- The day will eventually come when mankind's tenure on Earth comes to an end, and with nuclear threats and environmental dangers looming, the super-rich have begun creating elaborate contingency plans to safeguard their well-being.
One common thread through billionaires' doomsday survival plans is that they consider New Zealand among the best candidates for building a haven.
The reasons for choosing New Zealand appear to relate to its politics as well as its geography; it is sparsely populated while being politically stable. Its high terrain also makes it a suitable place to shelter from the consequences of climate change.
One prime example of these plans is Peter Thiel, the former managing director of PayPal and an early investor in Facebook, who sought planning permission to construct a sprawling ten-bedroom bunker compound in New Zealand.
Thiel purchased a 477-acre piece of land for this purpose in 2015, allegedly costing 13.5 million dollars. According to architectural plans designed by the same company responsible for designing the Japanese Olympic stadium, Thiel aims to equip his compound with a meditation space, a theater, a spa, and various other extravagant amenities.
A fellow tech entrepreneur and friend of Thiel's, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and a key player in the quest to develop a super powerful Artificial General Intelligence, has also expressed his intention to hunker down, speaking openly about how he preps for apocalyptic scenarios...

They are building doomsday bunkers in New Zealand as it’s one of the “safe zones”, along with Denver and others locations due to the the upcoming cataclysmic magnetic polar flip. A “polar excursion” has seen true magnetic north drift from Alberta Canada towards Siberia for well over a century - but the pace has quickened over the past few decades and a reversal could occur before 2050. This has occurred several times in earth’s past and resulted in great floods, massive tsunamis, formation of new continents with the loss of others and would be a mass extinction level event for our planet. The Achilles heal of the bunker is always the air supply. A determined and able threat can locate it and you’re then pretty much screwed.
That's true but if you put it somewhere inaccessible (like high up on a mountain, money is no object for these people) then you should have enough time to identify and deal with anyone approaching it before they have a chance to do anything to it. It's only "normal" people who don't have the funds for stuff like that who have to worry about it.

@@ethan7353 As for the Hawai bunkers, there are people (usually former DoD) with skills you can only imagine. Eventually if you're in a bunker, you're going to run out of supplies, have machinery that needs repair, a medical emergency, in general, unless you have a lot of primitive skills, technology will take you only so far. It's a temporary situation at best, maybe buy you a year.

The hard truth about climate change is that, no matter what new "green energy" comes about, climate change will not start going away until there is a serious reduction in the number of people in this world, and they know it. It seems they are already busy making arrangements for it.

Celebs are indeed crazy. Not a doomsday thing but: a professor of mine was previously an environmental worker, checking how safe places were. He was hired to check if a certain home was still up to date, looked normal to him but realized there was a underground shopping center where high end stores brought their items there for the day like an actual store set up from a mall. There, the person would walk down and shop like a "nornal" person.

So these rich people either didn't think it through, or they have multiple bunkers all over the world and only share knowledge about one of them, or they have their finger on the pulse and will know about the collapse earlier than others.

In a post apocalyptic world gold would be the most valuable metal in the world alongside ammunition. Humanity would end up rebuilding and economics is a necessity to keep order. I don't blame them for stockpiling gold because in a future where humanity is fractured it would be gold bringing everything back together
What I mean is, what would keep employees and such from revolting against the millionaires? even bodyguards, what would compell them to not just take over?
Unless they keep weapons and ammo or a reliable way to guarantee their own safety, I cannot see such a situation going well for them.
Also, what value does gold have inherently? I get it has applications, but without factories to manufacture circuits and such, what good is it really? just some arbitrary metal?
In such a situation, I'd imagine its going to be food and water what's going to be most valuable, until humanity recovers itself to a point where currency and economics are viable again.

I think if you have billions of dollars, first, you have too much money to functionally be able to use in a rational manner, so you'd be prone to spending huge sums of money on entirely frivolous projects; and second, you probably develop a significant level of paranoia, since there's always going to be *someone* who wants to take what they have, being that they have so damned much of it. When you take those two aspects of the super wealthy into consideration, it's not a wonder that they pretty much universally have a doomsday shelter of some sort. There isn't much point in reading into it.
Keep in mind, these are people who are driven around in cars with bulletproof glass by professional mercenaries. What can someone of realistic income infer from that, other than these people are paranoid?

Threw out time in recorded history the wealthiest and most powerful people have always had a "safe place" established. It is just now that the clock is so close to midnight, that it's becoming an likely eventuality. Also the thing with bunkers, you have to get to them for it to be any good.
