I first saw and heard David Russell in a small concert held in a church in Presteigne in North Herefordshire on the border with Wales, many years ago when he was a young man . I thought then that he was a brilliant musician and scholar of the guitar. I thought I would hear him again all over the place, but he must have gone to the home of the guitar and it's music in Spain.. Now here we are many years and much water passed under the bridge, I discover this, to all intents and purposes is a private concert for me alone with my posh headphones on being transported back to a previous but not totally forgotten life, when my late wife and I used to travel to concerts and theatre all over the marches. Now at 79 I'm blessed to have these modern accoutrements that enable me to watch and listen to such a beautiful performance by a master. As an aside I had a stroke last year, which made me give and sell all my guitars bar one, which was kept by my granddaughter's partner, so, on March 23 this year 2023 I started all over again from the beginning to learn the guitar. Hence this find on youtube, Thank you thank you, thank you, what a find ❤
Dear Brian, I hope that at 79 you have placed your faith in Jesus😊. If not, Good Friday thru Resurrection Sunday is a wonderful opportunity! I hope to meet you in Heaven someday.
David... you play like a God! I studied classical guitar many years ago... guitar performance was my major all the way through graduate school at Florida State under Bruce Holzman. I quit playing about 35 years ago, selling my guitar and never wishing for it to enter my life ever again. Until, that is, I heard you play. Hearing you brought me back a flood of memories. I just found the most magnificent Martin classical guitar on sale at (believe it or not) a used bookstore and purchased it. It has such a lovely tone, playing it was love at first sight... like meeting an old friend! Of course, my technique is not what it used to be. I am starting off with Sor and Aguado studies. Surprisingly, my muscle memory is still intact after all these years. I will be working my way up to Bach in no time! Thank you, Sir, for lighting the fire!
As a decent classical guitarist I would highly recommend to stay away from Bach you need at least 4-5 years of solid experience before you touch Bach I mean u can play basic Bach stuff but pieces which David Russell plays you will go mad just trying to figure them out and playing them would be the harder part
Interesting story. Why did you quit playing guitar after investing in formal studies through graduate school? You were obviously very serious about your craft. And I am most curious about your statement, "never wishing for it to enter my life ever again."
I just saw your post from a year ago. And I wish you a long life and filled with the beauty of Music which you've discovered a year ago I am 75 years old and have love music for the greater part of my adult life. I've been blessed by music of beauty, and I wish you the same and more.
Fluency, politeness, interpretation and style fidelity. These are some of the features found in this presentation. A gift from God. Thanks a lot, David Russel!
One good thing comes from the current situation. Over 100,000 could experience his artistry and the composer|s gifts in that perfect ambience. It would be impossible live...... Thank you Mr. Russell. I have CD=s you made years ago and have enjoyed them so much Mr. Goss, thank you for creating modern pieces that are lyrical and sound authentic for the instruments qualities. What an artist to play them! Blessings.
Mr. David Russell, an outstanding example of what a human can achieve if so dedicated. For me (and I would hope many others) it has always been uplifting, and more importantly inspiring to witness what Russell, Bream and many others have been able to achieve with this magnificent instrument. A huge Thanks to all who made this concert possible and to the composers and arrangers of the past and present.
The greatest classical guitarist of my generation. Soul, touch, beauty, every time I hear him play I am moved and reminded why I dedicated my life to the guitar and classical music. Bravo doesn’t say it enough. I sat ten feet from Segovia on stage and just as close to Bream in the front row, and David Russell is one of them, and in his own individual way.
yes but no real musical intellect and hes so musically conservative - compare him to Bream! How many great works has David Russell's playing inspired?? Nada.Zilch.None. That tells you something about his playing i think. And in South American repertoire he lacks real rhythmic vitality particularly Barrios. He should listen to Alirio Diaz more.
I agree that he is a generational player, and I'm of that generation too. His tone production seems naturally big round and ravishing, and that is the rarest quality to me. I'm a little jealous that you sat so up-close to the maestros. I only got to see Segovia in a 2500-seater with a barbaric overhead microphone.
sublime David. Como se nota cuando an una persona le gusta el arte y aprecia la musica, la cultura... it is privilege to be able to listen your great performance in such lovely churches.
This is actually concert #632 performed in these churches at no cost to the public and pilgrims walking 500 miles to save their souls ! Thank you Omni Foundation for taking this worldwide.
He belongs to my selected few favorites. He truly makes the guitar sing in all registers and he makes it look so easy. I also love how he carefully selects his settings in Spain.
Here I am 2 years later (with no one in between !). I fall in love with other guitarists, and if they are really great I wind up calling THEM thee greatest EVER !! This lasts a certain length of time..Then, I, after a long spell, realize I haven't listened to Dave in a long long time.. I then put Dave on the screen and immediately realize I am listening to and witnessing THEE GREATEST classical guitarist in the world.... Most of us know the other names who, yes, are brilliant..But when I come back to Mr. Russell I just melt over this, the highest level of ability with the most difficult instrument of them all ... If Segovia was undoubtedly the best through the, say, 1970s (+-), David Russell in my opinion, is of that ilk today.......Here's to you David Russell !.. 🍺 Mark Harris Los Angeles, California, US
From Carrión de los Condes, at the very heart of the Camino, I'd like to thank David, María Jesús and Federico for this invaluable gift, and Omni Foundation for taking it worldwide. We are so used to seeing our churches that we tend to forget how beautiful they are, even more when their naves are filled with such wonderful music so beautifully performed. THANKS.
Simply magical! I've had the pleasure of seeing him perform live twice and it was pure heaven. A brilliant artist. He is one of a handful of masters who are instantly recognizable by their sound, phrasing and articulation. Segovia, Bream, Williams, Parkening, Fisk, Russell....... all are artists you can recognize just by listening
I recently had the privilege of sitting in the front row of a David Russell performance and it was comparable to my seeing Segovia and Parkening several years ago. I believe that unless you've undertaken the challenge of the Classical Guitar it's difficult to fully understand what a true MASTER we're given the privilege of witnessing. Further, he tackles some of the most incredible pieces and understands the history of the instrument far beyond anyone I've ever had the privilege of witnessing. Bravo Mr. Russell!
He was a great player no doubt.Sadly the last two recitals i attended there were fistfuls of mistakes and the audience was noticably disturbed by all the nervous tension..Maybe i got him on a bad day(s) Love him when hes on form however.
David, thank you. Perfection, Superb performance, masterfully played. No one outplays you. Such beauty. The pieces that were dedicated to you and your wife, Marie, were lovely.👏👏👏👏
Complete classical guitar mastery. Unbelievable technical ability and artistic interpretation. The Bach pieces were absolutely exquisite. David, thanks so much for sharing and for your tireless devotion to the classical guitar. Soli Deo Gloria
I took this trip 3 years ago by bicycle went to some of the same places, it brings me to tears hearing David play so beautifully in that magical part of Spain.
The first time i heard David play was when the british embassy brought him to manila. He was a young man but his playing was so precise and clean . It was way beyond his years and here he is now, like fine wine he has aged well and still has that beautiful tone and clarity. Truly a master of his instrument ! Thank you for posting this.
Thank you, David, for the outstanding, exquisite concert. It brings beautiful memories from all locations. Dear Stephen, your Cantigas de Santiago are so delicate and inspiring! Thank you! Many thanks to Omni Foundation for a wonderful project! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you DAVID RUSSELL-Patricio Contreras my GUITAR MAESTRO he suggested I take a Master Class with you so I did it was decades ago! in Seattle WA at the Rosewood Guitar your a brilliant Maestro of Guitar.
David, this is almost as good as having you visit in person because in addition to your own good self you bring also a part of Europe to us! Love this presentation and the wonderful music. Thank you David Russell, Steve Goss and Omni!
I believe David may be the greatest musician playing guitar today. In other words, he is a musician before he is a guitarist. He gives listeners so many things to enjoy and admire other than technique. I think this is most apparent in the two Bach chorale preludes, but also in the Steve Goss work. I think David's a true inheritor of the Segovia legacy in that he not only brings music out of the guitar but brings music to the guitar. The Mompou suite at the end is just one example of the music Segovia brought to the guitar. The Goss work is one of David's examples. But also his transcriptions. The Bach pieces were magical though we’re heard them many, many times. He had those remarkable pieces by Saint-Luc, a lutenist I’d never heard of. I also loved the images and stories about the medieval churches. David is so much more than a guitar player.
THANK YOU David for showing real potential of the guitar to evoke the sounds of the lute when used with a capo as a transposing instrument! Wonderful exposition of what the guitar is capable of doing in the hands of a master.
David Russell is just the best guitar master, with one of the best sound in the world. And this concert is a real eargasm. Been listening to him for almost 20 years... and it's still as beautiful as the first time I heard him play.
Wow! Fenomenal.
Thank you so much David. I listen to your beautiful renditions as I write. Your presentation is so clear and exude so much soul. As others, I am grateful you have taken the time and put forth the great effort to produce these amazing videos. I am sure they will be enjoyed for many generations!
Increïble i irrepetible. Gràcies Mestre.
Wow, that was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen - and as you know, I’ve seen a lot. Everything perfect: music, performance, venue, video, sound… congratulations to both of you.
Wow! What a wonderful set of concerts by David. Everything brilliant, as always, but I particularly enjoyed Stehen Goss's set of pieces, capturing some essences of Spanish traditional melodies, but carefully encapsulated in a beautiful modern casing. Thank you Stephen and thank you David.
Yes, do support the Omni Foundation to show your gratitude. When I heard his 4th Lute Suite I said _OMFG where is my wallet!?_ and donated immediately.
Extraordinario.
You know what's also really gratifying: reading comments in different languages. True, mostly Western European languages, but still, it is satisfying to see how this marvelous music-making speaks to everyone in the common language known as music.
Beautiful interpretation of beautiful music played in the most beautifully ornate and musical surroundings. Fantastic. Thank you, David Russell and all who worked on bringing us this music.

Just like the parable of the talents, you popped out to the garden and dug them up again, lucky you, see my comment above 😊
As a decent classical guitarist I would highly recommend to stay away from Bach you need at least 4-5 years of solid experience before you touch Bach I mean u can play basic Bach stuff but pieces which David Russell plays you will go mad just trying to figure them out and playing them would be the harder part
GRACIAS ❤
Good. Don't be discourage and trust God.
Interesting story. Why did you quit playing guitar after investing in formal studies through graduate school? You were obviously very serious about your craft. And I am most curious about your statement, "never wishing for it to enter my life ever again."
I have just discovered classical music at 26years old and my mission now is to keep classical alive for the rest of my life. Thanks David Russell 🤩
You couldn't have found a better classical guitarist and lovely man....enjoy!
Cool man! You'll be greatly rewarded!
I just saw your post from a year ago. And I wish you a long life and filled with the beauty of Music which you've discovered a year ago I am 75 years old and have love music for the greater part of my adult life. I've been blessed by music of beauty, and I wish you the same and more.
Once you get into classical music you wonder why you ever listened to anything else.
Whoever those 40 down thumbs were, not my friends. This is wonderful! Thank you David! Bravo!
This must be what Heaven sounds like....
Yes ... listening to this is certainly my heaven on earth 🙏
Fluency, politeness, interpretation and style fidelity. These are some of the features found in this presentation. A gift from God. Thanks a lot, David Russel!
And humility, clarity, refinement. Thank you, David Russell, your performances are the highest standard of music performance. ❤❤

David Russell is in a class by himself!
Wow, that was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen - and as you know, I’ve seen a lot. Everything perfect: music, performance, venue, video, sound… congratulations to both of you.
David Russell, Thank you for bringing us your beautiful interpretations and the history of the churches. I enjoyed.
Absolutely beyond compare. That was just spectacular. How can I "pay for ticket" for this concert? I'm speechless.

Ignorancia probablemente. Maravillosas interpretaciones. Gracias por el concierto. 🎵🎵🎵💯💯💯🌷🌷🌷
Everything about this is amazing! Thanks to David and Omni Foundation for this. I enjoyed it so much.
Thanks for watching!
@@OmniFoundation We pay for most things in life. There has got to be a place where we can contribute to the artist's work.
Extraordinario.

Two of my favorite Bach pieces! Had tears in my eyes hearing them played with such technical mastery and musicianship.
One day I was listening one of his cds and I thought I was listening to Piano concert. He is so good
amazing David
You know what's also really gratifying: reading comments in different languages. True, mostly Western European languages, but still, it is satisfying to see how this marvelous music-making speaks to everyone in the common language known as music.
Thank you for your music and I support you.
Beautiful performances in beautiful places. Thank you for sharing your music and these sights.
