. I create a specific setup that gives these nice digital artifacts/defects- I can add a few inputs like audio, video capture, etc in OBS. For input here, I use my second monitor/display. I tell OBS to screen capture my second monitor, and take this as an input. I then direct OBS to display what it's monitoring onto my second display. Now my second display is technically looking at itself, a real-life equivalent of facing two mirrors toward eachother, or placing a mic by its' speaker and yelling. Instead of yelling as an input- the visual equivalent is using pixels. You can retrieve these pixels from anything that will display it, most effectively, video files. You remove the background from this video, or a certain color. Placing this modified image in this mirrored loop creates an infinite vacuum in places that are void (no background/removed color) which captures and recursively displays any pixel that enters it. Now add more layers like a huge amount of filters affecting colors, movement, and quality of the pixels on the screen, and you get some real wild business. It's a bit of a touchy process that is essentially a ton a of experimentation and trying different processes/approaches until you find something that's interesting to you.
