Hi Sarah & Keelan. I came across your adventures when searching for off grid hybrid caravans. I’m very impressed with the Urban Armorlite Hybrid and the customisations that you guys have done - not to mention all the great destinations that you have visited that we have book marked for future reference. Your set up ticks most of our boxes with perhaps some mods to the 12 volt/inverter/charging set up, larger water tanks, and from a comment, induction cook tops (external and internal). We currently have an 17’10” off grid single axle van with Cruisemaster air bag suspension (won’t mention the brand to avoid shame) that has a limited pay load (ie when moderately loaded for a short off grid trip we can’t put any water in the 2x 90 litre water tanks if we are to stay within the legal caravan weight (ATM 2800 kgs) and tow ball load of vehicle (350 kgs)) which is not very helpful! Living in Adelaide I called in to Great Southern RV today to start the ordering process but left disappointed. Must have lucked out with the person assisting as it was clear I knew more about the Armorlite Hybrid from watching your videos. Couple of questions: 1. Have you a name at Urban Caravans that you can refer me to that knows their stuff that I can talk to, starting with your specs/mods. I noted in one of your videos that you are looking to have some referral arrangements with Urban Caravans? 2. I was also wondering if you have done any ‘weigh ins” of your van and tow vehicle to check the ATM and tow ball loading - not to mention the axle loading of the van (GTM) and tow vehicle. I got a shock when I did the exercise recently on our current set up. The whole can of worms of ATM, tow ball loads, GVM and axle loadings is enough to do your head in! Happy to take the conversation off line on FB Messenger/WhatsApp and share my weigh in findings. Could make for an interesting and topical video in the future. Hi Keelan and Sarah, We have used a weight distribution hitch on our small off road van for years, this despite the van being way under our max ball weight and GTM. We have an off road hitch as well so a WDH does work with an off road hitch BUT what we do get is awesome safety, handling and braking. The vehicle is so much easier to drive, the van doesn't push the Prado around, it just feels planted on the road . It is so comfortable without the need for uprated springs, we run a 2 inch lift and standard rate springs. We get good tyre life and economy to boot. At night our headlights shine where they are supposed too. So many hybrids and and even big vans are not fitted with a WDH and I really don't know why. If we need max articulation on off road tracks, I take the bars off. When we don't have a van attached the Prado retains its supple suspension which is great for everyday driving and also off road work. We crossed the Simpson with the WDH three years ago and kept the bars on the whole time.
Hey Bree, sounds like you have the perfect setup for you!! Our van dosnt really push the Prado around at all, it’s very well weight distributed with a lighter ball weight than our old 11ft hybrid. We love towing it! Dosnt sway or carry on at all! The Do35 cruise master hitch is amazing and when braking hard it feels like the van actually pulls the car up, very smooth and a dream to tow! Thanks for the info though, not too sure what Prado you have but ours and most have projector headlights and you can adjust the lights up and down from inside the cab.

Great vid and walk around guys, enjoying your channel and adventures, ur really livin the dream aren’t ya’s. Luv ur van & would consider one myself if I was in the market, hmmm, maybe. Im a Solar & battery freak too, so appreciate the system u have elected, well done. Im leaning toward the larger prismatic 310ah LifePo4 cells nowdays, with 48v & 24v systems, 8 cells @ 12 or 24v would give you nearly 7.5Kw in a much smaller form factor that could be customised into a nice little (Smaller) section of ur battery area, than the 5Kw u have now, but u have heaps of juice and setup looks good. It is a very nice system u have, I am curious how well the aircon works, I prefer overhead type AC heads for cooling purposes as cool air will naturally fall, but with the side fans I imagine this would help with circulation. Handy tip about red lights, i do like to incorporate dimmers with LED lights regularly, you can use a brighter LED (Outside for instance as a flood light) and dim it from 50-100w down to 1 or 2 watts for power saving, mood &/or night lighting. While there are pro’s & cons of induction cookers, I do think you guy’s could benefit from a single plate unit to cook a bit of Barra, sausages n eggs whatever, a single element is fairly cheap n u got the power, + maybe a single gas burner outside as well would work and give redundancy. Beautiful van and fit out, made a lot of great decisions here & points for considerations. So many great features & looks to be a great Aussie build, if I do get a van, I would definitely be looking at what u guys have done here with the Urban, nice, TFS. @@SarahandKeelanTravels yes we are planning a lap of OZ but I have a question as we are also looking at the bigger urban tuff range semi off road van which is longer and looks a lot more comfortable with extra storage etc. just wondering how much real off road you are doing? What would you have missed out on if you had a semi off road? They are heavier and we would need a land cruiser but I'm only doing this once. The full off road is quite a trade off comfort wise and not much space for clothes etc. it's a long time in a small space

@@JosephPuplava the price of caravans have skyrocketed after covid restrictions MDC have a 12 foot hybrid XT12-HR and that compact unit costs $110 thousand soon to go to 114k (price increase) I think I'll hold on to my caravan till it falls to bits
Had you thought about fitting an indiction hob outside instead of gas that is affected by the wind? We use induction and with your solar/ battery capacity it would work perfectly.
@@mtscott true, but Im sure they have plenty of juice with the system they have to run a single element induction stove for the occasional use or more even, he has around 5Kw of battery without solar or dc-dc. Single induction element is only up to 2400W (yeah I know, a lot) but you dont use them to cook for a long time, so weather permitting or a bit of travel and the power is soon recovered. I think it could be a very viable option for many if used effectively/efficiently for a bit of fish or whatever & they are a small unit too, perhaps a single gas burner & a induction plate to cover both possibilities & redundancy.
Great little van. To maximise storage for clothes use packing cubes (from Daiso) and the felt drawer inserts from K-mart. Cheap as chips and you know what’s in each so you don’t have to pull things out to find them.
I just ordered my Urban. If all goes well we should have it in September, we are so exited about the product and very impressed how Steve got back into the business and thinking out the box. Loved your video, our first expedition is Uluru in December

Thanks for sharing your video, we have just ordered an Armorlite at the show in Brisbane and Bill and Sheree sugested we check you out. They are making us a shorter version with airbag suspension so it will fit in our garage when not in use, we having been looking for this sort of flexibility in a caravan manufacturer for quite sometime and it looks like we have struck lucky with Urban.

Hi guys - love the new hybrid - so much room and so light!!! Thanks for the advice you gave me on your last van - choosing the right van could be an expensive mistake if you don't do your homework. We have a 2019 Hilux and weight is a big factor for me - everyone i have spoken to has suggested to add a 2inch Lift for the car and then they say towing is far more easier and a tad more economical - so they say! Loved the review on this van - a lot of great features not only on the outside but the inside. Looking forward to see what kind of deal you can organise with this supplier. Now i have to back track and look at some of your earlier videos. Safe travels guys looking forward to your new videos as well.
Thanks mate we are very happy campers!! Light is key for us 4 cylinder owners!! I would recommend heavy duty constant load springs and a 2 inch lift to deal with the heavy ball weights hybrids have! Well done on doing your research! Some companies are very cheap and seem like the way to go but in reality they are cheap because the don’t invest in after sale support and warranty.. good luck 🤙🏽🍻🤙🏽
You mentioned to let you know if anyone is interested in getting this van and just wanted to let you know We Love this Van and saw this video just before we went looking at other Hybrid options yesterday. We could not find anything as good as this armorlite in relation to all the features and off road capabilities. The interior layout and kitchen in and out was not available in anything we have looked at in this size van so we are getting one simply because of your video. If we had not have seen this video we would not know about Urban. We just got a call from the Newcastle dealer letting us know we can get the series 3 version by October 2022 so we are super excited. We are also looking at upgrading the solar due to your explanation Keelan - thanks for this. Looking forward to more vids of your travels! By the way do you feel that you need an annexe for privacy and is the storage a bit tight?
Hey Ezra! That makes 2 of us then because we love Keith the Urban! Can’t agree more, it’s light, luxury and has twice as much clearance underneath than our old van easily! We find the space is fine for us, a lot more than other hybrids we have looked at! I recommend going with the Sarah keelan package! You can get the exact same van as us, solar, extra storage, the works!! But please email Bill at Urban your interest as he will be able to get you a better deal or something thrown in as you watch our channel! In terms with the annex I think that we didn’t use it on our old van much, we would need to be in a spot for 2-3 weeks before we felt the need to put it up! The awning that comes on the urban has the ability to slide a annex into it on the glide rail!
Great channel guys and I was waiting for this particular van tour. This pretty much ticks all of my boxes as far as a practical easy to tow van is concerned. I run a 94 model 80 series petrol Landcruiser that I love, but fuel economy is around 200 metres to the liter....... ok maybe not .....so a light weight van with all the fruit is a priority for me. I will definitely be checking out this particular van. Your channel and how you present it just gets better each episode and I look forward to watching fellow Sandgropers and their the channel grow. We have weighed the van and the car, the car fully loaded with the van on is 2900kg that’s fueled up, and the van is 2.45t loaded not sure about ball weight
I / We have the Kokoda version of exactly this van...also called the Armorlite. There is some minor variation in specs but basically everything you have we have, ours with Roof mounted A/C so under bed storage, but no inside kitchen. Use a butane stove if needed but otherwise all outside cooking. Not inexpensive but...Easy to tow with our Disco 4, no sway no stress.
Hey Tony, so urban actually sold the design to Kokoda many years ago, Kokoda Armorlite are the same design however wood frame and not tig welded ali frame. Great design lightweight like you said
@@SarahandKeelanTravels Hi Guys, Ours was built 2018 and it was sold as having the welded frame but haven't drilled any new holes to confirm :) Ours also has the air-bag lift for the roof which is just as well...it's a heavy lift with the A/C, Tv aerial, and solar up there.

Hi Sarah and Keelan, I just came across this video today and I just loved the fun and honest Aussie presentation by you both. I do like the van. Most Hybrids are too heavy for the Prado (I have a 2018 model) with small payloads and they aren't that comfortable inside. After watching this I've started watching your other videos and researching the Urban. The NSW dealer dosen't get a good review so I was wondering how you went about ordering yours seeing that you were in WA and did the handover at a roadhouse? I look forward to getting up to speed on all your videos.
Hey Gazza, Glad you found our channel mate and welcome! for sure I hear you.. that was the same issue we had! it was weight saving game and compromising for what we actually wanted in a van! this one was the only one on the market that allowed us to not compromise or have to upgrade towing rigs! mind you though, my Prado is 2011 and yours has the new and improved engine so you'll have no dramas towing the armorlite! Urban have dealers all over Australia apart from Tasmania and NT, Luxury RV is Perths dealer! Our setup with ordering was slightly different as We currently do Research and Development on Urban Caravans, We are ambassadors of the brand but also test the product and improve little bits and pieces to make the van even better. We had a time restraint before we started our big lap and that's why we shot to the border and grabbed the van! We reserve the right to be able to say whatever we think about the product and hence we just made a video on what's gone wrong with the van. We currently have an 17’10” off grid single axle van with Cruisemaster air bag suspension (won’t mention the brand to avoid shame) that has a limited pay load (ie when moderately loaded for a short off grid trip we can’t put any water in the 2x 90 litre water tanks if we are to stay within the legal caravan weight (ATM 2800 kgs) and tow ball load of vehicle (350 kgs)) which is not very helpful!
Living in Adelaide I called in to Great Southern RV today to start the ordering process but left disappointed. Must have lucked out with the person assisting as it was clear I knew more about the Armorlite Hybrid from watching your videos.
Couple of questions:
1. Have you a name at Urban Caravans that you can refer me to that knows their stuff that I can talk to, starting with your specs/mods. I noted in one of your videos that you are looking to have some referral arrangements with Urban Caravans?
2. I was also wondering if you have done any ‘weigh ins” of your van and tow vehicle to check the ATM and tow ball loading - not to mention the axle loading of the van (GTM) and tow vehicle. I got a shock when I did the exercise recently on our current set up.
The whole can of worms of ATM, tow ball loads, GVM and axle loadings is enough to do your head in!

We are yet to see/find anything else close on the market and we live full time on the road and are literally see every van on the market! Hi Keelan and Sarah,
We have used a weight distribution hitch on our small off road van for years, this despite the van being way under our max ball weight and GTM. We have an off road hitch as well so a WDH does work with an off road hitch BUT what we do get is awesome safety, handling and braking. The vehicle is so much easier to drive, the van doesn't push the Prado around, it just feels planted on the road . It is so comfortable without the need for uprated springs, we run a 2 inch lift and standard rate springs. We get good tyre life and economy to boot. At night our headlights shine where they are supposed too.
So many hybrids and and even big vans are not fitted with a WDH and I really don't know why. If we need max articulation on off road tracks, I take the bars off. When we don't have a van attached the Prado retains its supple suspension which is great for everyday driving and also off road work. We crossed the Simpson with the WDH three years ago and kept the bars on the whole time.
Hey Bree, sounds like you have the perfect setup for you!! Our van dosnt really push the Prado around at all, it’s very well weight distributed with a lighter ball weight than our old 11ft hybrid. We love towing it! Dosnt sway or carry on at all! The Do35 cruise master hitch is amazing and when braking hard it feels like the van actually pulls the car up, very smooth and a dream to tow! Thanks for the info though, not too sure what Prado you have but ours and most have projector headlights and you can adjust the lights up and down from inside the cab.

Luv ur van & would consider one myself if I was in the market, hmmm, maybe.
Im a Solar & battery freak too, so appreciate the system u have elected, well done. Im leaning toward the larger prismatic 310ah LifePo4 cells nowdays, with 48v & 24v systems, 8 cells @ 12 or 24v would give you nearly 7.5Kw in a much smaller form factor that could be customised into a nice little (Smaller) section of ur battery area, than the 5Kw u have now, but u have heaps of juice and setup looks good.
It is a very nice system u have, I am curious how well the aircon works, I prefer overhead type AC heads for cooling purposes as cool air will naturally fall, but with the side fans I imagine this would help with circulation.
Handy tip about red lights, i do like to incorporate dimmers with LED lights regularly, you can use a brighter LED (Outside for instance as a flood light) and dim it from 50-100w down to 1 or 2 watts for power saving, mood &/or night lighting. While there are pro’s & cons of induction cookers, I do think you guy’s could benefit from a single plate unit to cook a bit of Barra, sausages n eggs whatever, a single element is fairly cheap n u got the power, + maybe a single gas burner outside as well would work and give redundancy. Beautiful van and fit out, made a lot of great decisions here & points for considerations. So many great features & looks to be a great Aussie build, if I do get a van, I would definitely be looking at what u guys have done here with the Urban, nice, TFS. Enjoying ur Cape Trip vids @ the moment. Cheers

@@SarahandKeelanTravels yes we are planning a lap of OZ but I have a question as we are also looking at the bigger urban tuff range semi off road van which is longer and looks a lot more comfortable with extra storage etc. just wondering how much real off road you are doing? What would you have missed out on if you had a semi off road? They are heavier and we would need a land cruiser but I'm only doing this once. The full off road is quite a trade off comfort wise and not much space for clothes etc. it's a long time in a small space

@@JosephPuplava the price of caravans have skyrocketed after covid restrictions MDC have a 12 foot hybrid XT12-HR and that compact unit costs $110 thousand soon to go to 114k (price increase) I think I'll hold on to my caravan till it falls to bits

About 12 months
Had you thought about fitting an indiction hob outside instead of gas that is affected by the wind? We use induction and with your solar/ battery capacity it would work perfectly.
That is a very practice idea and no we didn’t think of that! I think now we wished we had only on windy days cooking fish!
Induction uses a LOT of power. Need to do the calls to see if you can power it.
@@mtscott true, but Im sure they have plenty of juice with the system they have to run a single element induction stove for the occasional use or more even, he has around 5Kw of battery without solar or dc-dc.
Single induction element is only up to 2400W (yeah I know, a lot) but you dont use them to cook for a long time, so weather permitting or a bit of travel and the power is soon recovered. I think it could be a very viable option for many if used effectively/efficiently for a bit of fish or whatever & they are a small unit too, perhaps a single gas burner & a induction plate to cover both possibilities & redundancy.

Great little van. To maximise storage for clothes use packing cubes (from Daiso) and the felt drawer inserts from K-mart. Cheap as chips and you know what’s in each so you don’t have to pull things out to find them.

They are making us a shorter version with airbag suspension so it will fit in our garage when not in use, we having been looking for this sort of flexibility in a caravan manufacturer for quite sometime and it looks like we have struck lucky with Urban.

Hi guys - love the new hybrid - so much room and so light!!! Thanks for the advice you gave me on your last van - choosing the right van could be an expensive mistake if you don't do your homework. We have a 2019 Hilux and weight is a big factor for me - everyone i have spoken to has suggested to add a 2inch Lift for the car and then they say towing is far more easier and a tad more economical - so they say! Loved the review on this van - a lot of great features not only on the outside but the inside. Looking forward to see what kind of deal you can organise with this supplier. Now i have to back track and look at some of your earlier videos. Safe travels guys looking forward to your new videos as well.
Thanks mate we are very happy campers!! Light is key for us 4 cylinder owners!! I would recommend heavy duty constant load springs and a 2 inch lift to deal with the heavy ball weights hybrids have!

You mentioned to let you know if anyone is interested in getting this van and just wanted to let you know We Love this Van and saw this video just before we went looking at other Hybrid options yesterday. We could not find anything as good as this armorlite in relation to all the features and off road capabilities. The interior layout and kitchen in and out was not available in anything we have looked at in this size van so we are getting one simply because of your video. If we had not have seen this video we would not know about Urban. We just got a call from the Newcastle dealer letting us know we can get the series 3 version by October 2022 so we are super excited. We are also looking at upgrading the solar due to your explanation Keelan - thanks for this. Looking forward to more vids of your travels! By the way do you feel that you need an annexe for privacy and is the storage a bit tight?

We find the space is fine for us, a lot more than other hybrids we have looked at! I recommend going with the Sarah keelan package! You can get the exact same van as us, solar, extra storage, the works!!

In terms with the annex I think that we didn’t use it on our old van much, we would need to be in a spot for 2-3 weeks before we felt the need to put it up! The awning that comes on the urban has the ability to slide a annex into it on the glide rail!

Great channel guys and I was waiting for this particular van tour. This pretty much ticks all of my boxes as far as a practical easy to tow van is concerned. I run a 94 model 80 series petrol Landcruiser that I love, but fuel economy is around 200 metres to the liter....... ok maybe not .....so a light weight van with all the fruit is a priority for me. I will definitely be checking out this particular van. Your channel and how you present it just gets better each episode and I look forward to watching fellow Sandgropers and their the channel grow. We have weighed the van and the car, the car fully loaded with the van on is 2900kg that’s fueled up, and the van is 2.45t loaded not sure about ball weight

Wow what a van fantastic and OZ MADE
I / We have the Kokoda version of exactly this van...also called the Armorlite. There is some minor variation in specs but basically everything you have we have, ours with Roof mounted A/C so under bed storage, but no inside kitchen. Use a butane stove if needed but otherwise all outside cooking. Not inexpensive but...Easy to tow with our Disco 4, no sway no stress.
Hey Tony, so urban actually sold the design to Kokoda many years ago, Kokoda Armorlite are the same design however wood frame and not tig welded ali frame. Great design lightweight like you said
@@SarahandKeelanTravels Hi Guys, Ours was built 2018 and it was sold as having the welded frame but haven't drilled any new holes to confirm :) Ours also has the air-bag lift for the roof which is just as well...it's a heavy lift with the A/C, Tv aerial, and solar up there.

hey mate its a cracker van, unfortunately you pay for light weight! fair bit of smarts have gone into this one! we sit at around 2.3t GTM fully loaded! epic product

Hi Sarah and Keelan, I just came across this video today and I just loved the fun and honest Aussie presentation by you both. I do like the van. Most Hybrids are too heavy for the Prado (I have a 2018 model) with small payloads and they aren't that comfortable inside. After watching this I've started watching your other videos and researching the Urban. The NSW dealer dosen't get a good review so I was wondering how you went about ordering yours seeing that you were in WA and did the handover at a roadhouse? I look forward to getting up to speed on all your videos.

Glad you found our channel mate and welcome! for sure I hear you.. that was the same issue we had! it was weight saving game and compromising for what we actually wanted in a van! this one was the only one on the market that allowed us to not compromise or have to upgrade towing rigs! mind you though, my Prado is 2011 and yours has the new and improved engine so you'll have no dramas towing the armorlite! Urban have dealers all over Australia apart from Tasmania and NT, Luxury RV is Perths dealer!
Our setup with ordering was slightly different as We currently do Research and Development on Urban Caravans, We are ambassadors of the brand but also test the product and improve little bits and pieces to make the van even better. We had a time restraint before we started our big lap and that's why we shot to the border and grabbed the van! We reserve the right to be able to say whatever we think about the product and hence we just made a video on what's gone wrong with the van.

Nice van , I’ve been tossing up between a camp trailer and there’s hybrids van at the end off the day for me it’s pricing I’m single only have the income so yeah getting one to fit my budget
