  • Let's chat about fostering independent learning! While I love working alongside my kids, I also prioritize homeschool independent learning. I want my children to grow up to be capable adults, and fostering independence is part of that preparation. I do this through intentionally choosing independent homeschool curriculum for some subjects and finding ways to incorporate independent learning through other resources. Creating time for homeschool independent study is a daily part of our homeschool. Building independent learning skills is something that I believe will benefit my children both now and in the long-term. How are you fostering independent learning in your homeschool? What independent learning strategies would you add?

As homeschooling moms we are so committed to providing the best learning opportunities for our little ones that we may forget to step aside that they may also have the opportunity to learn on their own which is so important in order for them to develop a true love of learning. Thank you for this wonderful reminder 💗☺️

Thank you! I’m doing well, minus the cold and flu season wreaking havoc on my household. 🙃 We’ve just been in a season of me needing to set UA-cam down, but I hope to be back.

My daughter is 11 - we’ve always homeschooled, but she’s really funny. She’s really independent, can do the work on her own- we use ctc for online maths and then beast academy as review for the first quarter. But even though her main math is all online, she wants me to sit with her, just to be social. She reminds me daily that some day she’ll be a teenager so enjoy it while she still wants to snuggle on the couch. ☺️

For to-do lists I'm going to make a weekly list of curriculum / subjects each of my kids has to work through in excel (day specific subjects, but one list per week per child). I will print those for the 1st quarter and bind them with pro-click type binding that I can open up again and add to. I plan to photocopy the daily schedules or tables of content from each publisher and add them to the front of the "student planners". My plan is to train my kids to check each subject/curriculum off their lists as they go and then put the date completed next to each assignment in the tables of content in the front of their planners. I hope to achieve flexibility with what we do in case dates get shifted, etc., and my kids can keep records for me instead of me having to write down everything they did each day. At the end of the year I can compile all their records into one binder. For myself, I will use the planner from Not Consumed Ministries as more of a goal planner for my kids and my homeschool.

I have a 7yo obsessed with lists too! 🙈 I always get my planner from Plum Paper which I love and I used to get him his own personalized planner too. It was just too expensive considering that he wasn’t old enough to use it to the full. Even tho he loved making his own! 🥴 this year I got him one from Well Planned Gal which was way cheaper but great quality and the layout is perfect! Love that the daily sections has lines with boxes to check off which he loves doing. And it has space for things to practice and chores/responsibilities for the day. He’s used it every week so far. Even from kindergarten, I love giving my students some things they can do independently and have ownership of. I recently assigned my 5yo to complete handwriting and explode the code while I grabbed a shower before an appt. When I came out, all her pages were completed and done well and she was playing happily! 🙈 I think giving them those opportunities of independence are so important for the future. Loved your video (all of them really) and all the great tips! 🥰

We've been homeschooling now since the pandemic and LOVE it! I still work full-time, both remotely & in the office split. What has worked for us when it comes to independent work, to do lists, etc. is Homeschool Planet. You can create your own lesson plans and load it for your kids, even add chores, etc. to their list. It helps me keep track of what did or did not get accomplished. My kids are 14, 12 & twin 11 year-olds, so it might not work for you now?....but something to look into. I only wish it was more phone/app friendly. It's another way I keep track of grades and possibly the transcript thing in the future? Not yet sure how that works.

We’re giving Teaching Textbooks a try this year too. Both hubby & I work “on-call” outside of the home, so there is absolutely NO stability. I felt overwhelmed after we completed our LA & reading, kiddo needed a break, I needed to answer work emails, etc. It was hard to get back in the rhythm to finish math. So Teaching Textbooks will help get that subject off my plate.
Random, I’m excited about the Great Homeschool Convention next week in TX! I’m sure I will buy all the things, wish me luck!

Yes! Being able to outsource certain subjects or have work students independently is especially helpful when you add work outside the home to our roles as home educators. It's good for us and our kids!

I bought my rising 5th grader an Elementary planner from Plum Paper and I think it's going to be perfect for us. They have custom options which is pretty cool. I'll probably fill it out for him for at least the first few months.

It’s going well! We really found a groove with it and figured out the modifications that work for us. I’d love to do an update but have been on a season where I’ve had to set UA-cam down. I hope to be back though. 😁
