Mr Wasser has a tough job. A lot of pressure from Guerlain fans, the history, regulations and his LVMH bosses. Lovely interview, thank you for capturing, editing and sharing it with us.

Guerlain and Chanel are the only mainstream perfumers I still buy from. (Otherwise it is vintage or artisinal for me!). Thierry has performed miracles within the IFRA rules and greed of LVMH, I so wish to see what he would do with high formula budgets, freedom from excessive regulations, and time!

My fave part of this video is right at the end when Persy acknowledges to Mr. Wasser that he looks healthy and well… there is only one Thierry Wasser, there may have been only one person like him to have been able to transition Guerlain away from the family and into the LVMH age with the care and sense of stewardship necessary for a successful evolution. This kind of talent and technical savvy coupled with Wasser’s sublime diplomacy to navigate regulators and corporatists… it takes a lifetime to master! To know the best nose in the biz is in such good health means we may get to have Thierry Wasser with us for a long time yet… and what an important thing it is to say it, to let Wasser know we’re all rooting for him.

The importance of art in human culture seems to be generally underestimated. The arts are widely treated as a luxury extra in society, but are not recognized as an essential element that contributes to the emotional and intellectual, and hence physiological, wellbeing of people. Why were our magnificent actors , singers, painters, perfumers etc..... not extensively shown and interviewed on national public media during the pandemic?. Would it not be the responsibility of a state to provide its population not only with food and medication for their health and well being? If we can have information on packs of tobacco about its potentially lethal (!) qualities, why is there no possibility for certain perfumes to have a warning about certain substances? How many people have died or become seriously ill because they wore perfume? In medication the side effects are tolerated because the benefit is greater than the possible damage.....to me the same is true for a perfume like Nahema. Would we not.buy a perfectly preserved vintage because IFRA has come out with new regulations? It might be me, but I don't tolerate being told that a rose absolute will harm me! And certainly not as long as our farmers are allowed to use glyphosate on our food!
The work of Jacques Guerlain deserves being declared “Heritage of Mankind“, just my humble opinion...

Late to this conversation but with regards to your point about health warnings on fragrances the main obstacle to this happening is the fragrance industry itself. They abhor the thought, lest it cast the slightest shadow of ‘danger’ over their product in the retail presentation (i.e. warnings on packaging) and potentially harm sales. This is why IFRA exists-it’s an industry lobby group that attempts to self-regulate in the interest of ‘getting out in front’ of inconvenient toxicological realities. If I understand you, you would prefer a packaging warning that still gave you the option of buying a fragrance rather than having the house decide to not make the fragrance available at all. I’m with you, but I don’t see this ever happening.

    Hello Monsieur Persolaise,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to ask you if you know the largest size the original 1979 Nahema extrait bottle came in. Was it 60 ml? I’m asking because people are selling 60 ml bottles as dummy factices for around $500, but then someone is selling one as actual perfume for almost $3000. I would love to have that much Nahema, but if it is, in fact, also a dummy factice, I’d be well advised to know. Thank you for your help!

Truth be told, I have been criticizing Guerlain a lot for their reformulations, but hearing Thierry Wassers clear and honest explanations made me think again. It is great actually that the house is putting so much effort in keeping these treasures in the best possible shape, even if they are somewhat compromised.

Nice fragrant blending! ;-) I wish Nahema extrait would not have been discontinued but I understand the constraints of IFRA regulations. Still a shame that such a beauty had to vanish into oblivion. I hope some scents like Attrape-Coeur/Guet Apens will come back! And I agree that Thierry Wasser does a great job by reviving old gems from the past!

Thank you for this interview! I am looking forward to the house of Guerlain relaunching the collections recently discontinued especially Les Parisianne's, Le Plus Beau Jour de Ma Vie and Les Elixirs Charnels. Guerlain is my top fragrance house! Thank you Mr. Wasser for your gorgeous, precious creations.

This has been so full of important information about the world of perfumery today. Monsieur Wasser's life is not easy and we all are so grateful that he dedicates so much strength and effort to this beautiful art form. What has touched me most is, and I have to say I LOVE, that his heart as an artist is not being compromised by legislation (even though he is forced to stick to these regulations) and he has been so generous as to share his personal view with us!

@@ccdoe2441 We eat, drink and breath carcinogens and allergens on a daily basis. In much higher amounts than in perfume. Deliberately and/or choicelessly.

A long time fan of Guerlain’s oldest classic perfumes, I am curious to understand why Nahema has changed again between the bee bottle and the new bottle? Really sad to have to hunt up older versions at a crazy price. Any chance more recent perfumes such as the Elixir Charnel collection could be brought back? Really don’t get your strategy anymore.
