Terry Kath is a guitar god.
I'm sure others will talk about it too, but Terry died in early 1978 and Chicago's sound changed afterward, going toward the smoother soft-rock sound of "If You Leave Me Now" led by band member Peter Cetera. Many Chicago fans (myself included) view the two eras a two separate bands.
The craziest thing (to me) about 70s Chicago is that their first 3 albums are all double albums released within 3 years. That's an insane amount of output.
You really can't go wrong with any selection from them in this time period. "I'm a Man" is a must-listen, and I've always been a big fan of "Beginnings."
Of course, no guitar rock delve into the early 70s is complete without listening to "One of These Days" by Pink Floyd!!

Chicago never really did tour with Earth Wind and Fire until the early to mid 1990s. And how can you say that you're from Chicago and not hear about the group? Robert Lamm, who wrote the song, said that the title was in reference to looking at a clock and trying to figure what time it was. Jimi Hendrix's exact quote was, "You guys are great. The horns are like another set of lungs. And your guitar player is better than me." After Hendrix saw them at The Whiskey A Go Go, where the conversation with Robert Lamm that the quote was from, he had them as an opening act on tour with him. Walter Parazaider was actually first chair in the Chicago symphony. And James Pankow has been doing their horn arrangements ever since the first album, The Chicago Transit Authority. They had to shorten their name to Chicago because Mayor Richard Daley threatened to sue the band for using a service name.

True story: in 1978 the guitarist Terry Kath was playing around with guns pretending to shoot himself. His band mate told him to stop. Kath picked up a semi auto 9mm, ejected the clip, showed the empty clip to his band mate, and said “Look... the clip’s not even in it””. He then put the gun to his temple, and pulled the trigger. That's not what it's about at all. In the 70s artists had to disguise references to drugs they couldn't outright say it like today's artists. 25 or 6 to 4 means how much weed they bought at the time. $25 which gave them enough grams for 6 or 4 joints.

The song has a bit of irony to it as the lyrics describe him trying to write this song, which in turn... becomes the song. Searching for something to say, getting up to splash my face, sitting crosslegged on the floor... all these lines describe either what he was doing or seeing at the time. The title is the time on the clock.

Chicago is so versatile going from this song which is so upbeat, to "Does anybody really know what time it is?" as a slow and pensive tone, to "Beginnings" as an overall happy and endearing song that covers the type of love everyone tries to find. If you cover more of Chicago, I recommend these two. Even as a millennial, Chicago is still able to reach my generation. Sadly, Terry Kath died accidentally when he shot himself in the head at a party showing his friends his gun collection. They continued on after his death to much success, but we can only wonder where they would have gone if Terry Kath would have lived. 👍😎🍺

In a 2013 interview, Robert Lamm said he composed "25 or 6 to 4" on a twelve-string guitar with only ten strings - it was missing the two low E strings - and that he wrote the lyrics in one day. The band first rehearsed the song at the Whisky a Go Go.[2]
Lamm said the song is about trying to write a song in the middle of the night. The song's title is the time at which the song is set: 25 or 26 minutes before 4 AM.[3][4] Because of the unique phrasing of the song's title, "25 or 6 to 4" has been interpreted to mean everything from a quantity of illicit drugs to the name of a famous person in code.[5]
The song's opening guitar riff has been compared to chord progressions and riffs in other songs. In the opinion of writer Melissa Locker:
...the opening guitar riff from Green Day’s 'Brain Stew' bears a striking similarity to the opening stanza of Chicago’s '25 or 6 to 4.

I grew up with Chicago, I had two brothers loved Chicago. There were always consider a "Orchestra Band", because they incorporated the full spectrum of instruments into most of their music.
Peter Cetera sang lead on this track - despite his jaw being wired shut. A few months before the recording session, the band went to a baseball game at Dodger Stadium, where their hometown team, the Chicago Cubs, beat the Dodgers, leaving four marines angry and ready to take their aggression out on someone. That someone was Cetera, who was singled out by his long hair as much as his team loyalty. The ensuing brawl sent him to intensive care with a jaw broken in three places. When it came time to record the song, his jaw was still wired shut.

The real deal. Chicago was one of the early fusion bands, blending jazz, rock and pop and some classical elements too. The heart of the band is the brass section, who were all music majors at De Paul University. Walter (the sax player) was actually the founder of the band, pulling in friends from numerous bar bands playing the college scene in Chicago. The story about Hendrix is true - they were both playing at Whiskey-A-Go-Go in L.A. and he made the comment to Walter during a practice session. Check out virtually any song from their first 12 albums - Dialogue (Part I & II) from Chicago V would be my first recommendation.

I love how you guys incorporate this like a radio show. Putting your own feel and expression, drawing upon other songs :D

Saw them in concert live 2 years ago and they still rock as if they're in their prime. Awesome band!! Had the pleasure of also playing a few of their songs when I was in marching band in college, that was always a fun show, and the crowd always got into it. Really cool to see you guys react to this, thanks for this one!

Danny Seraphine is one of the most grossly under rated drummers in rock!

Danny Seraphine and Michael Shrieve from the early Santana are two forgotten heroes of drumming history

Jimmy Page And Jimi Hendricks admired how good Terry Kath was on the lead guitar. They said he was the best of that era!

Chicago was never #1 on my list, but I thought I should go see them live anyway. One of the best concert experiences I've ever had. Anyone would be doing themselves a favor experiencing them live.

Saw these guys in concert and it was like an orchestra. Fantastic band.
