I'm using the village of hommlet module as a jumping off point in my custom setting, this is a great solution for taking old, well done maps, and making them your own. I love having all maps I show the players made by people from the setting (they wont be to scale or perfect, but they say a lot about what's important to folks)
Great map. That must have been a fair bit of delving into the module to figure out how the village was, pre-module. Love the artistic style. Also, great use of plexiglass to grid and save the map!
Thanks, David. As kids we grew up with the classic AD&D modules in 77-80. Hommlet was always the perfect rurak village. For this series, I dug through the NPCs and removed the St Cuthbert structures abd families/businesses listed as "recently arrived" I'd love to wrap this side project up sometime, but COVID-19 has forced a shift in priorities for sure!
> Slaves You know who works tirelessly and (virtually never) rebels or gets disgruntled or engages in work slowdowns or subtle sabotage? Undead, that's what. Skellies, zombies, or even higher undead with a bit more (even if dim) intelligence.
Zombies and skeletons can only follow one order at a time, of a dozen or so words, issued by their creator. They need constant supervision and micro management by their creator. They can't procreate to replenish their numbers, and they don't heal when they inevitably hurt themselves on the job. They might be good if you've got a bunch of already dead bodies and don't mind investing your own time into the project, but they're just a worse investment than living bodies, in my opinion.
> A crappy #2 pencil. Back in the day when I was drawing maps and dungeons I switched to mechanical pencils. At first .7 but soon after .5mm. It keeps a fine point much easier, I find. I know some people don't like them because the tip can break or the like, but once I managed the pressure right it has always worked for me much better than a standard pencil. Part of that though is because I'm not very dexterous "naturally," so having a pencil tip that quickly becomes fatter made and makes my stuff look bad. But I can do nice lines with a mechanical pencil, and then go over them with a sharpie ("ultra fine point"). Also I started getting pads of 10 square per inch graph blue-line paper back in the day. Magnificent stuff.
Personally I would probably use simple scotch tape instead of masking tape, and fold over one end of each strip. I find it's easier to peel off without guaranteeing damage. Not perfect by any means. (Not trying to sound like one of "those guys," just sharing my own methods).
Mana man are you saying you're Myalgic Encephalomyelitis? Have you tried just reading the CC? Let me know if I can help in some way? All the video does is talk through my approach to designing and drawing The Village of Hommlet map from scratch, capturing the time before the Battle of Emridy Meadows at the height of the Temple of Elemental Evil’s power. Not sure if that helps?
