What a nice set of Austen books! I didn't read all the way through Mansfield Park yet. I got distracted by Les Misérables, but I haven't given up on Mansfield Park. Emma was the first Austen book I read. At first I didn't like Emma (the girl) but she got better by the end of the novel. I read Persuasion and remember very little of it. Remind me please! I was very impressed by Pride & Prejudice and thought it should be assigned reading in every high school. Also I liked Sense & Sensibility. That leaves me with just Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey to read.
Yes I was pleasantly surprised when this Austen set arrived as it was inexpensive. I enjoyed Northanger Abbey and thought that Austen’s observation of toxic friendships was spot on, especially having written it at such a young age. Will be interested to see what you think of Mansfield Park. So far i am really really enjoying Persuasion. I love Anne Elliot’s character already. Will do a review when finished.
I love Jane Austen! I think both S&S and Mansfield Park are very Christian novels. Persuasion is more autumnal in mood and really romantic! Good pick! Emma is my least favorite but of course it is still great. But like Linda I found Emma herself annoying and there were a couple aspects of the plot that didn’t work for me.
That’s so interesting that Persuasion is Autumnal in feel. I’m even more looking forward to it. I’ve started it and loving it so far. Love Anne’s character already. Hope to read the set over the next while and do reviews as I go.
Emma seems the most complex. Persuasion has more wonder and awe about the great outdoors. Austen loved to go outdoors and wander herself. Mansfield Park is the most emotional because Fanny Price has so much to lose, she is always in danger and therefore afraid to say much. Her first two books are the most positive because Jane was young when she wrote them (under 20 years old). Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice. Northanger Abbey is really satire and not quite up to the level of the other 5. But satire can be a whole lot of fun!
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm enjoying Persuasion so far. I was particularly interested in what you said about Mansfield Park as it seems to be the least talked about. It may be my next one. Thanks 😊👍
