  • This race was the first of the American 1975 125cc and 250cc motocross season. Weather brought in rain, snow, and sleet. The creeks crossing the racetrack overflowed and swamped sections of the track. Quickly covered in mud, racers had to be identified by make of bike, style, and jersey number. Enjoy!.

I ran the 125 Amature race the day before the Nationals. That was the muddiest race I ever raced in my MX career. But it sure was fun! Thank you for the memories.

A friend raced the day before, and I tried to take pictures. Rain, wind, creeks crossing the track, and lots of 2-3 foot deep 'puddles' on the track. Spectators were even telling riders the best line to take, which, of course, always led to a deep, flooded hole.

Thanks for posting the video. Somewhere in the dirt in Plymouth is a lone size 13 shoe. Mine got sucked off my foot in the mud and by the time I noticed it was too late. Spent the rest of the day walking around with one shoe and a sock, which you couldn't see anyways. One of the best days of my life. I was 18 at the time.

Hello, I was trying to find the Hangtown race I went to as a kid. I believe this is the one. Can you tell me if any other races in the 70's were as muddy like this one? I remember the mud pit at bottom, was that at more than this one? And where exactly was this at, is what I'm looking for. I seem to remember the track being really close to the highway and going higher up the hill, I was a little kid though. Thanks, excuse so many questions. Been over 45 years and I still haven't found that location.

Awesome video for the time! I really enjoyed it! Not many people had video cameras around that time. I was 11yrs old at this time racing in the 0-100cc class in Western NY & Western PA. Brings back great memories! Truly special & thanks.

This footage was shot with a friend's borrowed Super8 film camera. Each reel of film was only 3 minutes long. I was really trying to get some flow in the footage, and not end up with short, choppy clips. I think that it turned out pretty good. Glad you enjoyed the footage.

Wow! I heard about this race - AWESOME VIDEO!!! I was there in 1976 and 1977 and the weather was much better for sure! - In this video you see a a few MX legends - Tim Hart won and it was the only race that year that Marty Smith didn't win. I believe that's Bill Unga (RIP) DDNMC Member and HANGTOWN track official at the first turn holding the flag and smoking a cigarette - Thanks for the video!

Thanks for watching the video. The track was fairly dry compared to the amateur race, which was held the day before. I heard that Kent Howerton was listening in on some fans talk about who was going to win the 250 national. His name wasn't even mentioned. Kinda pissed him off, so he went out and won the race. Be sure to let the other Dirt Diggers you know about this video(s).

I raced Open Intermediate the day before, they changed the course for the pro day we had more deep water. The video says Qualifying race, not true there were two motos for each class. Danny Turner, NorCal won the first 125 pro moto on a Bultaco. The second moto his pit crew left a rag in the carb and the bike wouldn't start for moto 2. Amateur day had rain sleet and snow. Everything turned white except the track which looked like a river, it was surreal.

It doesn't look like the same location as the natonal race they run now days. Was the wet weather a freak event? Usually it seems like Hangtown is a dust bowl, but again I only have watched the televised races - I'm in Tennessee.

    • @markrothschild2618

The old Hangtown track didn't have the big uphill that Farleigh Castle does. Plenty of mud it did have.,
