      Well.. here we go again:
Most pirate's have but one good leg, and Heidi she has two.
The newest member of the ship, is Bonnie will be true.
She walks about on all four legs, on land, and on the sea.
And Heidi has saved her life, from humans and the fleas.
I'd bet that she now likes her life, it's going to be a breeze.
I thank the captain of that ship, may she sail the seven seas.

Good Nz morning Heidi. As a retired sheep farmer, and having to train sheep dogs, one has to be firm. Later on as a salty liveaboard, I took possession of an 8 week old fox terrier, who was very intelligent. In your case you as the owner have to be firm. Just say NO. In a commanding voice. And no they won't hate your guts. Like young humans they have to learn where their boundaries are. Every time she barks at a dog, as you say no, just give her lead a tug to strengthen the command. Do not be afraid of the dog. You Heidi are the Alpha female. You are the matriarch. Bonnie has to respect you. Just do it. I shall watch and wait with interest. Keep chugging on. Thank you for sharing. Until next time, take care. Atb from down under.

Be stern with a deep voice. The mother disciplines her pups with growls. I found that’s a good attention-getter for dogs. It’s something they understand. Higher voices when they’re good…lower when they’re not. It worked on our dachshund!

OK--here's my experience with a reactive, rescued dog. Fear aggressive of ALL dogs--a nightmare on walks, until...I hired a dog trainer for an afternoon, who had her extremely well-trained BIG dog with her. That dog didn't react to my Isla in any way, just stayed calm. (Also learned how to hold a leash LOL) Problem solved from then on. Like magic. Thank you for taking such good care with dear Bonny. You will get there. Bless.

As some guy on the Internet, I’d take this with a pinch of salt. When we were training our dog he was aggressive af with larger dogs only when on a leash. The trouble with that is finding out the hard way that’s not the issue. We tried him off with a friends dog and he got loads better. She’s landed lucky with her new life though, looks well happy 👍

You are exactly right when you said Bonny is being protective. Her coming out of her shell is a good thing and being female she feels that she needs to protect the pack. She will settle down when she understands there’s no threat. She still needs more time to adjust to her new environment and you are treating her so good. Don’t be afraid to talk to her sternly when her behavior warrants it. You have to let her know you’re the leader of the pack. Still love the way you maintain your boat. 🐶

Heidi hello from Australia. When I was a new dog owner I was given a really good tip about dealing with nervous dogs facing a larger dog. It was the owner should get in front of their dog and make themselves big thus telling their dog they were in charge. Then if the larger dog actually approached you could shepherd them away without raising the temperature. Remember that as Bonnie is on a lead she cannot run away which can increase her nervousness.. Hi Heidi, I am Zip from Hagersville Ontario Canada and we talked about Tom and I know exactly where you are coming from. But I was not fim enough with Tom and with him 135 pounds for the past two years, he is two now. It would have been better for him and me if I had been more firm with him and loves me doesn't hold it against me I have to be firm with him. Just like a child, in fact all of us we have to know boundaries, so does dear sweet Bonny. And I totally agree she is of the mind set with big dogs I will get you before you get me ,fear. What you could do is sit with Bonny from a very comfortable distance from a big dog and talk to her play with her. She will still be aware the big dog is there but by interacting normally with her, she may become a more comfortable. And you doing amazing job raising your fur baby. Zip from Hagersville Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. Sorry it was so long. I just wanted to help if I could

@TheNarrowboatPirate Maybe when are on the narrow pathways and you see a big dog, slowly and gently scoop her up and tell that is safe so doesn't need to be scared and just walk by the big dog and say hi to the owners of the dog. It is just what will work Bonny .I hope that best for Bonny and I totally agree with seeing a behavioral specialist and can't wait for their input.

Heidi, you are wonderful. I love your channel. I own the male version of Bonny, and I’m here to tell you that leash aggression is quintessential French Bulldog behaviour. My little man is Adolf Hitler when he’s behind a fence or if there is any tension on his leash. When neither of these restraints exist, he’s a proper little gentleman. I suggest 2 things, but know first that she’s not really aggressive, it’s just fun to start shit. The hardest part of this exercise is controlling yourself. If you are tense, she will know😊
    1. Find a nice old big dog and with its owners consent,
2 Let her approach on her retractable leash with ZERO tension on her leash.
All will be well. She is beautiful, as are you.

Really enjoyed watching your progress with Bonnie, Heidi. I adopted my own Bulgarian Rescue, Chip, 7 weeks ago and we’ve had similar experiences of fear aggression developing with larger dogs. Hd my first session with my behaviourist last week, who quickly realised Chip is extremely food motivated and used that to our advantage. Turns out saying his name and shovelling small treats into his mouth is more appealing than barking and lunging at the big dogs! Anyway, I’m sure your behaviourist will figure out the best route for Bonnie, but both me and Chip are watching on and rooting for you!👍

    Aww, lovely Bonnie.
When we adopted our Spud (half pug/half potato) he used to have a go at everything. My partner would fret and gather him up on the lead and get stressed and consequently Spud was worse. I have a well socialised Jack Russell and that helped a bit but luckily I have a dog walker friend and she has 5 bombproof dogs so we took them & Spud out and just stood and chatted for an hour. After a while when Spud was bored sh*less we let him off lead quietly and that helped massively and they just had a bum sniff (the dogs, not my mate 😉) and all was fine. When we met other dogs we distracted him with ball/treats and after a few weeks he was 99% cured. Now he’s relaxed, my other half is relaxed and it’s not a chore taking him out.
    Good luck. 😊

Hi Heidi, I have a Labrador, 2 years old. She’s so loving and joyful but she became dog challenging in the last few months. I tried all sorts but eventually resorted to a professional dog trainer. She was amazing and made a big difference. I watched you tube videos and read books but seeing it in action worked well, a lot of it was around the way I worked with her. She is fear reactive and not a very confident dog. Bonny is beautiful. I was the same. I want my Poppy to love life to the full too. She is getting happier and you can see the difference. Love your videos, we bought a little narrowboat too, you were one of the inspirational you tubers. Xx

Very much enjoyed the video, thanks! So glad the GoPro survived its dunking. I'm also glad you're going to see a behaviorist for Bonnie. My corgi boy Trav went nuts over big dogs. I think it was him protecting his girls (me and corgi Emma). I tried different things over the years, but nothing ever helped. I hope you can overcome! One thing I might suggest, kindly, is trimming Bonnie's toenails. They do look long. When they're long they can cause the feet to splay when walking which can lead to tendon and ligament issues. If you're not comfy doing it yourself, you can have a Vet do it. Just don't cut the quick! They never forget. Ask me how I know...

My dog, who just wants to say hello to every dog he sees 😍, is very fond of treats and when he hears the crackle of the plastic of the typical supermarket treat bag he knows something is afoot. So I used that as an attention getter when I saw another dog approaching and he got his treat if he was a "good boy" passing the other dog and sometimes even if he wasn't. 💡 Obviously this only works with food centred dogs and once they are calm enough not to forget that there may be a treat coming but it may be another tool in the box, if you'll pardon the phrase. 🤣

I have no clue about training dogs. But in the correct spirit of UA-cam, ignorance won't stop me from adding my three hapenth. I heard that pulling back on the lead makes the dog feel vulnerable and scared because they feel that whatever you are pulling them back from is dangerous. Instead check with the other dog owner and if they agree, walk over to the other dog. That I hear lets you dog realize that the other dog is not a threat. I wonder if holding Bonnie back is like someone pulling you away from a conflict. Anyway so nice to see you, Bonnie and your friends living a lovely lifestyle on the water.

Heidi you have to be top dog or the dog takes over. Bonnie may have a bit of fear aggression with bigger dogs, I had a dog with similar problems, a behaviourist advised to use a small metal container put a few marbles in it, so when Bonnie barks rattle the container and it should distract her, when she stops barking reward her. Another method was to have a spray bottle with water and you squirt it on their head, seems crazy but it does help. You need a method to distract Bonnie to focus on you. I'm sure you will master it. 💚

Bonny is not fearful of big dogs, she is protecting you from what she believes could be a threat. A fearful dog will bark and then find protection for themselves. A protective dog will bark and pull forward toward what they believe is a threat - this shows an alpha attitude. Find an owner of a large, well trained, dog and let her slowly interact with the large dog. She will gradually understand that they are not a threat to you or to her.

Hope socialising goes well, my Heidi inspired Rottie is very social, but I, of course, have the opposite problem, people and smaller dogs are scared of him. I just keep him on a short lead and talk calmly to him, keeping him calm helps others. Buster is an oaf and being a large dog at about 19 months is very energetic and excitable, he had no food manners, no recall and the word 'NO' meant bog off dad, he was so bad that he would grab the food out of your hand or off your plate. He now waits for his dinner until Grace (Lab) gets hers, you can eat your dinner without fear that the next fork full is going to disappear before it reaches your mouth, leave a sandwich unattended while you go for a wee, and he has really good recall now, been hard work the last 4 weeks but worth it.

Just like a pet parent to arrange play dates for their "kids" --- ... she is definitely coming along bit by bit. She will calm even more as her body adjusts to being spayed and I know that you are not going to be an indulgent pet parent who tolerates misbehavior. You do have to be firm with Bonnie - establish control from the start and that will actually help Bonnie know that you will protect her and she is safe. You don't really know her past and she is still working on knowing you, gaining more and more trust in you, and learning where the boundaries lie. She is VERY smart so, like any really smart kid she is going to test the waters and challenge you a bit here and there to see where the boundaries lie. Thanks for saving a space on board for me this week ... I will definitely be hanging out with the two of you next Thursday. Argggggg!!!

Took her to a behaviorist ... two things she said ... one, when I first come into the home, I let the dog lick my face which means I'm the alpha ... two, do NOT give her treats until she makes eye contact which also means I am the alpha. Other stuff too, including what you said about we humans need to learn how to talk dog, and act dog, since we may be part of the problem. I'm still behind in your vlogs. I'll catch up! :-) Woof!

I have a little chihuahua called Chico he barks at any unfamiliar face or animal. He does this because he is frightened so I'm sure he does this hoping they will back off thinking he's a big lion and not a tiny dog. I calmly say "Chico they're friends" I've repeated this so much he now stops barking much quicker. It's not stopped the problem but by me calmly saying "Chico they're friends" he quietens down much quicker. I'm hoping one day he won't be as frightened and won't bark but as long as my calming command helps stop him worrying and it stops him barking I see this as progress. Good luck, she's a little darling and I'm sure she and you will be just fine x

@@TheNarrowboatPirate it's so easy to pick them up isn't it, we'd do that with a child and because we love them. I think some professional advice would be good but in the meantime keep trying to let her see your close by and she's safe and give extra praise when she is calmer but continue to install in her that what she's currently barking at isn't there to hurt her. What we have to be aware of is they don't think everyone are friends, hopefully no one ever attempts to get aboard your boat uninvited and in that instance you'd want her to bark and act accordingly. Keep doing what you're doing give her reassurance on the towpath and with professional advice on dog training hopefully I can learn more from you 😍 good luck Heidi and I'm so glad you're both enjoying life together.

Hi Heidi and Bonnie, I think you're doing an absolutely fantastic job with Bonnie! I would suggest that when you're on the towpath with Chico, let Bonnie off the lead too. I know you think that she may suddenly encounter a big(ger) dog but if she's off the lead she's more likely to copy Chico's reaction than feel the need to defend you (because she's on the lead) If you notice in the final clip of Bonnie on the lead by the bridge, barking at that big black retriever, the retriever wasn't on a lead and completely ignored Bonnie and if Bonnie wasn't either I don't think there would have been a standoff from Bonnie (Ooh argh! ☠️) I think you're scared of Bonnie being by big dogs, which Bonnie picks up on, not Bonnie, which is perfectly understandable because you love her so much😘🐕 If you choose to keep her on the lead in these situations, try Caesar Milan's method of giving her a treat of three, not all at once, as a distraction and keep doing this until her reactivity subsides. You and Bonnie really are doing remarkably well in such a short period of time! Keep up the fantastic work! Don't get despondent! Hope this helps.

Thank you, great advice here 😄 I do use treats a lot as a distraction … I am letting her off her lead more and more however she does leg it to big dogs and head butts them and barks in their face 😂😂 I’m scare one is going to turn round and attack her one day … hopefully the behaviourist will help too but the treats definitely keep her distracted 😄🏴‍☠️❤️

I'm sure you've gotten tons of advice - but here's mine! I think you are 100% right that it is fear aggression as Bonnie doesn't do the same with small dogs. First, I'd really like to see you get rid of the retractable leash. When Bonnie is pulling forward and barking the only thing pulling back does is encourage her to pull harder. Short sharp jerks are much better. This gives Bonnie the opportunity to respond. It becomes her choice. As soon as she turns her head or hopefully comes back to you, reward, reward, reward. To stop the barking, the Positive Reward approach is to redirect. Ideally, I'd like to see you turn your back on the large dog, showing Bonnie there is nothing to worry about. Redirect her by, and here is where basic obedience is so important, getting her to sit, down, shake hands or whatever you have trained her to do. Reward her with a treat or praise or whatever you normally do as a reward. Repeat every time she reacts to a large dog (or anything else threatening. She'll soon learn to turn to you for reassurance rather than barking. You are already doing the right thing by socializing her as much as possible. Just keep in mind that dogs aren't great at generalizing and getting her OK with one large dog doesn't mean she'll be good with all large dogs. I'd find a non-reactive large dog to work with. I'd volunteer mine but we're on the Ashby at the moment. Have the big dog sit or preferably down and with a loose leash (did I mention I don't like retractable leashes?) walk Bonnie towards the large dog. Let her set the pace and determine how close she comes. Reward her steadily while approaching the large dog. Gee, this is good! I get treats every time I see a large dog! Patience, loose leash and don't force her and you'll come out good in the end. Did that sound rude? Don't be rude! :)

Hey Heidi, I know what you mean when it comes to lubing your box 😊. My lady June's engine is even older than yours. It has to be hand cranked to start it. Her boats engine was made in 1913 and has two cylinders. It's such a simple engine but it runs well and sounds lovely.

@@TheNarrowboatPirate June's is water cooled but it's an old motor. Her narrowboat has a wooden hull too. It's a really old boat but it's lovely. It used to be horse drawn until 1913 when it got its new fangled diesel engine. It was a two year job to restore the boat to a livable state. June bought it as a sail away and her dad helped with the renovations and restoration. It's named 'Whole in the Water'.

Have you ever thought about using a car camera set up on the front of your boat ? That would give you a clear view out front of the boat for a 12V hook up.and a length of wire. handy for those long bends.

I don’t know anyone who has one to be honest … not sure if I could wire up as my boat is 57 foot long - much longer than a car so I know the wireless ones wouldn’t work 🤔 and i don’t want a big long wire running all around the inside of the walls

Another great vlog. I am surprised that the Stones has lasted so long (mind you, it is really a winter mixer). If you want to get any more the shop 'Savers' usually has it at the lowest price. Glad to see Bonny is coming on so well. Mum gets lamb bones from a friendly butcher to keep Boy's teeth clean. Last time I saw her I got a bag for £1. A lot cheaper than Dentastix, and you know what is in them (lamb bone!). For Bonny I would ask the butcher to cut them down to the size of a large new potato.
I have found out the gatehouse at Tixall was used as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots in 1586 (according to Wikipedia). It is a lovely part of the world, and I have photos when Mum, Jay and I were there on an early morning, with gentle wisps of mist on the water.
