It's disappointing not to see the shortcomings of the em5 mkIII corrected: a more durable battery, a headphone jack, usb-c access, a reinforcement of the alloy especially for the use of a tripod, more custom modes, etc. It was expected that there is not much to OM1, but at least some improvement in the menus would have been a good thing.
Keeping the same menu probably is due to the use of true pic IX processor. But it's kind of wired that they didn't put true pic x in om5 to match with the om1..
@@blo5980 The menu system surely can't be hardwired into part of the processor... it's just software and is incredible simple - definitely doesn't need a more powerful sensor to navigate a menu system and you would think some software engineering could bring the new menu to an old processor. Really a shame that they are not bringing a consistent menu system to the new line-up of camera.
You don't actually have the camera or have tried it. OM5 is excellent, so many features in a small body. OM5 users are really positive about the camera. Yes old menu but 'My Menu' now. Load your faves in there plus Custom function buttons. Video is different from EM1 M3, unlimited recording, S-Log for more detail. I had the OM1, super camera but I wanted something light for travel - OM5 fits perfectly. Really pleased with the image quality.
Oh Jimmy I love your energy and the positive way to see, but I’m disappointed with this Camera! No new sensor, no USB-C, no new EVF, no new menu… It makes for me no sense! I’m really hoping to see something new from the LUMIX line now, like a new GX10!
Thanks for the preview, Jimmy. As you're aware, I'm a professional photographer with more years experience than I like to admit. The one thing I DON'T want is a feature-packed camera. I want a basic tool where I make the decisions. That's why I own and use two OM-5 MkII cameras, rather than any of the OM-1 series. That said, I like the sound of this new OM-5 and look forward to your full review and appraisal. That's because, Jimmy, I trust and value your opinion. Rick
Sure, of course, that's fine and completely understandable. But you don't have to use features you don't want, right? Isn't there some value to a much higher resolution EVF, much larger battery, unlimited recording time, direct power, two SD card slots instead of one, improved IBIS, and a slightly improved sensor with a bit less noise and a bit more dynamic range?
@@loco240 certainly, I've no objections to quality improvements to the essential features of a stills camera. What I don't want is a camera that attempts to do the thinking for the photographer. That's because it will prevent many new photographers learning the essential skills of photography, resulting in them becoming overly reliant upon selection the correct camera settings, whereas if people learn those skills for themselves, we'll see far fewer questions about "what settings should I use?" and far more people actually learning those skills for themselves. As I often say to photography students. Switch off all the gizmos and practice taking the same image over-and-over until you get the best possible image of your chosen subject. It sounds repetitive and boring, but learning true mastery of skill means putting in the time. That's what people learn at Art School, not what buttons to press. Practice, practice, practice, until knowing what to do becomes instinctive. Why would I pay for gizmos that attempt to replicate the skills I've learnt to do even better, and which anyone can learn by practicing until it's second nature?
@@rickbear7249 Yeah, Rick I feel ya. After 40 years in photography there's plenty of nostalgia here. Let me tell you, the days of 12 shot film rolls, hand held light meters, Tri-X black and white film with grain like golf balls, and on and on, look pretty darn crappy in hindsight compared to what we have now. Give me the very best stills and video camera in the type and price range that I can use - doesn't matter who you are - better cameras take better pictures.
Thank you for the video. Incorporating micro USB and the old menu system do seem to me to be very odd choices. Would not using USB-C and incorporating the new menu system make the OM-5 much more attractive, particularly when used as a backup for an OM-1?
Love my original em5 mkiii and pen f. Not sure this new 5 is that special, I feel the em5 mkiii should have had firmware update on its focus long ago. If your new to micro four thirds it is a good camera, no need to upgrade body for existing users I feel.
I'm thinking of getting one plus ECG-5 grip to replace my E-M10 mk 1. I need to find out how much the AF is improved, other than that it seems to be a good camera for the price...
Upgrades to Mks are rarely over exciting to owners of the previous mark. It needs at least 2 upgrades to be worthwhile. If you're coming to the system new or from say an EM10 then the improvements could swing the balance. The reduction in weight is a bonus as you'd expect an upgrade to weigh more.
I Love My OM-5! I generally keep a 12-40mm 2.8 on it. It lives in a bag with My E-M1X on which I keep a 40-150 f4 pro. These two and a 60mm macro cover most all of my needs.
It seems they are using the same strategy as E-M5 III: put the core features of previous E-M1 (II) in it. So when it comes to OM-5, it is like a E-M1 III in a compact body. But E-M1 III is only a minor upgrade over E-M1 II, so this is the same when comparing OM-5 and E-M5 III. And the fact OM-5 and E-M5 III share the same body is even more disappointing to some like me who prefers the metallic feel of E-M5 II.
I was hoping the new OM1 sensor might have made it across. That would have made me get the credit card out. But I passed on the EM1iii so I'll probably pass on this one too. My EM1ii lives on to fight another day. But I do prefer the smaller body and would like the handheld HiRes mode and ND filters.
Switched to Fuji (XT4) right after the sale to Japan Industrial Partners was announced. It was the right choice. Bought the new XT5 yesterday. Micro 4/3 may not be dead, but it is dying. It's share of the camera market will continue to shrink until one day it will be gone completely. Sadly when that day comes, I don't think many people will even notice.
Bought the mark III Kit yesterday just because of Jimmy's picture on the box 🙈 Despite many other comments I think the approach of squeezing the EM1iii into this housing is quite smart. One think I want to know: Focus Stacking now with 15images? (The 5iii just supported 8)
Being physically the same and being exactly the same weight as the em5 mkiii, it makes me think that the new IP rating is due to increased testing rather than improved weather sealing. I have not heard any statement from OM System that the weather sealing has been upgraded.
Also changed from Canon DSLR to OM-5 with a 14-150mm lens. Can't get over the weight difference . Great travel camera. Just got a 25mm f1.8 and am looking forward to using it as a street photography unit.
Not sure if it's new audio gear or if it's scripted but liked Jimmy's casual delivery before. Great content as always, will check out the camera, I'm curious now.
Sadly, the legend is back, E-M1 Mark III revival. I wanted to buy a B-camera for my OM-1 primarily for weddings (my B camera is currently E-M1 Mark II). This, however, does not meet my needs (old menu, old sensor, old AF, viewfiender) - I cannot understand why they even released it. Who cares about IP53 or Starry Sky? 1% of people? This could be a beautiful camera, new OM menu should have been integrated to all new OM cameras, new sensor - maybe, AF could be somehow limited so it does not match the great OM 1 camera. But this feels really like a Olympus strategy back then :|
What befuddled me is that if all they could do is this, why would it take so long to release the OM-5 ? Because basically this is EM1 mark 3 techs in a smaller em5 mark iii body.😢
This wow me more than OM1. First camera from OMS! Straight to Santas delivery... wait!? I already had this three years ago... OMSolution - Because you don't need a _better_ camera. peace
The E-M5 III has been great, nothing really beats it price/feature/size wise. The OM-5 is a nice incremental improvement that's still reasonably priced. IMO OM is doing just fine.
yes, improoved wheather sealing, live ND, star AF and maybe hand held high res shot are fine but - no new sensor - no new menu system - no new USB interface - no new battery - no subject detection AF Have a look at Chris Nickels review ad dpreview!
This is essentially an E-M1 III in the inferior E-M5 III body - $600 cheaper than the recommended retail price for the E-M1 III (currently on $300 delta with the active discount).
No, there is no crop in 4K recording. But you need to use either MI-S2 (sensor stabilisation) or OFF completely to get full no crop. If you use MI-S1 (digital + sensor stabilisation), you will have a crop, but this is common to all digital stabilisation.
@@Yoko.Kurama No, it's either have it or not. You can't tweak the strength of stabilisation, in fact, I don't think any cameras/gimbal would have that option.
This release confuses me. It's the E-M5 III with a few enhancements, not the big leap there was from E-M5 I to II, then II to III. This has the same sensor, and the same 4K 30FPS (no 60 FPS?). I guess OM felt it needed to rush something into production to fill the gap left by the discontinuation of the E-M5 III. I just expected more of an upgrade for a "new release." But instead, this is like a re-release, or a re-master. If I were in the market for this, instead I would purchase a used E-M5 III and used all the money saved on a better lens or other accessories; the image quality would be identical.
I have an M10 mk 2 & M1 mk 1 and would love to move to the OM-5 but the poor CAF+tracking and plastic body means I'll keep my M10. I'm a pretty good buyer of m4:3 - 9-18mm F4, 12-40mm F2.8, 40-150mm F2.8, Lumix Leica 25mm F1.4, 45mm F1.8, 14-42 EZ pancake zoom, 40-150mm F4-5.6 kit telephoto & FL-36R flash...
The MK3 needed firmware upgrades. Not being able to remove battery icon on HDMI output for example unless in a certain movie mode. Removing 4k HDMI output and tethering. Have these been resolved? Can it be used via USB power?
Well slight upgrades are better than none. The biggest miss imo is not adding the USB-c port. This camera is clearly released for new costumers (there are not many changes to make the current customers upgrade) and the lack of a modern USB-C port will be a deal breaker for many potential buyers.
OM Systems missed the point of the 5 line. The OG Olympus OMD EM5 was a compact innovative power house and got better with every release. This OM 5 ( which I was very hopeful of its release ) instead is a re packaged OMD EM5 MK III ( with minor updates for the OG end users ). Still, a good little camera but not the one most of us OG supporters of Micro Four Thirds and users of the 5 line wanted.
Jimmy; I noted you comment on the magnesium alloy body with polycarbonate plastic as was the previous EM5 Mark III. Is there any change in the tripod mount area that might suggest magnesium alloy has been added there?
Hi Jimmy - can you please expand on the term "graded JPG images "Presumably you shoot in a camera profile and maybe tweak in L/R or something similar - just interested to know because I think your images are great.
Hi Jimmy, what lens did you use for pics at 10:09 and 10:10? Looks good. Also is there any stark difference between IQ between OM1 and OM5 - for standard portraits and general photography? Thank you.
Thanks for watching mate. Those shots should be done with 17mm 1.2 Pro. In terms of IQ, from base ISO to 1600, there’re no noticeable differences. Only higher ISO where you will see more uniformed noise pattern and less colour shifts, something that makes de-noising easier. However, it makes no difference if you use RAW de-noise softwares such as DxO PureRAW. The main difference comes when you shoot video, OM1 has better bitrates and more frame rate options, together with better noise performance in video at higher ISO also.
It´s interesting to learn the Trupic IX processor has the same computational power as two Trupic VIII processors, 6:45 on the video. Following that reasoning, there is no reason why the EM1 Mk III cannot have the same subject detection as the EM1X. It seems a software update would resolve this.
some websites says it has magnesium body while some said it is all plastic. I did not have a chance to hold this camera, so i hope someone can enlighten me. maybe need to buy it a leather case if it is made of plastic.
Much faster and definitely snappier even in normal use. The new enhanced face and eye detection works as EM-1iii means that great for portraits and photographing people.
Good to hear. I just checked the street price for the EM-1 III here in Germany and wonder if it is the better deal for the exact same price? I am curious to hear your conclusion.
Same body. Fine. Why not. Grip is bad but the buttons are excellent. However I feel the AF won't good enough yet for my street photography compared to my M1. Also old menus, why? and battery life still sucks for hiking camping multiple days. It's a pass for me. Waiting for a penF mark iii with a decent autofocus instead.
I love my EM5II. It's as good as Olympus got in terms of build quality (metal shell) and the overall package. The OM System branding is ugly and seems out of place. I really hoped the "wow" camera would have had advanced computational photography like a Brenizer stitch mode that gave you comparable DOF of full frame cameras. As the market is shrinking, I can't help but think this brand's days are numbered, and thats a real shame as I would have loved to see at least one full frame L mount Olympus camera.
So jealous mate. Wow. I need to get this. You can hear the passion and all the memories come flooding out of you when you talk about documenting your family growing up. The same is for me with em1 m3. Fantastic video mate
Just a note about the music segments of this video. The audio level on the music is so much lower than the audio level for your voice that I had to adjust my PC volume back and forth.
Rob; I saw your comment and had been hoping as you that you could use Auto-ISO in manual mode. As you may know when you set the camera to manual mode with Auto-ISO it records the video in Program (P) Mode using Auto-ISO. I recently discovered though that if you program the FN Lever to option three (Video Mode) the lever when pushed down puts the camera into video mode, and if you have Auto-ISO selected the video in captured in Aperture (A) Mode, not Program Mode. I am not sure why the method of placing the camera in video mode (button vs the FN Lever) results in a difference in the mode the video is made in. Thought I would pass this along in case it might help.
My E-M5 Mark III can use auto-iso in video mode. I set auto-iso setting in the menu to (ALL) and that allows auto-iso with continuous focus also in video. As I pan around my room the brightness of the screen is adjusted as I go into dark area and back to bright with no apparent issue.
Under the E menus there is a selection Auto-ISO that I set to ALL and not APS. I also have all firmware updates on my E-M5 MIII. When I record a video on the LCD screen it says the video is being recorded in Auto ISO. When I pan from lighted areas to darker areas the video gets brighter. By selecting ALL under the E menu for Auto-ISO even the Manual Mode videos show Auto-ISO on screen. Make sure you have all firmware updates.
I have the E-M5 Mk III but I don't think I'll be upgrading to the EM-5. I was hoping more of the "rumoured" features would come true. As it stands now, that only new feature that really excites me is the handheld long exposure, and maybe the handheld high res. Not enough to pay a more than 10% premium over what the E-M5 Mk III cost when new.
Old menus, The same poor BLS50 battery, they dumbed down the build quality from the EM-5 mark 2. Very disappointing from OM. This camera is 4 years too late. They completely missed the ball on this one. The OM-5 was an iconic camera and OM have shown it no respect with this release.
The E-M5 III was also criticized when it was released. I got two of them on my rides/walks, each with a different prime. Love the size and features, when/if they stop working I'll happily pick up an OM-5. Neither were revolutionary but they more than meet my needs.
OM5 isn't that bad in her price point. there has to be a difference huge enough between the flagship, med range and entry level. I believe that the OM5 uses a similar batter as EM5 series. I am not sure if the batteries are capable of quick charge. but i am sure the body of the camera might not be able to hold a larger battery which could take the kind of charging speed. that could be the reason for a new battery for OM1. the camera now can use voice control when connected to a phone. the is great especially one no longer need to risk safety to reach those difficult angle. since my newest MFT is pen-F I would not know if it was a new feature. the lack of headphone jack perhaps the downside of the camera for some content creator. yes, it would be great to have one. so that the creator knows the audio is working and not ending up making mute video.
Same old menus same old sensor (2016) very few upgrades. Is it just me or why are only the OMD ambassadors excited about this? (They have to) If I worked at OMD I’d fire the team behind this. This should be a forward thinking camera to show how OMD is invested in the brand. This should not have been the first camera with OMD on it. Shame
I like how you dodge the fact that this camera is a lazy rebranding and nothing new by merely talking about the EM5's place in general (>_>), Good one ...
This is not an objective review. It's just marketing at this point. Sure the camera is good but even reviews of much better camera systems cover the negatives as well.
I got my EM-5 MK III within month after its release. Unfortunately then Covid hit, but the camera allowed me to grow as a photographer over last year. Its really amazing that the body is physically identical - i can use all the equipment, including the grip. The only problem i had and still have is that the rubber part near thumb grip at the back peeled off, and all attempts to put it back (including official Olympus repair service) failed. My only question: With EM-5 Mk III i had a situation when i had to shoot photos in summer, at noon, clear sky, while I could not use exposure shorter than 1/250 and aperture darker than F5,6. So quite a lot of photos ended up overexposed, and since then I am considering a ND filter. Can LiveND feature fix this? Its because i prefer to use hydrophobic UV filters on the lenses and usually I dont have time to replace them.
This is a camera that appears to have been spec'd by the accountants and marketing team not engineers and photographers. USB-C and a non-plastic body at this price are a must. It might have been a worthy replacement for an OM10 - but a massive failure for the EM5 price point. It looks like the future of the micro four thirds format is now with the OM1. If its replacement is as poor as the OM5 in comparison to the EM5 mk3 it replaced then I'd say the format is as good as dead.
Hmmm….IP53 rated, 30 fps, red frame for video, light weight, upgraded eye AF, hand held Hi-Res if wanted, excellent colors, and 20mp? Sounds like a near perfect street camera for the Pacific Northwest.
Legend is back? So, I was hoping Charli or Zoha would be back on the channel :-) But wait, you are just talking about a camera model, much of which should have been better a firmware update for the E-M5III. The E-M5 and E-M5 II might have been awesome cameras, the mark III had also great potential if they had given it a firmware update (starry sky AF, custom modes to buttons, sweep panorama, save settings during updates, webcam support etc. - no new features for Olympus/OMDS). But the O-M5 with the features presented is a big disappointment in late 2022.
@@handel1111 I don’t get a penny. I wish. But I am a fan, am a pro OM shooter, I shoot everything with Olympus and M43 stuff. I am also an OM ambassador. But I don’t get paid. If you don’t know my background, you can Google me, you can see what I do for a living. I just make UA-cam vids for fun when I have time.
Thank you for your continuing efforts to inform and educate us about OM/Olympus cameras and lenses. I own a OMD EM 5 MIII and don't see enough new features in the new OM-5 to upgrade. If OM had made some morphological (structural) changes to the physical camera, like bigger buttons on the back, joy stick, better hand grip, etc, I might have considered getting the new camera. The other upgrades aren't enough for me to shell out a lot of money for the new camera.
It's not for me. I find the EM-5/OM-5 too small for my hands, which is why I went for the EM-1iii, even though the tech is more than I need. And the OM-5 is the same price as the current offer on the EM-1X (which is too big for my taste, and defeats the purpose of using Olympus). I also have an EM-10iii (also too small for comfort) and a Lumix GX80 that are my "pocket" stealth cameras. Looks like I'll still have to save up for the OM-1, or wait for the price to drop (I also want the Olympus badge for old times sake). Doesn't help that I just splashed out on the Leica 9mm f/1.7, which should arrive when they come back in stock. Fingers crossed.
A brand new release with a 7 year old sensor and old menu system and battery... Not to mention the poor Evf and no C port. Who does that in 2022 ? OM systems had a great chance to get this right and they've skimped on to many important specs. The independent reviews will be very underwhelmed.
Sorry, I really liked very much many of your videos, but calling this camera anything but a "hugely dissapointing upgrade" doesn't seem to me to be very realistic or truthful. You mentioned the commitment, well, if this is the kind of commitment we are to expect from the new owners, man I'm worried. I understand you are an embassador for the brand, but your followers expect a little more realistic reviews, at least I do.
Even I love your way of presenting new gear, the OM-5 feels - at least to me - like old technology in an old housing. Sad but true - there is no real "new" OM-5. EVF, Sensor and Processor are all already used components in other cameras. And yes - the OM-5 is an upgrade to the older E-M5 - but it is still a bit disappointing, that there is no new development in terms of picture quality. I'm not on fire this OM-5 won't find its way into my gear bag.
@@zanisgardening123- - I didn't expect a revolution but 6-year old EVF and Sensor is nothing I would a expect in a new camera of 2022. Sorry but lets face the truth: this is old technology whilst other companies invent really new products to the market at the same time. If you are satisfied - fine for you. I'm disappointed.
@@AndreasJoachimLins yer tbh the evf would have been nice to be updated … I’m not buying one myself I’m happy with my em13 I feel as if people are still better of buying a em1 mk3 at this price they can still be found discounted new stock
@@AndreasJoachimLins it’s definitely a re branding I feel re using old parts, like I said it’s a great camera but it’s not what people are hoping for, I could live with the old sensor if as you say the evf or usbc was added
I always preferred the evf of the 5.3 to the one in the EM-1 iii. Being faster and with more features I think it's a reasonable second camera. In fact I often took the 5.3 in preference to the 1 iii to reduce kit weight, my start doing it again.
So sad that OM Systems was so lazy with this camera when they actually made something great with the OM 1. E-M5 1 was my first ICL camera and made me fall in love with photography. I hate that the latest iteration in that family is so... meh. I know that the OM-5 is probably a fantastic little camera but I don't see any good reason someone who owns an E-M5 III should buy it.
It’s literally just a firmware update and name change what you’re paying for. They still use the same plastic body that is known to break at the tripod mount. I’m done with M43. Panasonic refuse to make a Lumix G9 successor, time to go all in on the Leica system. My Leica M10 will be joined by the Leica SL2-S in a few months time. Although I’ll keep my Lumix GX85 and 2 small primes. It was a good run but MFT is very much lagging very behind. And I’m young so might as well experience full frame sooner than later.
Jimmy, to be fair, this OM-5 did in fact receives some nice upgrades over the EM5 mark iii but this release basically said a lot about the current state of OM system. It is a relatively small player and has limited resources. I am sure they still have lots of EM5 mark iii bodies from Olympus that they do want to reuse to save money from designing a completely new body. The OM-1 tells us that they can still make flagship models with innovative features that can compete with the best cameras out there but they just don’t have enough resources to make multiple bodies with the latest techs. It is a shame really. If they only updated the usb port and the menu also, I would have at least given this release a pass but this and at a price that’s higher than the EM1 mark iii, I wouldn’t want to buy it.
Very disappointing review for a very disappointing camera. I like Jimmy’s review in general, but some credibility has been lost here. I guess if you are an OMDS ambassador you have to make lemonade out of (old) lemons, but this is a bit sad. I was seriously considering switching to m4/3, anxiously awaiting for the OM-5 but this “new” release and sad review really changed my mind.
Agreed. I get that you can't really harp on it too much as an ambassador, but this was some serious ass kissing from Jimmy. OMDS keeping Jimmy but dropping Robin leaves me doubting the credibility of the ambassadors OMDS chose to keep.
The OM-5 seems essentially to be a slightly updated EM5 mk III, there is no interest for me to upgrade. It will be difficult for OM-System to survive with such a non-innovative product!
no it wont - they have an OM-1 - and there are plenty of people who don't own an em5 III who want a new camera (not something used) this will be what they buy. the fact you don't want to upgrade to it - doesn't mean no-one will. for instance I have no interest in buying an A7RV from sony - doesn't mean it will be a failure for sony
I have left MFT for a Nikon D850 DSLR. Just got it yesterday. Sold all my Olympus gear except the Pen F. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the EM5 I bought in 2013.
Thanks for the video Jimmy. A nice camera, but I was really hoping for the new menu system from the OM-1 to be included on the OM-5... seems odd that this is not included as this isn't a "premium" feature/something that needs a more powerful processor for, and it would make a lot of sense to have a consistent menu system across OM System cameras moving forward. Lack of USB-C also seems a bit of an odd choice in 2022. I have been seriously considering a second camera body for travel/everyday shooting and to complement my EM-1 iii when I'm shooting wildlife (to avoid lens swapping for landscape shots). These missing (seemingly minor) features are a bit disappointing - didn't want to have to wait for Mk II!
I think Robin Wong has got it right with his opinion of this camera. What a disappointment, it's hardly an update to the 5 mark iii

Great to hear you are so busy with work again Jimmy and great to hear about the OM-5. Exciting times and M43 is definitely not dead :D
EM5 ii is the representative work of the 5 series, and it is still unrivaled even to this day.
Word!
I returned the EM5 III for an EM5 II as a backup camera for the OM1 III and couldn't be happier with it, especially at its price point.
Bought it. Love it. Paired with the m.zuiko 20mm f/1.4 pro.
Oh Jimmy I love your energy and the positive way to see, but I’m disappointed with this Camera! No new sensor, no USB-C, no new EVF, no new menu… It makes for me no sense! I’m really hoping to see something new from the LUMIX line now, like a new GX10!
Legend is back... Indeed. Same sensor, same ports, same menu. No money to let Sony build the om5 I guess
Thanks!

Exactly it’s a great camera for new mft shooters but even then I would get a em1mk3 new as they are around and often discounted
I'm thinking of getting one plus ECG-5 grip to replace my E-M10 mk 1. I need to find out how much the AF is improved, other than that it seems to be a good camera for the price...
If you are an EM5 mark 111 user like me - I do not think you will be tempted - Worth waiting for the OM-1 to appear at an affordable price perhaps.
How about an EM1 Mark iii?
@@davebellamy4867 I have had one since they were first released
Great camera not plastic
Upgrades to Mks are rarely over exciting to owners of the previous mark. It needs at least 2 upgrades to be worthwhile. If you're coming to the system new or from say an EM10 then the improvements could swing the balance. The reduction in weight is a bonus as you'd expect an upgrade to weigh more.
This is a more positive review than the last three I've seen! Then, you're a positive dude!
I got an EM5 mark iii this morning - ironically!
Of course a brand ambassador is only going to have good to say
Bit weird that they apparently using the old menues. Wouldn't even increase cost.
I Love My OM-5! I generally keep a 12-40mm 2.8 on it. It lives in a bag with My E-M1X on which I keep a 40-150 f4 pro. These two and a 60mm macro cover most all of my needs.
Thanks Jimmy, I love your content. Apart from the lack of a joystick, this looks like an ideal camera for me as a hobbyist.
I absolutely love the jpeg photographs you took with this camera
I was hoping the new OM1 sensor might have made it across. That would have made me get the credit card out. But I passed on the EM1iii so I'll probably pass on this one too. My EM1ii lives on to fight another day. But I do prefer the smaller body and would like the handheld HiRes mode and ND filters.
I am primarily a street photographer and really wish for a Pen F replacement. Sadly, OMDS have neglected us so I will probably switch to Fuji soon.
Bought the mark III Kit yesterday just because of Jimmy's picture on the box 🙈
Despite many other comments I think the approach of squeezing the EM1iii into this housing is quite smart.
Glad they kept the same GUI, I know how to use that from my M10 mk. 1. I don't want to have to re-learn...
Still love and cherish my EM1 Mkii. This one though would be a wonderful camera.
Good video.
Nit picking but I wish the rear panel had the same leatherette grain pattern as the front.
Soo... no new sensor? Or I've missed this part?
Same sensor and features as a em13 in a small body
This wow me more than OM1. First camera from OMS! Straight to Santas delivery... wait!? I already had this three years ago... OMSolution - Because you don't need a _better_ camera. peace
The E-M5 III has been great, nothing really beats it price/feature/size wise. The OM-5 is a nice incremental improvement that's still reasonably priced. IMO OM is doing just fine.
Glad you like it. I got one today.
yes, improoved wheather sealing, live ND, star AF and maybe hand held high res shot are fine but
- no new sensor
- no new menu system
- no new USB interface
- no new battery
- no subject detection AF
Have a look at Chris Nickels review ad dpreview!
This is essentially an E-M1 III in the inferior E-M5 III body - $600 cheaper than the recommended retail price for the E-M1 III (currently on $300 delta with the active discount).
when recording video in 4k does it crop in compared to 1080p?
No, there is no crop in 4K recording. But you need to use either MI-S2 (sensor stabilisation) or OFF completely to get full no crop. If you use MI-S1 (digital + sensor stabilisation), you will have a crop, but this is common to all digital stabilisation.
@@Red35Photography are there multiple levels of digital stabilization?
I appreciate your positive perspective but this camera is very disappointing as an OM fan. Not even updated menus on this thing? So weird.
This camera is clearly released for new costumers (there are not many changes to make the current customers upgrade) and the lack of a modern USB-C port will be a deal breaker for many potential buyers.
i need New menus
and USB-C
Thanks for the video 🙂. I m a em5iii user too. Love it
plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose….I’ll be keeping my em5 mk111….nice video as always…
is the menu the same as the original or like the OM-1?
As E-M1 III
Yes I do tweak the jpg after. However, adobe LR can read OM-5 raw
It's plastic top and bottom case, the internal frame is magnesium.
Given the minor feature improvement, do you think it's worth while upgrading from the old EM 5.3?
I think if you really want to improve your EM5.3 then you should get an OM1
Take my advice, stay with your OMD EM5 MK3
How does everyday AF performance when shooting family photos compare to older Olympus cameras? Say, earlier EM 5, EM 10 and Pen F? Thank you.
Much faster and definitely snappier even in normal use. The new enhanced face and eye detection works as EM-1iii means that great for portraits and photographing people.
@@Red35Photography Thank you. I think that would be great to cover in an indepth review of the OM-5.
@@matthiasbruns8570 Yes, that's what I am planning to do, I will compare that to older EM-5s and E-M1 III
Good to hear. I just checked the street price for the EM-1 III here in Germany and wonder if it is the better deal for the exact same price? I am curious to hear your conclusion.
Hi Jimmy, I think you might be wrong on the weight difference. It looks to be the same 414g when including the battery. Thanks for the video!
Yup, I think he got it wrong. The weight is exactly the same without the battery and sd card.
No Bluetooth remote support!
I have the M-5 MIII and hoping for USB-C PD and the OM-5 looks like a joke!
Same body. Fine.
Can the new camera work with image capture now? The old em5 iii they disabled it where as the mkii connected for remote capture !
Sigh, have to wait for OM 5 mark ii, with true pic X and the new sensor of OM 1 mark i
Price?
So jealous mate. Wow. I need to get this. You can hear the passion and all the memories come flooding out of you when you talk about documenting your family growing up. The same is for me with em1 m3. Fantastic video mate
Just a note about the music segments of this video. The audio level on the music is so much lower than the audio level for your voice that I had to adjust my PC volume back and forth.
Does it have Auto ISO in manual mode for videos?
@@Bakin thanks for the insight.
@@RadCameraMan Is there an email where I can send you a few pics of my LCD screen and camera settings that might?
I have the E-M5 Mk III but I don't think I'll be upgrading to the EM-5. I was hoping more of the "rumoured" features would come true. As it stands now, that only new feature that really excites me is the handheld long exposure, and maybe the handheld high res. Not enough to pay a more than 10% premium over what the E-M5 Mk III cost when new.
The OM-1 costs the same in the US as the E-M5 III cost at introduction.
Still interested to know the answer to my question.
Everything I wanted from the OM10. But since it’s here, it won’t come to the ten. At least the price isn’t as high a rumoured!
Tbh seeing the release OM5 just makes me wanna switch to LUMIX
For the price of this camera the g9 is more attractive
Old menus, The same poor BLS50 battery, they dumbed down the build quality from the EM-5 mark 2. Very disappointing from OM. This camera is 4 years too late.
They completely missed the ball on this one. The OM-5 was an iconic camera and OM have shown it no respect with this release.
I feel for the ambassador's promoting this. Still a great system to use but can't see this model selling well.
The E-M5 III was also criticized when it was released. I got two of them on my rides/walks, each with a different prime. Love the size and features, when/if they stop working I'll happily pick up an OM-5. Neither were revolutionary but they more than meet my needs.
The om1 will be there bread winner this will do ok but won’t increase sales this is more of them re branding the line up I think 😊
Does this have the my menu feature from the e-m1 iii and allow for auto iso in manual movie mode
Jimmy, Wtf?
I still have my E-m5iii box, and you aren't on there.
Could you cut your box side off and send it to me?
So disappointed. After the OM-1, this camera was the most anticipated. But this model simply doesn't deliver the goods. Sorry...
My only question:
With EM-5 Mk III i had a situation when i had to shoot photos in summer, at noon, clear sky, while I could not use exposure shorter than 1/250 and aperture darker than F5,6.
Micro USB? Olympus is laughing at us.
The vertical video is a game changer ! 😂😂 #theirony
Mmm still lack in low light
Seriously how can this om 5 bring a smile to your face?
Why not?
because he is being paid to endorse a recycled camera

Thank you for your continuing efforts to inform and educate us about OM/Olympus cameras and lenses. I own a OMD EM 5 MIII and don't see enough new features in the new OM-5 to upgrade. If OM had made some morphological (structural) changes to the physical camera, like bigger buttons on the back, joy stick, better hand grip, etc, I might have considered getting the new camera. The other upgrades aren't enough for me to shell out a lot of money for the new camera.
Feel sorry for you Jimmy, being an OMDS ambassador upon the release of OM5 is like selling rotten apples as fresh fruits
OM5 = EM1 mark iii in EM5 body.
However, 2nd hand EM1 mark iii are cheaper than this new OM5
Don’t care what they call it. Just “OMS” would work too.
A brand new release with a 7 year old sensor and old menu system and battery... Not to mention the poor Evf and no C port.
Who does that in 2022 ? OM systems had a great chance to get this right and they've skimped on to many important specs.
The independent reviews will be very underwhelmed.
Amateur Photographer review gave it 5 stars and a Highly Recommended status…
Sorry, I really liked very much many of your videos, but calling this camera anything but a "hugely dissapointing upgrade" doesn't seem to me to be very realistic or truthful. You mentioned the commitment, well, if this is the kind of commitment we are to expect from the new owners, man I'm worried. I understand you are an embassador for the brand, but your followers expect a little more realistic reviews, at least I do.
Nice one Jimmy. Get warm and back to 100%
Cheers Mark! Speak soon sir
It’s bassicly a em1mk3 which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s not a revolution.
How do you know OM1 was designed by OM and still not by OLYMPUS???
OM Systems could have at least added USB-C....Come on....
THE OM SYSTEM Logo on the camera is so turning off
