I'm very pleased with the added functionality of my new OM-1, which has not locked up on me yet (although, to be fair, it hasn't been to Costa Rica yet). Its weight is not trivial and I am still taking a first-generation 16MP OM-D EM-5 on travels and hikes where photography isn't the main purpose. But the lure of focus stacking and hand-held high-res are hard to resist.

Great little camera for people that don't already have a 5.3. Just be gentle on the tripod mount and don't use a PD belt clip or you can fatigue the tripod mount on a 5.3, not clear yet how much reinforcement OMDS added to the tripod mount area on the OM-5. I hope it was substantial. If so, all good, if not, be careful.

I plan to buy an OM-5 when it reaches our shores....although it has been panned by a few reviewers, including my fellow Malaysian, Robin Wong, who has an excellent vlog. I recently had the use of a friend's EM-5 Mk3 for an extended period and found it a joy to use for the same reasons you highlighted in this video.

Presumably you haven't already got an EM5 Mk III, so getting the new OM-5 is a good idea. I already have an EM5 Mk III, so I won't be doing the same. Too little has changed to warrant an upgrade.

Great video showing how compact MFT cameras are, and how much you can do on-board with an OMDS camera. I’m getting back into photography after a good few years out, so am trialling a new system, and I was blown away by how compact and light the OM-1 with the 12-40 f2.8 PRO (1.014kg) was compared to an A7iv with 24-70 f2.8 GM (1.651kg). Yes, there are pros and cons of each system, but when it comes to having to cart it about, OM-D (and I guess Panasonic) really steal the show.

I have the OM1. I would have considered the OM5 as a second body if it had the new menu system, which is so much better than the old one carried into the OM5. The newer sensor would have been better too. Shame, because an OM5/12-45 f4 combo has a lot going for it as a lightweight alternative.

OM systems ambassadors really trying hard on this one... But we can all see its a leftover camera with a new processor.
Selling this camera to the existing customer base isn't going to pay the bills, and the mid-range offers from other systems are far superior.
Sure there are some nice upgrades but unfortunately there are many downgrades.

Think about if OM could produce a 100-400/5,6-8, like the canon RF lens (below 700 grams)!!!! That lens has got way better IS than the Olympus 100-400 and is sharper and has even better Macro abillities! That would be a real game changer. It would be perfect to pair with a light camera and some other light lenses for backpacking, Today Canons ligthweight setup is even lighter than OM system´s. (Even if you choose Canon R7 as your camerabody with it´s relative low price and magnificent subject tracking that outperforms the subject tracking of the OM-1).
The big advantage for for the Om setup (with a 100-400 wildlife lens) is of course the weather resistance. But sometimes you want a light set up that you could (if you need) protect with a cheap rain cover.

Pan Leica do a 50-200 but it does not allow features such as procapture to work on Olympus bodies.

I think you could save money buying the Olympus em5iii or even em5ii, both still available. There is no improvement in sensor or processor. The Om5 looks like a barely disguised remake of that Olympus model. I have the em5ii and I am happy to have it as my backup now that I have the OM-1 as one of my main cameras. I like to do mostly birds and wildlife but the old Olympus is still good for scenery. Still prefer my full frame DSLRs but as I get older the smaller lighter systems are very appealing when I can’t work from the car! Enjoy your videos and your images very much. 😄

@@EspenHelland Espen, the E-M1III is irrelevantly bigger than the OM-5. No matter what bag/carry system you put it into, both cameras will take up the same space in your bag. And you get an actual magnesium solid body with the E-M1III - plus a lot of other stuff the OM-5 does not have.

The fact it uses the same battery as the EM10 was a relief and I have 3 of them and use a separate charger. Not a lot of money in making cameras nowadays and probably they have to skimp somewhat. It is always surprising how something that works for ages becomes a problem. My EM10 II does not even use micro USB but the proprietary Olympus connector. It is a wonder how us people using these cameras can cope with such hardships and trauma! Swapping batteries out and charging them externally is anyhow just a lot more convenient. I do worry about heat in such a small bodies charging internally with the battery enclosed especially using USB C.

Nice vid. The camera still sadly made out of plastic supporting an old sensor with a few extra features, its basically a dud. That said although not a leap as such it is still quite capable. The plastic body is a deal breaker for me. I still use the 16MP EM5 mk2 and it feels great cause its metal and you know the picture quality is still actually quite good. It was never really ever about the pixel count its about capturing the shot. But for my higher end detailed landscape shots I can use the pixel shift on my EM1 mk2. No starey night focus, but you know I dont spend a lot of time out country in the dark, I do it occasionally but not really my genre.

There is nothing "wrong" with the OM-5 but as an owner of an OMD-EM-5iii, this is a yawner. It is obvious to anyone who pays attention that the OM-5 is nothing more than what would have been the OMD-EM-5iv had Olympus maintained the line. Zero features that were not already in the EM-1iii or EM-5iii. And the fact that they are using the same 6-year old tired sensor makes this camera very uncompetitive. While it's fine as a back-up, anyone who is serious about shooting wildlife or moving people should not make this their primary piece of hardware. In terms of weight, the OM-1 is only 3 ounces heavier than the OM-5 and offers a newer (albeit still only 20 mp) sensor and a host of new features.
The biggest concern I have about the OM-5 is the long term viability of OM Solutions. They have released one new piece of equipment (OM-1) that was good but far from the "wow" they promoted. And they released a minor update to an older camera. Meanwhile, the big boys of Nikon, Sony, Canon, and Fuji are innovating all over the place. If this company can't or won't keep up it's hard to see how they stay in business. And if they fail, those of us invested in the ecosystem will have difficult and expensive choices to make.

I was sad for two major reasons, it isn't a revamped Pen-F with weather sealing and EM1.3 internals, and it didn't get the OM1 menu system that for many people took OM/Olympus from one of worst menu systems prior to possibly the best in the industry with the revamped OM1 software. That said, I'm still probably going to get one for the highres features alone. Until now I've been using an EM5.2 with highres to do photo-scans of film. I tried the EM1.3 version for a bit and the improvement of that alone is enough for me. My two main cameras are a GX85 and GX8, which I love, but I've pretty much given up on Panasonic releasing a proper update to the GX8 (a weather sealed tank in the rangefinder formfactor over the G9 and GH5/6's SLR style).
Really it comes down to getting a used EM1.3 for ~750-800 USD and using the money saved to buy a solid used 12-40 f/2.8 to go with it or spending the extra money on the smaller body. On one hand I could save the money and just use the GX85 as my lightweight body, on the other hand I could just spend a bit more and have basically a single body instead of swapping between the GX85 and GX8/EM1.3. It's hard to justify the extra cost when the EM1.3 is a tank and a great condition used one can be found for 400 USD less for the body from reputable sellers :|. One could argue the weight or unlimited video, but for my uses neither are a big enough factor to matter.
The 3 years of warranty going on right now might be enough added to having a single body, though.

The camera features are great, except you cannot use the ND filters mode for videos, its only for stills. Of course the main issue with OM-5 is the fact that it looks and feels really cheaply made. If you held the E-M1 II or E-M5 III or E-M10 III and then hold the OM-5 you'll see what I'm talking about. the OM-5 looks and feels like a $300-500 camera, however it is packed with many great features.

Thank you for this! I'm wanting to upgrade my old EM1 mkii - mostly for macro. I'm thinking the EM-5 may be a good option - OM-1 WAY out of budget range :-( P.S. What are you filming this video on? Lovely colours!

    M1 or my older OM5?

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  Рік тому +1

I find the auto focus quick to react, and the tracking works very well on faces. Though it doesn’t have the ai detection like the om1 does. I wouldn’t expect that from this small camera though. Not sure how it compares to your old one, I haven’t tried it.

Great video with some really great photos! You make real sense for the OM-5. I got the OM-1 and love it. I traded in my E-M1X for it. I kept my E-M1 MkIII but haven't used it in the 6 months of owning the OM-1. I got the OM-5 on pre-order and will be trading in my E-M1 MkIII to help pay for it. The OM-5 being a smaller camera will be my camera when I am out on a non-photographic outing.

    • @weisserth
      @weisserth Рік тому

I don't get it. Why would you trade in your E-M1 III for the OM-5? Both cameras are identical. Same sensor, same processors, same features - yet the E-M1 III has the better body, sturdier and better grip, USB C over Micro-USB - with a tiny bit of extra weight and marginally bigger. Keep your E-M1 III, it's better and you already paid for it.

    • @davidblack2632
      @davidblack2632 Рік тому

@@weisserth For the last 7 months after getting the OM-1 I have not used my E-M1 MkIII. The OM-1 does everything the E-M1 MkIII does but better. I still continue to use my Pen F for family outings. Yes, the E-M1 MkIII is a better camera than the OM-5 but I will use the OM-5 on non-photography outings when the OM-1 is over kill.

Without having a joy stick on this camera do you use the D-pad to move the focus box around the screen? Can you resize the focus box?

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  Рік тому +1

I press left on the pad, then I can move the focus point or turn the dial to change the pattern/size. You could set it so that it would move by pressing any of the d-pad buttons.
I mostly tend to focus and recompose instead of moving the focus point around.

Espen, I appreciate that you're only doing what you're contractually obligated to do as a brand ambassador (fancy word for salesperson). The OM-5 is a product OM Systems wants to sell, we get that. And Olympus has a script for selling it that you need to stick to.
It's just that the OM-5 makes almost no sense at all with its value proposition for almost every potential buyer of a Micro Four Thirds camera. It's essentially a castrated E-M1III put into an irrelevantly smaller, inferior quality body. And it's not even that the OM-5 is considerably cheaper. The recommended retail price for the E-M1III is only USD100 more compared to the OM-5. Why would anyone buy the inferior OM-5?!
Here is a feature-by-feature comparison of the E-M1III to the OM-5 with data from Olympus/OM System:
    Same sensor.
    E-M1III: TruePic IX image processor
OM-5: Same TruePic IX image processor
E-M1III IBIS: 7 stops body only
OM-5 IBIS: 6.5 stops body only
Same outdated EVF, however E-M1III has closer eye diopter adjustment range
    Same rear display
    Same focus system
    Same metering system
    Same mechanical focal plane shutter
    E-M1III does Flickr Scan for stills 1/50.0 ~ 1/7634, OM-5 only 1/50.0 to 1/6944
E-M1III drive mode is better, sequential shooting up to 15fps in mechanical shutter, OM-5 only does 10fps
More annoyingly, OM-5 only does up to 30fps in ProCapture, E-M1III does 60fps.
Flash basically works the same on both, however the E-M1III supports many more Olympus branded flash models officially, also in wireless flash control.
    Same white balance features.
    Same bracketing and stacking system.
    Same HDR feature.
    Same keystone compensation feature.
    Same fisheye compensation feature.
Same Live ND feature, however OM-5 max shutter speed is 1/60s, E-M1III is 1/30s.
    E-M1III does 80MP tripod High-Res, OM5 only 50MP.
    Same Live Bulb mode.
    Same Live Compositie mode.
    Same Interval mode.
    Same aspect ratio crops.
    Same video specifications.
    Same sound recording specifications.
    Same WiFi feature.
More or less the same weather sealing, E-M1III is IP53, OM-5 is IPX1, both are specified for identical operating environments.
E-M1III has USB C, OM-5 Micro USB (WTF, OM System?!?!), E-M1III has better Input/Output ports, especially for audio.
E-M1III ships with a battery charger, the OM-5 does not (WTF, OM System?!)
    The menu system is identical.
The E-M1III features a magnesium solid body, the OM-5 does not. The grip on the E-M1III is better as well.
    --
Clearly, the E-M1III is a considerably better camera at an almost identical price. Buy the E-M1III for as long as OM System has stock - once stock runs out, you can get it used in excellent condition with warranty from retailers such as MPB or KEH. The OM-5 is a bit of a scam in my opinion - at the very least it's a poor value proposition and a bit dishonest as describing it having "new" features.

The OM-5 is an E-M1 III in the inferior body of the E-M5 III with a $600 discount on the recommended retail price of the E-M1 III - or currently $300 based on the current rebate on the E--M1 III.
It's just repackaging an existing model at a cheaper price point. As I have the E-M1 III I can say this is a smart move by OM Digital Solutions.
    Nice tele-shopping/advertising video, Espen.

Terrible value for money …offers hardly anything better than the em5 mark iii …and this is now discounted to half the price of the OM 5. It’s a worrying release by OM Systems. If this is all they can manage then I fear for the future of the system…OM1 user and also a Canon user.

Hi Espen, hello to you both, Janet asked me the other day if I had seen any of your work lately and I was looking at this year's calendar again.
I noticed the introduction of this new camera the other day and wondered how useful if would be, now I do think that the size and weight advantages of this system overshadow the now really minor image quality benefits of the Fujifilm system that I do have and almost wish I had taken the plunge myself!. I have sort of forgotten about the weight factor because I have not been out much myself this year!, life take many twists and turns and my enthusiasm for photography has rather subsided!, perhaps I am getting too old and too lazy!.
I am very glad that you are so keen and competent, while you do come across as an OM fanboy in your case I am sure it is due to the real good impressions the gear is making.
    Cheers, Richard.

Hi Richard, good to hear from you, hope both you and Janet are well. Sorry to hear the passion for photography has gone away a bit, that used to happen to me as well, it used to go in waves until I started taking it very serious 🙂 it’s good to mix it up sometimes, find different subjects and genres. We’re good, on a trip to Norway just now and will be going out for photography a few times this week so I’m hopeful it’ll be good. Say hi to Janet, hope you both have a nice winter 🙂
