I just started playing and I'm in love with marth, going to my first tournament tommorrow and I'm excited to get bodied, you make the best tutorial videos thank you so much
Dang that’s a lot... 1: Movement -full length dash dancing then short -foxtrots -full and short length wavedashes -Shield stops -wave lands 2: Frame perfect attacks -Dashing backward after my common approach options (Short hop fair, auto cancel neutral air, and running down tilt) -Using other attacks out of the common options -Running OR wavedash down tilt at the shortest distance -20XX Green standstill option (make sure there is no green) 3: Ariel movement -Aggressive and Retreating Fairs -Short hop double fairs (both directions) -Moving back and forward with all airiels -Jumping forward and backward to a point on the stage to land on -Instant ariels and falling ariels 4: Edge guarding -Bair to the ledge -Wavedash to ledge (fast fall) -Ledge stall -Let go of ledge, fast fall (if possible), bair, up b sweet spot -Run off, double jump fair -Ledge dash -Ledge hop, short fair -Ledge hop, wavedash down, U tilt OR FSmash
jfc, I should have looked at the comments before I typed out my own notes, lol. well here's mine I guess, take it pivot (short flick) running, wave dash down-tilt advancing, retreating fairs S-hop double fair other move-attack-combinations practice jumping, landing at specific point early+late(falling) bair to ledge wave dash to ledge + fast fall ledge stall let go -> jump+bair -> fast fall -> up B run off -> jump fair ledge dash ledge hop+short fair ledge hop -> wave dash down -> up-tilt (OR) F-smash j cancel grabs reverse up b up b outta shield all versions of dancing blade, as fast as possible fair/dair outta shield WD outta shielf -> up smash edge cancel aerials
This is an amazing start guide for Marth. Thank you for making it. I watched it 3 years ago when I first started and didn't know how spot on it was. I've finally gotten all these down lol. One thing, if you're up for it, would be to add pivot fsmash and pivot aerials as essential tech or at least extra curricular. I think given pivots importance in basically all of Marth's matchups now it would be cool to have it added. Just a thought. Thanks again for this and all your content.
I love how you are quickly going over many different facets of the game, great visualization of everything. These videos are so well made, so enjoyable, and such a big help. Kira, you're the man.
This is honestly the most useful thing I've watched in awhile, I've been struggling practicing with Marth so I expect this to help me greatly, thank you.
Dude thank you SO MUCH. I've been a huge Fire Emblem fan since before Melee, so obviously when melee came out I mained Roy. When I realized he sucked, I picked up Marth and have mained him ever since, but some of the fundamentals have been hard for me to dissect just from watching tournament vids. Thanks for breaking them down and showing how to work on them!
I just woke up but something I thought you could add is ledge cancelled aerials from ledge. Release from ledge throw out a nair or fair and slightly fall back ledge cancel and regrab ledge. Its a great way to push your opponent away from ledge while stilling being safe. M2K is great at this
Honestly, this is super helpful, I recently drowned in pools at my first tournament, I was playing Fox and overwhelmed myself with playing too fast. This showed what's good and why and really explained how to improve. Really loving these videos.
As a Marth main who just attended his first tournament and got 2-0 first match, I appreciate this video. I really need to work on some fundamentals and this seems like a good place to start. In the future I would like to see more advanced tech stuff you can do with Marth. Also if you could make a video on how to Ken combo or how to practice it that would be great. I have only manged to do it twice and I have SD the other 99% of the times I tried it in matches. Thanks, keep up the good work.
+TimmyTheNinja1000000 practicing combos on bots isn't good, as they don't DI (Unless you're using the 20XX hack pack, in which they do DI) but these combos take time. Try practicing it during friendlies with friends, as that should really help you out
I love these videos and am glad that you put in the time to making them. Also as a Falco main I am having trouble with laser pressure, heights, and basically knowing how to utilize my mass amount of options from the ledge.
This is such a great resource, thanks! I'm going to my first tournament in April and I'd be utterly lost on how to practice without the videos you've posted.
Hi kira ;D thanks for making these marths drills, i picked up marth because he seems the easiest to play with minimal techskill. As i mostly rely on getting into peoples heads and reads these drills actually help me build tech and fundamentals up. these videos are great and i watch all of them keep it up
+Aiica he has a lot of tech skill lol... maybe not as much as fox or falco but he has a lot of tech skill still. play falcon if you dont have a lot of tech skill
I grew up playing melee. Just as a casual kid of course. I picked up Ultimate about a year ago and have done pretty well with it, even hooking up with top Ultimate players in my area, it's great. I also love watching melee and my favorite smash player has been HBox for a while now. I find myself getting somewhat bored of Ultimate lately and have been thinking about really learning melee. I know this takes A LOT of time and dedication, so much it's intimidating, but at the same time it would probably be so worth it. Nice video man, I mained Marth when I was 10 playing melee lol so naturally I had no choice but to watch this.
I watched this once before I watched your “why I hate my favorite game” video and once after. I play marth (along with other characters) in melee and was glad to find this video. I started grinding and practicing movement options but now I wonder if I’m even having any fun or if I’m just giving myself another job on top of the one I already have. Another thing is how fast I lose skill even after not playing for just one day. Either way, I love your channel and I’ll definitely keep playing melee along with using your vids for help. Thanks.
It's Forward Throw - the whole thing against floaties is that you hit them before they touch the ground, which avoids a tech chase scenario. Marth can do a pivot Forward Smash after Up Throw, but it's on spacies, at about 60% - 70%.
Can we PLEASE get SOMETHING involving Ganon. I know he's low tier but he cast some interesting capabilities. After all, Bizarroflame has done well as Ganon mains go.
thanks so much for this! I'm a marth main been playing for about 2 years, and sometimes my basic movement is too sloppy in places since I don't practice it enough... I'll have to get back on the drills, and this is very useful for some inspiration ^_^
Just a thinf for marth players: nair will also a-cancel if its just the very first "swoosh" or swing of the sword. From this you can jab, just the first attack. Since both the first nair swing and the first jab swing have low knockback, it is a somewhat flashy way to start combos with some damage, it could chain into a short hop fair, short hop nair, dair, or f-smash. And some other stuff (i just stick with some of those mostly)
A couple of things I've started practicing are I guess shadow boxing is what it was called, where you list all the options your opponent can do and play as if those options come up, that way you're training your reflexes for that situation. Second is setting CPUs to attack and using movement to move around them as much as possible without taking damage.
I'm a Marth main and I look at cancelling Down Tilt a bit differently (this was before I knew that it could be cancelled by shield). I would look for the dust that flies behind Marth when he does the D-tilt. I learned that once that dust flies away that I can immediately do another option. Once you get used to the timing, you don't have to look for the dust anymore. That's the way I learned how to do it :)
Melee is how I got into Smash as a casual back in 2006, but now I am playing Melee again to learn the methods but I have trouble doing the Dancing Blade full way.
A very important skill was missing :/ Cactuar dashing, its super usefull for spacing downtilts in neutral and getting an extra movement option to mix in with wavedash/dashdancing to get the super slick movement
HURR DURR SAMUS IS A GIRL ZELDA IS A GIRL SHIEK IS A GIRL HAR HAR HAR There's no (widely accepted) genderless pronoun in English. Him is the default. Especially for ambiguous/androgynous. Just like Sir in the military. Get over it.
Maybe add an annotation to tell players that: On 20XX 4.05, you can turn on Color Overlay for IASA frames so you know exactly when you can act out of downtilt. This is also helpful for learning the SH Double Fair (or Fair/Up-air) timings. Another random note: You cannot Counter during the down-tilt IASA frames, you can however jump-cancel into counter.
this is amaaaziiiiiing thank you! i play smash for Wii U but it's too easy and it grew boring to me, i started playing melee with some friends and it's AWESOME so this helps me alot cause i want to Main Marth
+Hector Velazquez just keep playing and go to tournaments. You need to practice alot to git gud. So practice even if you really dont want to. Its hard but you feel good about yourself once you force yourself to do that, Because you know you are getting better and idk your happy that you are smoothing out your movement and stuff. If you dont start forcing yourself to practice when you dont want to then you will be on youtube or something hearing about training hard and stuff then you get this drive to do that, but from experience that drive dont last once you feel what its like to practice when you dont want to, but once you get into the habbit of training if you want to or not then you will see improvement faster than just playing when you want to and stuff. You also have to practice certain things. I used to just play against the CPU but just today i practiced movement because it was really bad and i really didnt want to, but i feel good that i did practice even though i didnt want to because i know it is good to do and my movement will get better. Fundamentals will be gained by just playing the game and practicing certain things, mostly stuff you have trouble with like movement for example. Just practice moving around, wavdashing, wavelanding, wavedashing and wavelanding shenanigans with platforms and stuff. Then do that with attacks and get Hax$ falcon movement on battlefield, but replace falcon with your character. Go to tournaments and train alot..
Thanks bro. Just hombrewed my Wii and I still have yet to unlock Marth. But I swear as soon as I do Im going to do everything in my power to become a amazing Marth player
Good summary and video examples. I already practice all this stuff other than empty pivots... I normally do my pivot grabs or even pivot nair in place. It's easier for me. Idk why xD
This video is satisfying for me because I practice basically all of this, and I was expecting there to be something really crucial or basic for Marths to practice that I'm not doing because I suck >_>.
I main Marth and sheik and I pocket captain falcon and falco, these have been really helpful and I have started trying to implement these into my play. Oh and please make a how to practice falco guide
I think it would be really cool if you guys did these kinds of videos for really low tiers. I'd actually be super interested to see how to play characters like Mewtwo at the top level, and what kind of strengths they have!
+EHPower27 The problem with your statement is that there isnt alot of REAL top level low tier play, minus armada with young link, you cant really see what the low tiers have potential in and alot of research is required for the smallest of videos for the low tiers, try your luck on smashboards to find out the kind of err... ''''strengths'''' the low tiers have.
Hey Kira, Im practicing with Luigi and Falco, but a video of how to recover with the Down B and how to edgeguard with Luigi would be nice. Thank you for every video you have posted so far, it´s been of such a help
I've been getting used to melee for about 2 months now. I can wavedash and still need some work just dashing, but after seeing this....I don't think I'll be tournament ready till the summer
Love these videos. A lot of the practice advice seems like common sense, but it's super helpful to have a routine to follow through with, rather than just randomly throwing around moves in 20XX. Random question, though: where do you find the smooth music? There was a song on one of your ICees videos that was really slick, but I couldn't find a name anywhere.
I am a nobody marth main but I am decent enough that I can give some more tips. Practice moving with your opponent while dash dancing. If you watch PPMD or any good marth they adjust space constantly. DO NOT dash dance in place unless you have a good reason to do so. Get a level 1 CPU and dash dance in and out of his jab and f smash range. if you make the cpu whiff well then ask a friend to walk around the stage. While he walks try and maintain the same distance away from him while dash dancing. This is what allows marth players to make his opponent whiff alot and what makes him look so graceful.
I just started playing and I'm in love with marth, going to my first tournament tommorrow and I'm excited to get bodied, you make the best tutorial videos thank you so much
How did you do?
@@lewando4287 We'll never know..

Alright time to practice marth for the next 5 hours. Thanks kira
+DareToShine Ayyyy love your videos
Dare to shine! What's up!
Will this work with pm too? 👀
Yea it does a little
I'm from the future. Don't forget to practice Marth for the next 5 hours!
Thanks alot. This'll come in handy as a reference guide!
Great! Would love some more falco tech, can't get enough. Some new puff would be nice.
That was not supposed to be a reply haha
Lol Alax hear nice to read you xd

You abused ur gf

As a new Melee player these videos are invaluable. They have really helped my game and made me more comfortable going to my locals.
Took a 3 year melee break I’m back thank god I saved this in my marth playlist lol
Im so use to " Hey guys you already know its me Kira ", that Conner throws me off. I love you Kira
I love how you are quickly going over many different facets of the game, great visualization of everything. These videos are so well made, so enjoyable, and such a big help. Kira, you're the man.
Okay.. I'm a noob lmao I'm just watching the movement part and I'm like.. wtf lol
yeah this game is complicated. u got this tho
Timm Y mmiT Are you still a noob?
Honestly dash dancing is really easy. Wavedashing takes a little time though
Timm Y mmiT Are you still a noob?
Yo I’m a noob, I started playing 2 months ago and I won my first unranked game a week ago
This is honestly the most useful thing I've watched in awhile, I've been struggling practicing with Marth so I expect this to help me greatly, thank you.
Also, another character I'm struggling with is Sheik, so that's my vote for the next video :)

+SonicWinDX i had the same issue maining pika, too much speed but no control of my moves whatsoever. fundamentals are called that for a reason C:
OoS options as Marth are so important to practice. WD OoS is crucial.
I really liked the extra credit part. I thought that was a cool aspect to put into your video. Keep up the good work!
20XX Hack Pack 4.05 has an option to show when you can act out of attacks "IASA Enabled".

Thanks for the guide, very helpful to see the inputs when you talk about the more advance stuff like ledge dashing.
AS a Marth fan myself, this really helps, as I have gotten worse the more I play this game.
Just started playing 3 months ago. That’s entirely been my experience lol
I multishine tutorial would be sweet, but these "how to practice" videos are really awesome, thanks for putting out awesome content!
I love these videos and am glad that you put in the time to making them. Also as a Falco main I am having trouble with laser pressure, heights, and basically knowing how to utilize my mass amount of options from the ledge.
This Video Is Very Useful . Just Picked Up Melee Again And Its Been A LONG Time Since I've Played . Now My Fingers Have To Get Used To The Tech
I've only been practicing for 4 months and I have most of the tech down. Near consistent.
DarkStar7564 same but Ben playing for 2 months

Please try to get AZ Tempo Axe for a Pikachu tutorial? I think having him on would be hype
Thanks guys. I've been requesting this since falcon drills. this will help me alot
Great work, Kira. Your channel just keeps getting better and better and I'm excited to watch you keep growing! Keep at it!
I grew up playing melee. Just as a casual kid of course. I picked up Ultimate about a year ago and have done pretty well with it, even hooking up with top Ultimate players in my area, it's great.

Nice video man, I mained Marth when I was 10 playing melee lol so naturally I had no choice but to watch this.
liking the marth tuitorials keep them coming! I need help on my double fairs. Loving the content btw.
I watched this once before I watched your “why I hate my favorite game” video and once after. I play marth (along with other characters) in melee and was glad to find this video. Also throw -> pivot f-smash on floaties.
which throw
It's Forward Throw - the whole thing against floaties is that you hit them before they touch the ground, which avoids a tech chase scenario. Marth can do a pivot Forward Smash after Up Throw, but it's on spacies, at about 60% - 70%.
and the one on spacies is specifically if they don't DI
Thanks so much Kira! Ever since i subbed to this channel i got significantly better at smash ^^
Hey Kira. This is a really good reference to keep me on track while practicing.
I'm going to give you a run for you money next time you're in CenCal!
I wanna see a Yoshi video. He's a really unique, quirky character and deserves a video tbh
YOOO THIS IS GUIDE IS BOMB ! THANK YOU KIRA AND KELLEN !
Can we PLEASE get SOMETHING involving Ganon. I know he's low tier but he cast some interesting capabilities. After all, Bizarroflame has done well as Ganon mains go.
+Elliot Corpany Yeah we talked to bizz smashers take forever lol
heh.
+SSBM Tutorials good to know
+SSBM Tutorials Will you also make a "are you a ganon main" video? Ganon is such a fun character to use D:
+Elliot Corpany i just came here to say that lol
thanks so much for this! I'm a marth main been playing for about 2 years, and sometimes my basic movement is too sloppy in places since I don't practice it enough... I'll have to get back on the drills, and this is very useful for some inspiration ^_^
Yoo great video. I'm loving this series. Next one should be for fox! Keep up the good work man.
keep up the good work guys it's giving the beginners starting from scratch and it Will help me convert my friends to melee
Thanks for the video! I just recently picked up Marth and I'm trying to get the hang of him. This was really helpful!
This was very much appreciated and needed for my future smash career
Your videos are the GOAT. Really hope for more of the practice vids
These videos always make me want to play more Smash, great as always!
Just a thinf for marth players: nair will also a-cancel if its just the very first "swoosh" or swing of the sword. From this you can jab, just the first attack. Brandon Benton im working on it
working on l-cancleing?
+Brandon “BEEB” Benton I can do it but i can't get my self to do it consistently I keep getting lazy
no lazyness, all train or no gain. or lazyness, less train, little gain to a certain skill.
I would love a "How to Practice Samus" vid.
I was just thinking the same thing!
Fight Leffen, he'll always lose

Omg kira is reading my comment right now! I like Marth and Falco. Thanks for making this video! I also enjoyed the Falco laser practice tutorial.
I would get the app and vote, but there's not going to be a Ganondorf video until at least 2017.
+Orbrun I've been in the works with many top players for quite awhile, Bizzarro Flame included, but smashers are busy and it just takes time
Yessssssss
+Orbrun
Same
Guess what just happened.
I love the content! this helps me so much as a Marth main! proves I'm heading in the right direction
In 20XX 4.0 you CAN in fact setup green flash for IASA frames, go into training codes>color overlays and boom there is one for IASA frames as well.
How to practice sheik she isnt necessarily hard, but a clear cut guide could help.
WAIT! WHAT DO I ALREADY KNOW?!?! WHO ARE YOU?!?!?
Melee is how I got into Smash as a casual back in 2006, but now I am playing Melee again to learn the methods but I have trouble doing the Dancing Blade full way.
I remember when this channel only had like 2k subs and now its 40k, nice progress, anyway How to practice pikachu video next!
Pikachu players deserve death
I love your tutorials! Keep up the great work! You're helping my marth a ton
Yo good stuff Kira !!! Keep it up - park
A very important skill was missing :/
Cactuar dashing, its super usefull for spacing downtilts in neutral and getting an extra movement option to mix in with wavedash/dashdancing to get the super slick movement
Hey thanks for this video, I am a Marth main (with peach, which you also did, so thanks for that video too).
Been waiting for this one thank you
I really like these how to practice videos! can you do a video on pikachu?
Agreed
+William Henning That's not a top tier.
Pikachu is my MAIN! PIKACHU HYPE! TITAN SLAYER! Please do a video Kira!
He's not going to because Kira hates bad characters.
+Orbrun ahem channel logo
Thanks for rooting for me during arcadian doubles Kira :3
I have been playing melee for about three weeks and your videos are very useful and helpful! I would love to see some more content on samus.
I was waiting for this, thank you!!!
How to practice Samus...

It must take years to be this good. In fact it took me years to realize u can actually be this kind of good at this game
+Michael Burns yep the gods of melee are still not perfect... most of them have been playing for over 10 years
Thanks for this video, as a marth main I really appreciate this!
this is really gonna help my game alot. i just need to focus on movement really bad. i can't wait to practice.
Thanks for the video! I just downloaded Slippi and I want to start off with Marth.

Thank you for this amazing vid. My marth will soon be unstoppable!
Hey man, love the series, would love to see 'How to practice Captain Falcon'. I'm sure people would love to get better and learn to play him.
+Freddie Baddeley It's already uploaded
+TheMugiShow Gameplays You basically down B to stall out their ledge invinciblity. edgeguarding is a huge beast but we'll get to it
Thanks! This video is super helpful cause I'm picking up Marth. Probably a tutorial on how to Ken combo?
I want to see the fox tutorial series further explored. More on his options and all of that.
In the newest version of 20XX you can give any state (including IASA frames) a color overlay.
+Michael Teper that is insane
+SSBM Tutorials Yup! Obviously super helpful
Great video Kira, definitely make Mario/ Doc videos that would be awesome!
Love these vids. Thanks for all the work you put into them. =)
I've been getting used to melee for about 2 months now. I can wavedash and still need some work just dashing, but after seeing this....I don't think I'll be tournament ready till the summer
How to practice pikachu! I wanna be axe-ellent at playing him
+SkaterLauro im pretty sure axe wrote a guide like a month ago
+RaMz Zeus He wrote a Fox Matchup Guide
I needed this back when I was still a marth main haha
Lmao "no last names for safety" then you post my full name what up with you Kira lmfao

You can enable IASA frames in 20XX, so you don't need to do the shield after d-tilt.
but can you enable fleenstones?
but can it todokete?
Sorry for the late subscribe! I thought i was already subscribed! Great Channel bro!
The only one thing missing that is crucial is : how to train upb wall tech bair. But it's kinda complicated to pratice this in melee.
