    Rio de Janeiro, November 6th, 1817. Today is something Brazil has never seen before, a royal wedding! Prince Pedro I, son of John VI, has just met his wife, the Austrian archduchess
    Maria Leopoldina. Who is clever, sincere, and has prepared herself for this new world.
    Learning her seventh language, Portuguese, and bringing with her a collection of interesting plants and minerals to introduce to Brazil. However, this marks the beginning of a struggle between the ruling powers of Portugal and the budding new independence of Brazil.

    • @ultramang55

      It's sad to think that but the slavery was an economic issue, not a moral or ideological one. The USA could end the slavery before Brazil just because the north had an industrial economy that didn't need slavery anymore, if Brazil economy was not so rural centered the slavery could have ended early, but 1825 it's very unrealistic, if Pedro I insisted on that issue, Brazil would simply become a republic way earlier.

    • @kauz33
      @kauz33 2 роки тому +22

      @P4to D0l4n during the Oriental Revolution (1811-1820) the Portuguese invaded the "Banda Oriental" (now Uruguay and part of Rio Grande do Sul) in 1816 and anexing the territory as the Cisplatina Province. This is known as the Luso-Brazilian invasion. In 1825 the "Therty-three Easterners" crossed the Uruguay river and declared independence, and in 1828 a deal was signed, fostered by British diplomat Lord Ponsonby with the Empire of Brazil and the United Provinces (now Argentina) recognizing the independence of the new Eastern State of Uruguay. Britain was keen on having a buffer state between the to in order to stop them fighting and provide stability for the region, wich is good for commerce.

    • @leandrobalino475

      @P4to D0l4n but that's 40 years later, I think it's pretty clear the "end" in this case means the end of the fights for the control over the Banda Oriental. Not saying Britain didn't have anything to do with Triple Alliance War as it's known here tho, they had a hand in pretty much everything that happened in the region in this time period.

    Pedro I (or 4th as he is called in Portugal) is a very interesting character. Emperor in Brazil, King in Portugal, his 2 kids would inherit the crowns, making the house of Braganza still in control of both countries. He defeated the Portuguese in Brazil (and was on position to almost bomb Lisbon if independence was not accepted), then defeated the Portuguese again when fighting against his brother. On the same period the crown of Spain and Greece were offered to him. I hope there will be a chapter for him after he left Brazil and in the independence war talking about Thomas Cochrane, hero of the independency in some part of Brazil and cursed by an ex-president (calling him a pirate when visiting his tomb).
