Top Gun is a 1986 American action film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., and was inspired by an article titled "Top Guns", written by Ehud Yonay and published in California magazine three years earlier. The film stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, with Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt in supporting roles. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his radar intercept officer, Lieutenant (junior grade) Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards), are given the chance to train at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.
Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from film critics. Four weeks after release, the number of theaters showing it increased by 45 percent. Despite its initial mixed critical reaction, the film was a huge commercial hit, grossing $357 million globally against a production budget of $15 million. Top Gun was the highest grossing domestic film of 1986. The film maintained its popularity over the years and earned an IMAX 3D re-release in 2013. Additionally, the soundtrack to the film has since become one of the most popular movie soundtracks to date, reaching 9× Platinum certification. The film won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for "Take My Breath Away" performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A sequel, titled Top Gun: Maverick, released 36 years later on May 27, 2022 and surpassed the original film both critically and commercially.

In my opinion, if the Cruiser isn't in the cockpit, I m not sure I would even go see it. I have no problem with the other actors, but, the Cruiser is always the under dog. He is forever having to prove himself. The thing I love about Maverick most, is that no matter how much he is down, he always gets the job done.
Yes, what Hollywood and the media "don't get", is TGII was successful primarily because of the decades of void between the movies - nostalgia was the primary motivation. The awesome arial shots, and weak storyline, wasn't what made the film succeed. Similarly, as they strive to recreate Rocky without Rocky, or why Casino Royale was so successful, but the Bond ownership didn't acknowledge that they realistically revamped the movie series to compete against Jason Bourne and Mission Impossible, yet lost the very essence of who the unique Bond character was. Now Road House without respect to the characters. Granted a "battle against the machines" that is based 90% in reality, could allow a great 'Top Gun III' film, as well as anything that would address how a government (Whitehouse) must be in tune with actual modern interdependent global economy.
Mavericks had three ejections within his career, that would mostly likely restrict from flying aircraft with ejection seats.
Ejecting is actually incredibly hard on the body and does takes its toll. I seriously doubt especially at Mavericks age he’d be medically cleared to get back in a fighter jet.
perhaps they can make room for his cane in the cockpit....

Do not remove Tom Cruise from Top Gun 3 because he's the best actor that movie has. Removing him will be a huge mistake.
Even if Maverick is holding a crutch in the next movie, I'd still watch him fly a fighter jet.
I watched Top Gun Maverick 10 times, and it's still isn't enough.

@@smotnick Although the original Top Gun movie is still the best, but the second movie is very good too. The best scene was when Maverick had to dog fight against two SU-57. I kept watching that scene over and over again, because it is too good. In reality, it is nearly impossible for a forth gen fighter to go up against a fifth gen and win, especially when the SU-57 has 360 degree thrust vectoring and stealth capability over the F-14.

I think that for the franchise of TG3, the role of Maverick being used as a mentor is a good idea for up and coming missions for the newer pilots in not only rescuing Maverick also saving the other pilots to keep them alive as well. It's all hands on deck. That would be cool where rogue Ai pilots involved. That would be a smash it.
When they do start pre-production for Top Gun 3, the story must evolve as the US Naval Aviators now fly the F-35 Model B Mark 2 Lightning Joint Strike Fighter Aircraft; this means the cast that do return will need much training to get up to speed with this fighter aircraft. It’s much more technical than the F-18’s used in Top Gun:Maverick, it has better air superiority than the F-18’s; Tom Cruise flying this aircraft will make it iconic.
The story of Cain’s Drone’s going haywire is plausible and could easily be done ☑️
F-35C is the carrier model with foldable wings.

Tom Cruise has to be in the cockpit even if it is in a Merlin the wizard roll passing on knowledge and comes in to support a final mission, Tom Cruise has to succeed and survive his last mission to become a highly decorated ADMIRAL, Tom could then move to a roll similar to Iceman as an admiral supporting and taking care of his favorite pilots…

Maybe there could be a Top Gun movie from the past, WWI for instance, Maveric in dog fight with the Red Baron.
As with the real Navy people come and go. Gave them 23 years and it was the finger in the bowl of soup theory. Put your finger in the middle of a bowl of soup and it gets a warm fuzzy feeling. Pull it out and it was never missed. Make the movie with new cast.
Those of us old enough to remember Iron Eagle remember that fans were not happy that the sequel killed off the boy that saved his father in the first movie and instead focused on Louis Gossit Jr's character. Top gun WITHOUT Tom Cuise is a receipe for disaster. What worries me is Hollywood's DEI nonsense. So Maverick's next mission may be taking on a group of pilots that use different pronouns 😱 😢

Top Gun -Maverick is one of the rare ( if not only) sequel that is better than the original, and is in spite of the original being so good.
@SSSocials That’s debatable. For me, the original kicked some serious ass. TG Maverick was, “Meh” for me. It was just “ok”. I was really disappointed that they left out 30 years of history between the two movies. Like, how did Maverick end up where he started in 2? What happened to Charlie? Still though, original was the best in my book. I only hope that in 3, it doesn’t get “hooky” and unrealistic with their cinematics. Like in 2 when they commandeered that F-14 and the bullshit takeoff scene.
