Still happening each summer. You can go and see the races in Friesland.
btw, Bert Haanstra is a toplevel Dutch cineast/documentary maker.

That was just amazing. I've seen those Dutch boats in marinas, but never saw one under sail. Just beautiful, and they're fast! Thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't want to get in the way of a fleet of 'em! Amazing to watch. Inevitably makes you wonder 'where are they now?' People and boats. Thank you for sharing.

BTW - if you pause at 12:03 you can read the banner in mirror image - it says "champions 1964", so not quite the late '60s.

I sorry Whe had an Tjalk from 18 meters we build it up, we put two mast on it, one from an old vissing boat, whe had not that much money, and yes then whe started sailing, my wife Carla and Me, with our small kids two whe had, well I had to learn everything my self, but slowly whe dit geth her as whe wanted her to be, it wash in 1968, it must be in our blood, it keeps coming back that feeling from wind and the rush of water around you, o yes nice to live, Jenne

Yes, they're really fast - also I wasn't sure, but it looks like in one of the scenes there is a guy putting a wood stick in the water while powering along - I've been in those Dutch lakes and know they are very shallow, mostly around 2m - I was wondering whether he was checking for depth while underway?

      Yes.

    • @richardengels2307

yes, they are. the boats have vry shallow draft, but the swords go a lot deeper. At speed, if the swords get stuck in the mud the boat may tip over. So the they check for depth to know whe nto turn or whether to reel in the sword.
