THE GREAT ESCAPE. Farouk gallops off by himself. What a shock! He runs onto the main road.

  • Part 6/6. All our horses are insured for "Public Liability" which means if they cause any injury or damage to another person or persons we are covered up to £2.5 million. You just never know. A Poem by Karen Lugg:
    Farouk said
O thank God I made it home,
I’m exhausted never more to roam
Oh no said Apollo what have you done,
You were supposed to be out having fun.
I got lost said Farouk looking very sad
You didn’t lose Tara did you, that would be bad.
Not exactly, we got all the way round
and people said how well I covered the ground
Tell me more said Apollo not believing his ears
How did you get lost, well said Farouk nearly in tears.
We were by the van and I saw these horses trott past,
They were easy to catch, they weren’t very fast.
Tara was changing my bridle you see,
It was easy to get free.
Oh you didn’t run off, what happened next,
Said Apollo looking worried and vexed.
Out onto the road I ran for miles,
A bit like doing speed test trials.
But I got so frightened and lost you see
With all those vehicles coming at me.
My feet were red hot and I started to puff,
I knew that I had had enough.
I couldn’t think straight it was a nightmare,
But suddenly, like magic, Tara was there.
She calmed me down and took such care.
She told me off as we walked back
Said it would be a while before I can hack.
Well said Apollo as head of the herd
I must say what you did was really absurd.
It was a selfish, stupid thing to do,
especially as you don’t wear shoes.
I’m sorry said Farouk looking downcast.
But bloody hell wasn’t I fast.
    🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎

Oh dear, it’s a good thing I did not watch this last night since my daughter is visiting from Indiana. I burst into tears knowing that sinking feeling from the morning I went to do my chores and all 3 were gone. They went across a busy road. Fortunately, a police officer came along where I was walking and she had spotted them. I started running in that direction until the officer said she could drive me there faster! When I approached them praying my heart out Whiskey took off galloping & leading the way home. The officer blocked traffic while they crossed the busy road. We live on a dead end country road with hardly any traffic. All 3 went ran into the paddock then their stalls & hung their heads. Like, why would we leave our home where we are treated better than many children? I saw Divine intervention operating on behalf of Farouk. So grateful your trauma ended well. 💗🤠

My husband once fell off his 17.2 horse in 35,000 acres of forestry commission woodland which was surrounded by busy roads, we lost Badger for 3 hours, the rangers and all our friends came from miles to help us, we feared the worst .... eventually we saw him being lead by a very tiny lady walking her dog, she wasnt "horsey" at all, but apparently Badger had walked up to her as if to say, "can you take me back to my dad please, I'm lost"
The relief and gratitude we felt was overwhelming, I burst into tears xx
Lesson learnt, after that we only rode in pairs in the woods xx

Some of those drivers don’t think when going past horses at a neck braking speed especially that red car & how dangerous it can be for the rider or someone leading a horse/pony along the road.
Teenage Farouk trying to look 👀 innocent 😇 as if to say “What have I have done Mum.”
Farouk definitely had a very big fright after it all back fired on him.

I am soooo glad he is safe!! As you were walking him back, I couldn't help but notice him looking at you--those eyes! He was truly relieved to see you, and knew he was safe. It looked as though his eyes were saying, "I'm sorry...please don't be mad at me". "Horse people" are a different breed of folks...I believe everyone that witnessed this knows it could have easily been them, and they just jumped in to help!

OMG........I have never felt physically and mentally traumatised by a video before, but when he broke away and took off, I literally turned cold with fear. The only other time I have reacted like that was when my 5 year old niece walked away from my side in a large supermarket, the fear that hits when you realise they're not under your protection is heart-stopping!, my reaction was instant tears and a mad dash up and down the isles in total panic. Can I just say that I admire your ability to hide the terror and outwardly remain calm and with supreme level thinking begin the search.
Thank the stars he didn't hurt himself or collide with traffic!. I can tell you that like Farouk, my niece became extra careful to stay by my side, The shock of getting lost and the feeling of safety on seeing a familiar face is often a lesson well learnt...hopefully, lol. I am just so glad my adopted horse-nephew is safe and sound. (it's ok, don't worry, I won't be demanding visitation right, lolol). Your three horses are such a joy to watch and see them mature and enjoy life, and I thank you for allowing us all to be a part of their lives.

Well... obviously "someone or something" was watching over Farouk and yourself Tara. My heart is still in my throat, I can just imagine what you were feeling. I live on a very busy state highway (why riding has become more and more difficult over the years) and I've had similar situations happen on two different occasions. Once I was still on the horse when he bolted and went straight for the highway because a curb chain broke and freaked him out, but thankfully that ended well. The second was when I was still a child, it was my heart horse...a jet black Rocky Mount. that ended in tragedy that I still can't talk about to this day without crying. In short I know that sickening feeling you must've had in the pit of your stomach and there's no words for it! I'm so glad Farouk is safe and all is well ❣️ Hopefully Farouk learned a very valuable lesson 🙈🙉🙊 many hugs 🖤💜🧡🌸

Goodness me Tara, my heart was in my mouth the whole time. This, unfortunately, is a regular occurrence for my cob 😢. We don’t go on pleasure rides etc but can happen coming out of the stable, putting tack on, taking tack off, coming out of the field (onto a road). He’s 20 years old and has gotten into a terrible habit. I’ve has him 4 years now and it’s becoming less regular. He did it last weekend for the first time in 12 months. Right onto the road 😬 it’s awful isn’t it!

He is such a lucky boy! This happened to a friend of mine and we gave chase in our horse. He too was an arab and ran for miles crossing many junctions the most frightening thing was that the owner’s 6 year old child was on board at the time!! How both horse and child made it through I will never know but they did. When they go they just go and nothing will stop them! Poor Feruk he frightened himself but glad no long term affects.

I think you were also very lucky that no people were injured from a car accident from him running through the streets. When we go to any event, the gates are always closed. Even when there is open field riding like where you were, the floating area is enclosed & on the off chance it's not (only ever once), always put the halter on before you take off the bridle. Safer for you & safer for the horse. So glad this worked out with no injuries to anyone involved 😮‍💨🙂

this is the reason i never ever ever take a bridle of outside! always in the trailer or truck or stable indoors! When i went out riding i would put the bridle on in the trailer , and when i was done , put them in the trailer and chance the bridle into halter! never in my whole life will i ever do this ! i had a mare that spooked like this all the time on the parking . i would always take the lunge , bridle her and take her down the trailer . now i have a stallion and he gets always a bridle on when he goes outside with a lungeline on it! i have had several things like this happened when i was younger , but i am older now and way more carefull! thank god he is ok , everybody else is ok and you two can continue you're story !!

Holy Carp!! Farouk!! He is so so so lucky to not have fallen, slipped, tripped or been hit by a car, someone was looking out for him and a lost bridle is a heck of a small price to pay to what could have happened. I'd almost be tempted to either wear the a rope halter under the bridle or not take the bridle off until he was in the van. I dont know how you stayed so calm, I would have been a blethering eejit. Lucky Farouk for sure. I'm sat at my computer and I feel shocked. Well done to the lady who followed him in the van and the guy who took you out to follow him as well. Farouk did look very relieved to be caught. For sure the Prophet for looking out for his horse.

You're right, Tara. He was being a bit naughty, but once he was off, the bridle spooked him. He is SOOOOO lucky. I get choked up at the part when you find him. He ran so far and just thinking about what could have happened 😓 Bless all the people who helped you ❤️ I would have been beside myself not knowing which direction he'd gone or if he ducked into somewhere.
After watching the event, which was a nice pace, it's amazing the speed and stamina he had to run off so far down the road! Oh Farouk, I know your mum is glad to have you home safe and sound, as are the rest of your virtual family ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Well Tara, that was the classic “bolt” Farouk bolted! Thank God that woman happened to be on the scene she kept him in place because he was going to run away again. Her experience with horses and keeping her arms out helped to keep him in place and he thought twice about dodging her. I agree with you that he panicked once he realized he was lost. Maybe that’s why he seems to be closer and hanging on to you more. Luckily he avoided a serious injury because the way those people drive anything is possible. You were amazing keeping your wits about you, tracked him down quickly and saved his behind! An exciting day to say the least. Bet you slept well that evening, lol!

sigh, well said. That woman knew her business. How to stop him and turn him around without making him feel trapped. "hey bud, this is my patch of the pavement and you need to go back the way you've came, beat it" Fortunately, he did not challenge her apparent dominance. I don't think he realized Tara was there until he focused his attention on her and stopped trying to run away.

For us just being told today..we haven't had time to decompress..Farouk is OK Tara is OK It has to be in the back of your mind. I know you will glance at the gate and weigh your options..should something happen. Just as you do when he encounters scary puddle monsters, farm equipment or white sign/flag creatures that want to JUMP out at him and take a bite. I know it's how you keep your seat like you were glued aboard. Amazing balance and anticipation of his every move! He'll have to be a very good lad for years to come to wipe this slate clean. But that is who Farouk is, he is who he is. There is not a mean bone in his body. He is just being true to his ancient bloodline. I guess, we have to accept the not so good characteristics..in order to enjoy his better traits. No different than humans!

What an 'Oh Feck ' momen!. No one was hurt thankfully. x Always happens when you least expect it. Annoying those drivers weren't calmer and slower on your walk back they think horses can't change mood in a blink.

So scary, so glad you got him back safely and without causing an RTC.
The gate at the entrance to the box & trailer parking field should have been shut and if people needed access in & out they should have a steward gatekeeper.
The various events, hunter trials fun rides etc that I often volunteer at always keep the gate shut. There is always the risk of a loose horse.

Heartfelt thanks to the man who drove you, and to the lady and the man who drove her, and the other drivers who were alert and careful, managing not to hit our Faroukles. You had to be calm to fetch him but I expect you had a reaction once he was safely in the box. Hugs.
