    We got this for the toddler room ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxdzUap46p9ViXhKZf5mK_bXOb89EHxTqq because of the bladeless feature. Actually has a lot more power than I thought it would. Can still feel the air moving well 6 feet away, which is farther than I would expect from a desk fan. My daughter dropped twice and still works. I haven't checked out how long it lasts on a charge yet, but the air output was still good for the few minutes it was unplugged. My daughter also likes the color lights feature, but I don't really care for it and can be annoying to go through all the options before it turns off. Overall, happy with the purchase, especially for the price

      Isn't the real Dyson bladeless fan based on something about ionic charging of the air, so that it rushes from one side of the fan to the other thus picking up momentum and creating air currents? If so, then to make one of those I think you need to build some high voltage generator or something.

    • @insanehosein6230
      @insanehosein6230 7 років тому +23

      Actually the real dyson fan is built exactly like the one in this video. There is a fan in the base that gets pushed through an extremely small gap that "amplifies" the air current.

    Pretty slick design, I like the re-purposing of other household materials. I'm sure that by now you've considered some improvements. Based on what I see here, the two major problems immediately obvious to me are *Noise* and *Air Flow*. So for those two issues, here are some options:
    1. Noise. This can be improved in several ways.
    a) using a small piece of rubber or other vibration absorbent material between the wood support block and the motor would reduce the whine of the motor. Adding the same rubber to the base would reduce vibrations conducting into the surface it's sitting on.
    b) balancing the blades better would reduce vibrations in the whole system. This can be accomplished when you are first using the compass to draw the circle on the metal: Once the circle is drawn, put the pin on the edge of the circle and make a mark with the pen on the circle, then move the pin to that mark and repeat all the way around. This will give you 6 marks, split the distance between them for a total of 12 smaller, equally sized blades. Next, balance the fan on a nail or pin in the centre hole, and mark the side that hangs lower (heavier) Use sand paper to remove tiny amounts of metal, and repeat until it sits perfectly level.
    c) use sand paper or steel wool to sand all of the edges of the blades to remove any burrs or rough spots which produce the "wooshing" air noise. Painting the whole thing with high gloss paint or nail polish will also reduce air noise.
    2. Overall air volume: At the end of the video, you can see the paper strips at the edges are moving, but the centre ones move much less, this tells us we don't have enough _oomph_ in this design for the size of the orifice. The "magic" happens due to a phenomenon known as the _Venturi_ effect (an example of _Burnoulli's Principle_); in a tightly engineered fan, the the throat/pedestal fan output is balanced to the orifice size (the big O made of the bucket) and the gap/angle that allows air to pass into/through the orifice. As high velocity air leaves the gap in the rim of the orifice, it produces a difference in air pressure across the orifice, which is how it is able to move more air than just what is moved by the throat fan. In this video, the throat fan output is undersized for the orifice/gap. The basic solution is simply to reduce the size of the orifice, thus increasing the pressure differential, subsequently increasing total air movement.
    Getting the fan design to match the Orifice size, gap, and angle for maximum efficiency can be a severe pain in the butt. If I remember right, Dyson uses between 12 and 18 degrees for the pressurized air angle, but getting that precise in a home-made model might be a bit difficult. I'm also unconvinced that this is a critical step. However, the fan design makes a big difference. Smaller blades with a sloped curve would give the fan output less velocity but more pressure; as the size of the orifice is reduced, the pressure output of the fan becomes more critical than the volume of air moved. With some patience, a person could tweak this build several times to determine the best design. After all, that (plus some crazy math) is how Dyson came up with their ubiquitous fans.

      all so called "bladeless fans" are actually made with blades, even the originals. it refers to a type of fan with hidden blades, the name is just marketing bullshit and always has been. though why he would bother to make one that is this loud is beyond me. they aren't that expensive to buy. and quite frankly i'd rather have a normal fan, the airflow on these hidden designs is never as good as what you would get without the airflow restriction

    At first, I thought this was another one of those crewel joke videos, taking advantage of someone's desire to save money. And then I did the research. No doubt, the same research you did, Nd learned you were working off the Dyson blade-less system. Very cool, how you worked out how to t turn a bucket's rim into an airfoil. By the way, you didn't have to built the impeller. You only needed a 40mm PC core cooling fan. These run much quieter, and are far more aerodynamically efficient, and yo don't have to cut your fingers to shreds on the diy turbine, whilst cutting it out by hand. :) Thanks for the video. Try the PC fan, and let me know how it works.

    You made the cowl duct backwards. By using the wider side as output, you create a low pressure region within the ring, so you aren't moving any of the ambient air through the ring, it's just blowing a much lower volume of air from the fan itself. That defeats the entire purpose of the design. Try doing it again, but having output holes on the smaller side, and notice how the increased pressure combines the output air with the ambient air passing through the ring for more efficiency and higher output.

      You could probably make something similar to an EDF (Electric Ducted Fan), it just wouldn't be very efficient compared to a normal propeller. Definitely a cool idea though, because there would be no risk of anything getting chopped by fan blades.

      Very interesting... I'd imagine heat management would be complex. But the benefits could be really interesting, what with FOD and bird strike damage being greatly reduced because the "fan" part has no blades, foreign objects that get sucked in would just fly out the other side.

      The Dyson fan works by having an impeller at the base like this one. However the cone is designed to multiply the air stream by inducing the air behind it to flow in the same direction as the jet streams. From what I can see in this one at the end, all the paper strips in the middle remain undisturbed, so this is definitely not an "air multiplier".
