- Today I'm chatting through some homeschool changes my family is making. We'll be making five homeschool updates for 2022-2023, and I am excited to see how they'll impact to see how these changes will impact our homeschool schedule. In changing our homeschool, we will be embracing more of a Charlotte Mason homeschool style. We'll be pulling the things we love, much the same way we've always done but to a greater extent, but there will also be a fundamental difference. Watch the entire video to learn more! I think we'll always have a bit of an eclectic homeschool, but I've learned a lot over the couple years since switching to homeschooling, and I'm excited to see what these changes for the homeschool year have in store for us. It’s so nice to see comments like this! We all need to know we’re not dealing with things in isolation and that there are others who can relate.
It’s so interesting to hear you talk about afternoon school, that has been on my heart as well. We have opportunities to be out of the home 3 or 4 mornings a week. 2 of them I often said no to last year because when would school happen if we go?! I have been focusing this summer on training my kids to have a block of time for school, whether it be morning or afternoon. I’m hoping when the fall comes and all the classes come back I can also just say yes and we will do our sit down work at whatever time works. And I’m training myself to also say yes more! I agree!!!
I definitely get why you didn't want to label yourself or box yourself into just one style. I'd say I'm 60% traditional and 40% Charlotte Mason. My girls unfortunately view a lot of reading material as tedious "fluff" and lose interest if it gets drawn out too long, so that's why traditional in some cases works better for us, especially in LA and Math, it just gets straight to the point. But when it comes to history, religion, art, science, and nature studies, Charlotte Mason study is more appreciated and welcomed, so I take full advantage of that and go with it whenever I can. It's so fun, and nurturing, like a big hug ❤️
So great that you’ve found that balance! I definitely think it takes a little time to figure out what really works best for each of our own individual families.

I found the same thing about my son’s demeanor and attitude connected with screen time. Since my husband and I had trouble saying no and setting limits (even for ourselves), we made the bold move to get rid of our tv. I think that decision has enriched my son’s life more than I could know. We still watch family movies on a projector, go to the theater, and watch the occasional UA-cam video on a phone or computer so we aren’t anti-screens, but not having a huge black screen in the living room staring at us all day has definitely helped to take our time back!
That’s wonderful! Even just the placement of our TV has made a difference for us. We had open concept kitchen and living in our old place, so the TV felt like it was in the center of our home. Now we have a secondary living space with the TV room tucked in the back corner of the house, and our family room that’s open to the kitchen is TV free.
My son’s behavior and attention also dramatically changes depending on his screen time. Good for you for being so observant and being brave enough to make those changes because kids will FIGHT to keep their screen time 😂
Haha, thanks! Rowan would still ask me at first thinking I’d forget the new rules. 😂 The girls adapted really quickly though! They’ve learned to fill their time in other ways.

This will be our third year of homeschooling. Our children do well with routines sometimes. I really do not enjoy teaching in the evenings. I am more alert in the mornings. There are days when they do not want to do school because they may feel a little overwhelmed because of the traditional style way I like to teach in, which I will change up some. We will be trying a more student-led/student-interest/unschooling approach even though we are with a charter. I am praying that work better for us this time around. With our oldest going into the 5th grade in the Fall, it is sort of much to deal with. His behavior has changed a lot with our other children following suit (monkey see monkey do). If he does not feel up to doing school their question always is, "Why he does not have to do school and we do." It is hard to explain to them that their older brother is not in the greatest of mood at times. He does have ADHD. Trying to explain that to 6 and 8 year old is hard when they want a break too. Huh... This will be his "last year" in elementary school according to the regular public schools here in our school district. We are a morning type of family but this year that may change. We are incorporating their dad twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm to do homeschool with them. I am hoping that gives them a new face to their learning. They do not watch TV at all during the week unless it is school related just like your family, with Friday being movie night. Our son 9 going on 10 years old (the oldest) loves screen time to do Prodigy Math. Even sometimes he sneaks to get on this tablet or computer whenever I am working with his other two siblings. I am not saying he can not do educational schooling, but I would like for him to complete physical school work. This year we are only using two computers instead of everyone having their own. I may have to have a schedule such as 30 minutes each to use the computers per day. Not yet quite sure. Every child is so very different in their own unique way. I hope this 2022-2003 homeschool year goes well for your family, ours, and others.

We have a hard time stopping for an outside activity and coming back to continue school as well. I look forward to hearing how it goes for you in the new school term.

We do weekend only screen time too! Movie night Friday, Saturday some cartoons, and Sunday some too while my husband watches racing or other sports! 😃 Definitely give it a try!

Yes, there are definitely some areas I am trying to change next year. I want to take our time to enjoy what we are learning rather than pushing so hard to get it all done that we really don't enjoy any of it. I'm planning on doing a lot more notebooking and hopefully lap booking (first-time we'll try it) and not stressing about what doesn't get done.

Congrats on staying with your homeschool journey ! We’ve been homeschooling for 10 years and In our journey there’s different seasons of schooling so it does change year to year. That’s the beauty of it, I’ve always said if I wanted a ridged schedule I’d put my kids in public school. I love afternoon learning it’s definitely more laid back. The freedom of home education is a blessing 🇺🇸✝️❤️

Agree with so much of this.
We started with Classical Conversations and, while I came to disagree with CC philosophically, after three years of homeschooling I find that we are absolutely classical homeschoolers. So I’ve shifted gears in our curriculum to a company that better aligns with my vision for us. But it just takes time to first figure out HOW to homeschool and then to figure out how to refine it to an authentic experience.
So true! Knowing the style you gravitate to most really is helpful in selecting curriculum, but we learn so much about what works and what doesn’t by the actual “doing” of homeschool.
I would love an update how the afternoon schedule goes.

Oh yes.... I'm the exact same way about messes! Hahaha... I absolutely hate play doh! I have also thought that I need to get better about this so I don't make my kids feel bad about doing messy things.
Play-doh I don't mind... any stray crumblies are easy enough to sweep up. Paint and glitter are my nemesis.

Tip: when the messy thing is always an option, it becomes less of a mess!
I am a licensed childcare provider for kids aged 0-7 and playdoh, chalk, watercolor paints, tape and general random craft supplies are always out an available! They learn how to use it appropriately and when it's always an option, it becomes less of a wild mess. They will go crazy at first, but less and less over time :)

When I first got into homeschooling, I read “For the Children’s Sake,” and it was a great little intro to CM. There are a lot of incredible resource online, including A Delectable Education and Simply Charlotte Mason.
