I know you said this isn’t how marching bands are (way too strict), but actually in historical black colleges, they are very much so like this. They take band very seriously.
Fun Fact: T.I. was actually supposed to be play Devin Miles but T.I. didn’t know how to play the drums so they decided to give it to Nick Cannon instead
@@mutantx2372 yes T.I. said it in a interview tbh Nick Cannon did the role a lot better and I also heard that they wanted Nick Cannon to be in the movie ATL as T.I role Rashad but he decided to do Roll Bounce instead cause they paid him more money for that movie T.I. did the role better with Rashad
@11:59 the fact they playing the jackson 5 and jason weaver played michael jackson in the jackson 5 movie is dope. And that michael jackson pick weaver out himself.
This is a fun fact about Weaver that doesn’t really have anything to do with Drumline, but I didn’t know he was the singing voice of young Simba in the 90s Lion King, but the acting voice was Johnathan Taylor Thomas
28:42 The reason the fight broke out… at least, the way i understood it, was that playing on someone else’s drums is hella disrespectful. So when layla mentioned the “hoodlum” that started the fight… he technically did by playing on someone else’s drum That’s why at the end of the movie, when the morris brown drumline plays on devons drums, you can see him tighting his grip on his sticks cuz it was getting to him And they were about to do it back but didnt and dropped the sticks ontop of their drums to be like “we are better than you… we wont stoop to your level”
I only knew half of this one I knew the guy didn't like Nick playing on his drum and Morris Brown doing it Nick tightinning up on his sticks never knew it's seen as disrespectful
@@kingtech7917 Morris Brown doing it to Nick was definitely disrespectful. They did to get to him the same way he got to the big boy. Trying to cause him to snap out and cause his band the win.
Fun fact: During the Classic performance at the end, I was in the stands during filming. It was filmed at the GA Dome in Atlanta and they invited all if not most of the high school marching bands in the area to attend. And yes, almost all the band members actually played their instruments/drums minus a few main actors in the film. Most of the band members throughout the film were either from local high school bands, alumni from college bands or current college band members.
Nick Cannon saying he don't got a bunch of kids running around didn't age well now that he got like 30 kids out there. Charles ain't got no love in this like he didn't get no love in Remember The Titans.
High school marching bands are alot different then College marching bands this is definitely an accurate representation of how strict they are at the college level
Man this movie takes me back when life was fun back in the day and I was just a baby in 2002 and born in 2001. This is an unforgettable feel good classic. You sound like you’re sick.
I actually got into my school Drumline because of this movie. I played the Snare like he did. I can confirm my program was just like this, down to the military tactics. They had us marching all night to get stuff right. My school still has some of our Drumline videos on UA-cam that we uploaded.
as a former 1st chair/section lead, yes i made my section believe we were the mood and soul of the band and demanded top tier sound quality coming out of those saxophones. But uhhh, i made sure there was balance and didnt abuse my authority, i didnt want to be hated 😅 We did run laps or do push ups tho for being late to practice or just being foolish.
The biggest thing that bothered me about this movie is that the guy that started the fight at the homecoming wasn’t arrested for what he did. Dude swung a lethal weapon at someone and we don’t hear about him being disciplined at all.
In elementary school in 4th grade I was in the band for a short time. I played the trumpet and I went to several band practices but eventually just quite because I didn't know how to read music and couldn't keep up. I regret not sticking with it.
Next to the marching band score, we also got music from: Jermaine Dupri Featuring Q The Kid * JC Chasez (Of N'SYNC) * Monica * Petey Pablo * Joe Featuring Jadakiss * Nivea * Trick Daddy Featuring Deuce Poppi, Tre+6, & Unda Presha * Alicia Keys * Nappy Roots * Raheem DeVaughn * Too $hort & Bun B (Of UGK) * Syleena Johnson * and Nick Cannon.
First and foremost I hope you feel better. It takes dedication to do something you might not physically feel like doing. Also drumline is probably one of my favorite movies from the early 2000's in my opinion, love don't cost a thing was cool, but I think this one is better.
I’m so glad you watched this one! I love this movie, especially growing up. It came out in 2002… I was 12 at the time (I’m 34 now.) My Mom took me and my friends to see it. We had a good time watching it. Anyway….. I enjoyed your reaction!! 🫶🏽🙌🏾
That was really awesome watching you respond to this. It was obvious that you have a connection to it with your marching band experience. It was really great. Thanks for an awesome reaction
I am loving this comment section with everyone reminiscing on being in marching band either in high school or in college. Or just being in band in general. We all know that the Brass section was the best section. Especially if you played the Trumpet. 😎
I was the orchestra version of Devon. I started playing bass in 6th grade and hid the fact that I couldn’t read music until almost high school. Knowing how to read music doesn’t suddenly make you able/unable to play, but it does make everything far easier
I LOVE this film,a great movie for me,such nostalgic for me also. Wish they'd make another modern film about life at a black college and a tv show too.
I played the trumpet in school band. Couldn’t read music either, luckily the guy sitting next to me was nice enough to write 1, 2 or 3 above the music note for whatever valves I was suppose to press at the time.
This will be a good reaction, when I was watching your reaction to the waterboy you mentioned you were in marching band I was hyped cause I too was in marching band and I’m hard of hearing, I got into marching band because of my older brother he too was in marching band we were both TUBAs 😎 and he showed me this film! Can’t wait for this reaction!
I was in the 6th grade when this film came out. So many people wanted to be a part of the marching bands because of Drumline. I remember going to the theater with my family and it was packed like this was a blockbuster film when it was actually just a small budget movie that contained lots of entertainment. Bravo to the memories this movie made. Then I had the chance to watch it on DVD when it was released. These days of my childhood are truly missed. MJ since you watched this, you need to also watch Antwone Fisher. Another great drama film that also came out during the same month as Drumline: December 2002. Antwone Fisher is more so emotionally driven because it is based on a true story.
Aye mj I was in marching band on the drumline too I joined because of this movie and it was damn near just like this cuz our director was from Southern University one of the best experiences of my life
I love this movie and your reaction! I was in Marching band Junior and Senior year of high school in Atlanta. We were corps style marching and I do wish we could have played modern songs. That being said it, was fun playing alto saxophone and traveling for competitions. We won 1 of the 3 competitions and got 2nd in the other ones vs professional competition bands. Great bonding experience marching with 280 people as a band! Our drumline would always win playing against others after football games!
One of my greatest memories as a kid was going to the Superdome in New Orleans to watch my brother's band at Southern University perform against Grambling State at the Bayou Classic. The football game and battle of the bands are legendary here!😁
I was in college marching band for five years and while I can't say I loved every single moment of it, it really was the most camaraderie I experienced in school. Lots of good memories there. Played alto sax, and got the name Pappy 'cuz after my second year I was the oldest one by two years (there was a big shift in the alto line that year, got a bunch of Freshmen in while the rest graduated and I was the only holdover).
Wow. Impressed. I played trumpet in band too. I only continued through 8th grade though. Our program went downhill after our really good band director and his wife (also a director) left for another school. I really feel this movie as well. Especially since college was probably the favorite time of my life.
That's why this channel is fun, you do the random movies you see almost no one react too. Some movies , like this one, i havent seen in years I never knew you were that short, then the pictures..... Would make for a hilarious picture standing next to me, being 6'4 😂
@MJ WITHOUT SPIDER-MAN The reason why I love the movie Drumline because when I was 2 years old I was playing the drums and following along with the movie Drumline, shout out to Nick Cannon salute!
MJ did you know thats the uniform for Southwest Dekalb High School. I believe some band members were in it. I went to SWD for my freshman year then moved to Gwinnett.

And I hated scales too 🤣🤣🤣 mostly cuz our director wanted the drummers to do scales on xylophone And yes it’s try series even someone plays on your drum, we take that as a huge sign of disrespect or bad juju

My high school was the Patriots, and in band we had the tri-corner hats and the little capri pants with high socks like we were going off to fight the British in 1776 or some shit. If one person messed up on the marching, with those white socks the whole thing looked messed up, so you had to be perfect. Last I saw they switched to a traditional marching band uniform, which is a bummer, cause we were unique.
Was never in marching band. But ik college is way diff than high school. They would deff do this type of 💩. Especially if it was other students running these positions. 🤣

I was thinking the same thing... it's nothing compared to high school band
@@sedrabrown1 Exactly! Completely different!
I was coming to say this exact comment... College band is totally different from HS, especially at an HBCU!!!
