Alec I dare you to make a sword without any Power tools
Could you have etched the scrollwork into the guard?
Alec why not 3d print that fancy pattern, then cast it into steel and use that as a stamp to hammer that engraving into the cross guard?
Alex can you make videos faster... thanks.
you gonna make a sheath to go along with the sword?
Next time on the Alec "4 Finger" Steele show, How not to use a grinder attached to a lathe lol
I have seen every form of power tool imaginable connected Rube Goldberg-style to a lathe: chain saw, router, table saw, chop saw, torch, water jet cutter, sandblaster.. A surprising number of people who pull such stunts survive them intact for years. Still, it's not the way I'd want to see Alex's career end.
As if there will be a next video, it's gonna be a memorial video
@@nathanbrindley5820 We can be calm for a while; there's every chance Alex merely means to use the lathe as a vice around a fixed center, not spinning up to speed. Still, looks like a very shaky vice; why wouldn't he just weld the workpiece to a mounting plate, and grind off the weld marks after?
@@bartroberts1514 the work price is close to the tolerance, if he were to weld it he'd lose alot more material on the ends
might be the worst thing to do in a workshop.except maybe for using a grinder to spin a blade while quenching it.
I love Jamie's increased involvement
Agreed!
Just use a file mate. You don't need to add the grinder into the equation, it's already spinning!
I'm guessing the idea of the grinder is stay as far away as possible and only stand close enough to spin the handles on the lathe.
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn Yeah and I'd be doing that with something to extend my reach, to hell with peering over it.
The reason he is not using a file is the same reason he isn't using a cutting tool for the lathe; the work is unsupported at the end. The "dog" will hold the work in place but it isn't strong enough to hold a file to. The grinder has enough power to remove material without applying pressure to the end of the piece.
@@jacobmaccharles7468 So use smaller passes. It's a big, pretty high quality machining tool. It can probably do small enough increments to have the tool pressure be lower than the chuck pressure.
@@jacobmaccharles7468 That's actually not true. He's turning between centers, one center in the headstock, and one in the tailstock. The dog isn't for workholding, but merely to transmit torque. Ironically, between centers is about as well supported that a work can be in the lathe.
The progression: Mill > Belt grinder > Lathe + angle grinder lash-up > Tourniquet > Hospital. ;)
It’s a good thing he did those safety videos about what to do if you cut off your leg.
Yep - this whole thing is probably just marketing for his self-save kits.
He did say that the order of operations was important!
im laughing so damn hard here from that comment....
Well now we know what Ryobi is about to add to their "Do NOT do this with our tools" section... Assuming something like that was not already on there.
When Alec said "To the grinding room!" You all could have had a Batman like transition using the Steele anvil logo!
Omg yes I support this!
I second it, specially the sound effect
That Lathe contraption seems like one of the brilliant ideas of a group of Drunken Texans who weld the barrels of two guns together to see what happens if they fire them both off at the same time. My general rule of thumb is that anything that involves zip-tying a safety feature in the "safe to operate" position and/or turning a power tool on and off at the power source is a "bad" idea.
That’s a pretty particular rule Like it tho
Seen far worse than this.. from a man that used to wear nothing but flipflops and cargo shorts in the shop.. hes just about ok so alec should be fine. One would hope
@@richard-gn3es well, as I said to my coworkers a while ago. OSHA regs aren't there for the 10,000 times you've done it before, they're for the one time things go wrong.
@@ZevVeli as an individual im guessing he assessed his personal risk and decided it was within what he deems acceptable.
Regulations are usually to protect companies and those that work for them. And not to private citizens... I do not think alec is in any real danger. Well not more than usual using large powerful machines..
@@richard-gn3es Tell that to 4 craneworkers that just died cos they threw every safety procedure in the wind and the crane they worked on collapsed.
Alec this would be a good time to insert the DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME STATEMENT
I already tried it, luckily I wasn't at home or I coulda died!
This deserves a "Do not try at home, work or anywhere for that matter, ever" sign.
Better yet, insert DO NOT TRY THIS AT ALL!
That's a "Do NOT try this ever for all times!"
Also a "Alec do not try this period". He jsut said it himself. You get confident, you get cocky, and things go wrong. With the piece of equipment he himself said is the most likely to kill him in the workshop.
Please Alec, a joke idea like that is not worth the risk.
8:15 following on from this series' return to normal programming I expected a nostalgic "BLOOOOOOOO DYKEM" moment.
Need a tool, make a tool (although this particular tool is probably the beginning of a very bad idea).
I really admire your "Measure thrice, measure thrice more, cut once." mentality. Makes me smile every time.
measure thrice, measure thrice more, cut thrice, throw away the part, get a new chunk of metal, and repeat thrice....
hehe that would be a nice t shirt for the merchandiseshop.
I measured 6 times yesterday and still screwed it up.
Next episode: How to launch a batterydriven anglegrinder thru the wall of your workshop.
Bro you almost made me spit my beer out xD
@@jju7469 My apologies :)
The Incredible Hulk: The Cordless Tool Edition!
Or how not to!!🙏🏻🤣🤣🤣
I'm a CNC machinist. I do the setups on our Mills. We have an old lathe we use in the tool room. My operator asked me the other day what would happen if he stuck his hand in the chuck while it was spinning. It's a 10" chuck and I had it just over 400 RPM. I laughed and told him it would suck him in and spit him out the other side.
The higher the grit, the slower you should be running the grinder.. This allows you to keep accurate surfaces..
As for the angle grinder, there is such a thing as a mill-lathe, and it is possible to attach a spindle motor to the lathe carriage, but the angle grinder is a bad idea mainly because it is a grinder: abrasives and machined ways should never meet..
Listen to this guy Alec
Tool post grinder.
Exactly. This is bad in so many ways.
I have no experience with a lathe, but I am an electrician so I do know my angle grinders... and I wouldn't have done that!! :D
But out of curiosity since you seem to know your lathes: Would/should you ever use a handfile on a laithe? -Cuz I might be idiot enough to try that if not warned! :D
@@JokerInk-CustomBuilds that’s perfectly fine to do. Just keep an eye out and be safe. Always watch where it’s pointed, but using a file is extremely common to knock off burrs and clean up threads and such.
Lol grinding room disco
“Let’s sell some @$&!*#% grinders!!”
that needs to be a shirt yesterday
@@stookinthemiddle lol I’d buy one!
All right, back to work
I died
My favorite part of the whole video
Grinding is absolutely the most "hip hop" thing about forging. Well said Alec
When Will was around he did all the grinding. Alec got spoiled 😂
Where did he go
How is it so beautiful so early onto this 342.45 part series?!?!
Don't worry we have not seen him restart several times :)
In part 12 he’s going to decide to learn a completely new skill and that’ll be part 13 on
@@D.Schrader Luckily :D
@@robertrhoads6248 And that skill might just be the engraving portion Haha
Almost every time Alec has a montage of something. Like grinding the guard. Im always on edge waiting for the epic music to abruptly end, having Alec running through the workshop all "NO! ... No! No! NO! It broke."
Please don't use your grinders near lathe. Grinding dust can destroy lathe's bed.
You're entirely correct and it's bad practice in general, but I don't think that lathe is ever going to make anything with submillimeter accuracy anymore.
if you cover the bed and have a vacuum near the cut to try and suck up most of it, then it is fine, many people do it with no problem. Alec is doing it the no no way.
Do see why he can't grind a shaping tool for the lathe. A quater circle.
@@Xlaxsauce yeah a shaping tool would be the best i guess he figures is not supported enough tho, I mean with a sharp tool you could take light enough cuts it would be fine
Old guy I work with told me the same thing. I was grinding near my Bridgeport. I wasn't getting anything near it. But he's like a Dad.
I now have a vision of watching Alec do incredibly intricate engravings thirty years from now when he IS a master engraver. Makes me excited for his future.
Watching the trouble you are having making these complex shapes with a plethora of modern equipment at your disposal gives me a whole new appreciation for the original craftsmen who accomplished that level of perfection using only medieval tools and techniques. 😲
That disco grinder spot was unexpected. Loved the humor.
I've been eying at those grinders for a long time already, a pity that as a student I don't yet have the funds for something like that.
Same
I love the way you're explaining more what you're doing in this project than in previous quick projects. This is better (like the good old long projects)
Before I order a grinder I'll wait for the next episode. Just to be sure there is someone left with hands attached to his body to ship the thing.
I just finished re-watching the old Viking Axe series. It is awesome to see how far you have come Alec. In the pieces you create, your business and cinematography. Keep crushing it mate 🤙
I love that your hip idea for grinding was a disco, but I can honestly say that you have never made grinding feel like a grind. The moment I decided to subscribe to your channel was watching a long grinding episode, but still being engaged.
Am I the only one to be glad the blue dycam is back? Feels like home now
You need a Beyond The Press Safety Screen 10 Million for that lathe-grinder combo!
you know i read that with his voice right? 😂
Join us next episode in front of the white board where Jamie explains what happened to Alec. Heaven forbid. Take great care Alec, we need you in one piece to attempt that detailed design. Challenge extended, we believe in you.
Alec, that grinder idea is a bad bad bad idea. You really need to have more respect for these tools. You've been incredibly lucky in injuries you have received. And you had one run-in on the lathe pretty recently too! You should make a sturdy holder for it that WILL fit in the lathe so it can be cut with the lathe, instead of risking the health and safety of both you, your camera man, and any other person or pet in the area.
This is correct, Alphawolf. Alec, please think before you do your stupid things...
Meh...Grip it an rip it! Who needs 10 fingers anyways?
ah I was wondering when the health and safety bores would comment, cant even enjoy a funny 5 second clip, sheesh you guys are worse than vegans.
Feeling myself falling back in love with your channel. This is what you were built for.
The level of commitment to the grinder rebranding bit was golden.
Im so happy to see a Brit employ some southern engineering
The disco grinder room bit was the most Jeremy Clarkson thing I've seen since Grand Tour! Great stuff! Nothing more hip hop than a disco 🤣
I don’t even do blacksmithing but damn I want a grinder
Get a welder and a grinder. The grinder and some paint will make you the welder you ain't.
Set it up in your kitchen and call it an electric tater peeler.
I love grinding on a 2x72 you get into a rhythm and you feel calm and time flies as you hopefully make something cool
As an upper secondary school vocational teacher, I just love your stuff. You would become a great teacher if you wanted to.
As a mechanical engineer, I have no words for what he did with the lathe
You can really see how much the team loves filming in the grinding room
cnc milling is the new grinding. welcome to 2021. love your work.
In addition to the "you may injure yourself" issues with the lathe+grinder combo...
Put something on the ways of your lathe to keep grinder grit off of them.
Alec! Buy a high quality 'roughing endmill'! When you're hogging out material you can push it faster since you don't need to be worried about surface finish (and tbh, the surface finish is still good enough most times!).
At the end you're definitely talking about a lathe dog. We used them to transfer force from the part to the head spindle while we contour a rifle barrel while I was in school.
7 months? Perfect! I look forwards to it!
That grindroom disco was the best gosh darn thing i have ever seen on youtube.
Legends
the disco scene is why I love it when you're back in the UK, you and Jamie together make the funniest and most fun clips
So glad I rediscovered your channel right as you were starting another big project. Love your work!
Alec if you make the arm of the spindle dog out of thicker steel you'll have all the rigidity you need to use a regular OD turning tool. Also, the classic style of spindle dog would be a great easy forging project that you'll find use for with other lathe projects!
This is the point where Alec got the moniker "lefty, stumpy, or walleye" Your choice.
I think we can assume that if the July 15 event is not cancelled then Alec is still alive, and probably still has enough fingers to type.
So at least one finger, then?
Actually i have used an angle grinder in my lathe as a tool post grinder, i made an attachment that bolts onto the angle grinder where the secondary handle mounts and that attachment is shaped to fit into my tool post, its served me well for years.
Protect you lathe bed from the grinder dust, it will heavily scratch and ruin them
Never regret a chore during the process
Learned that as an apprentice at the beginning of a 37 year career
That grinding disco made Alec too excited and now he's all carried away with these grinder hacks
You can do a quick check on your positive and negative spaces and linear scribing by making a paper template folded both diagonally and laterally and cut. When you lose your lines one way or another, you can check them easily.
When you facet, use a straight edged hand file to finish, to preserve your surfaces. You could also use some blank edged files that have the dile face only one one or two sides, to preserve adjacent surfaces.
Is it just me or does the bit about the grinding room feel like its straight from an episode of the Ideas Men? haha BRILLIANT
Hey Alec, just a tip - I own one of these grinders as well and built a 600x200mm build plate from 10mm mild steel with some 10mm fixturing holes if you wanted some DXF files!! Cheers
Alec, you should try printing onto transparency sheets instead of paper. That way you could more easily line up your marks with any point on the steel underneath.
Alec.........I've watched you since you were in your little shop at the beginning.....you have come leaps and bounds in your journey and skill set. Take your time and I know you can pull off the scroll work. And the best part is if it takes you longer.......MORE EPISODES FOR US TO WATCH!!! 😃
Tips to make your work easier and consistent.1: Use transfer paper to transfer your design to the material..and avoid the paper glueing thing. 2: Create (even possibly sell) and Angle Grinder Table. That way you can always/consistently hit the right angle on a blade without holding the blade up on the air.
Okay, so, as a toolmaker I can tell you that drilling is faster than milling. Next time you have a project to rough out, try using the end of the endmill instead of the side. Use your depth stop, lower the table until the cutter won't cut where you don't want it to, and use the y axis to advance the cutter. If you advance approximately .100" for each cut, and cut using the quill as your cutting feed you will be surprised how quickly and easily it will go.
thinking about how you make a snow ball in your hands. maybe something concave and in the shape you want to have as an end result, super glue sand paper in the concave with a shaft that is welded to it and fits into a drill chuck. Might could work?
"to the grinding room!" followed by putting on headphones the same way someone would put on a cape. well done sir.
In woodworking one of the ways to make a sphere on a lathe is to feed a hole saw of the same diameter as the desired ball size, I've also seen it done with metal using diamond hole saws.
Alec,
When you finally get back to the United States it would be a good idea to take an engraving class. There are a couple great schools that teach metal engraving in the U.S. that specialize in traditional styles commonly used on firearms.
Everytime Alec goes on mill I get anexity 😂 scratch that every time he uses a machine
It is so weird that your workshop smells normal to you. But when some else comes in is like omg it has a heavy smell of steel in here I am getting outside. 🤣🤣
I only now realized that it's not just Alex in the grinding room. It's also Jamie. And has always been.
Oh my god I feel so sorry for Jamie right now!
Alec: what do you think about this design?
Jamie: that's enough content for a year!
NOW IM A LOYAL PROUD FAN TO THIS CHANNEL
Here's an idea Alec, design a rotary attachment for use with your grinders a slow moving motor and some form of chuck/vice to hold the parts, and a variable speed control. You can buy the speed controllers off Amazon for like £20 for a decent one.
Love the video! Explaining everything and taking us along for the ride! This is going to be one monster project and I've waited a while for this! Very Excited!
Thanks .you are the best one who gave rich details for the sword guard making appreciate it.
A lot of people are saying this is a bad idea, but you've basically rigged up a makeshift toolpost grinder, which is a very common lathe attachment. Just make sure to clean your ways thoroughly afterward to make sure you don't get any abrasives in there. Maybe put down a towel to protect them during the operation, too.
3:19 I love how your dog checks if it’s food on the table, then gets disappointed when it’s not 🤣
Alec is grounded!
We installed that grinder so you could form wondrous works of art. Not so you could throw grinder belt raves!
Grinding sucks but it’s something that needs to be done. The better the grinder, that faster and easier it goes..... which is why I spend so much time grinding when I have to.
For the disco, you could use some of Test Dept's music. They're an industrial band that formed in London in the early 80s and they actually used grinders, welders, and other industrial tools in their music. Shockwork is a solid choice as they went hard with the grinders in it.
I'd suggest using a 90 degree pneumatic grinder with a disk attachment to use in a lathe, done it many times and it works great for what you are doing.
That lathe grinder situation looks exactly how I solve problems in the workshop.
Somewhere there's an OSHA book bursting into flames lol
16th July...... Alec Steele, live, ....... from the local hospital 😬 Please be careful...... and where a LOT of PPE!!! and a shield!! It is definitely looking good so far 👍👍👍
I would also think about getting grinding compound (or dusts or chips) on you ways, and messing up your lathe
Tbf i really enjoy grinding, i find it very soothing, so not everyone hates the grinding room jamie *ahem* alec
I woke up and this is the first thing I see! Yay
Good morning, I hope you have a nice day!
Good morning it's 2 in the us
It was 8 pm in the Netherlands.
Alec, why not make HSS cutting tool to radius the ends.
After the initial cutting with end mills, you could switch to a ball mill to get even closer to the lines and save yourself some time with the grinder.
Alec, you can always do a hand sanding video to show how much better grinding is. ;-)
You're definitely stepping into Michaelcthulhu territory with that grinder lathe setup
It's coming along great! 👍
Might want to use a slightly worn grinding disk so the brand new one doesn't cut with sharp angles at the sides of the disk.
Superglued mdf sounds flammable
Jamie...I love you man. Keep powering through.
Bolt a piece of heavy flat bar to the angle grinder's handle attachment threaded hole. Clamp the flatbar into the tool holder. Use a lock washer on the bolt to ensure it stay put. Run the lathe in reverse at a relatively low speed. Make very light "cuts". And yes, the abrasive dust won't be fantastic for the ways, clean them well after and don't do this often and you'll be fine, it's not like it will immediately wear the ways down to nothing.
I hope it will stay with only sparks Alec
The facets explanation was fascinating.
I think you should go for it, make sure you film in slow-mo so you have the best footage when it blows up. Maybe get a full body plexiglass shield first.
Disco grinding, the best kind of grinding
So glad we're back to using blue dykem
Remember to cover the ways of the lathe when grinding! Don't want that abrasive grinder dust all over your high precision machine.
Well, I was on the fence about grinders with all that belabored antipathy, but after that disco, I am sold!
