Great introduction overview! The university, at which I study, we have two rooms with a WFS system, with one of them being in active use. It's a really interesting technology with a lot of potential in my opinion, but to properly design, setup and maintenan it seems a really really challenging task. Our acoustics/electronics professor is currently focusing his research on that, and we are even planning to expand the system with an ambisonics dome/sphere-like array, to create a hybrid sound system of sorts, combining the best of both approaches. Quite difficult to implement all of that, especially with just one PC running the whole system, but super interesting nonetheless. 🙂
