  • In our multicultural, multiracial and multi-religious society, how much do we really know about one another’s faiths? Herald Chia was raised Catholic until the death of his grandmother while he was studying in Australia. He turned atheist and later, was ready to give up a budding relationship with a girl he liked because she was Muslim. He questioned Islamic religious teachers with philosophy and logic, even tested God using a bible and Quran. In this episode, Joanne chats with Muslim revert Ferdaus Chia to learn more about his spiritual journey and our misconceptions about Islam.

    To Joanne Peh,
So many religions in the world and every religious people claim that their faith is the truth and the right path. We know people are not perfect so we cant be sure of their knowledge and intentions. The best way to find out is to put aside all opinions and read all the scriptures on your own then decide. So far I have done that. All the religious scriptures have errors in their translation (especially translations from translated text over centuries) or are changed by humans. The only scripture that stood the test of time and unchanged at all is the Quran in the classical Arabic language. The rhyme and eloquence in that language is unmatched and there is not a single error and everything is so clear and modern science have proven the Quran to be correct and there is no error in the 1400 years old scripture. Your life answers will be answered in that book. Every machine we buy, there is a manual on how to operate. The Quran is the manual of humans and the world we live in. Please take some time and give it a shot. You will be amazed how it answers you and move you to tears like no other book.
    May peace be with you.
    Sincerely,
A random Singaporean Chinese Muslim convert

Just realised a better answer to the question - “Can we have a purpose without God?”
My answer to that is, yes we can, but it would be a purpose that is more self-fulfilling than one that encompasses the entire world. If we believe in a world where each of us are interconnected then that purpose has to be greater than what we think we know. We then need to rely on divine guidance. ☺️✌🏻

As Socrates said, wisest is he who knows he does not know, so can I say how wise are you when you asked the question, “What do I know about Islam?” Wise is she who doth not know indeed! MasyaAllah. I am born Muslim but I never fail to be inspired by reverts, in particular Brother Ferdaus. Very humbling that I don’t know as much about my religion as he does. How many of us can quote the Quran on the condition of marrying 4. Not all Muslim men know this. He always hits a nerve or soft spot with his questions and answers and thank you Joanne Peh for taking an interest enough to ask him these difficult questions, answered with such finesse and sincerity. I have enjoyed your conversation greatly. The question on what would you feel or do if your children were to choose a different path from you is also very powerful and moving. I hope you have been illuminated by his answer as I have.
My hopes: may you find hidayah or guidance in Islam as we call it. May all our children be given this taufeeq and hidayah as Brother Ferdaus has been given. Aamiin🤲🏻

Thank you Joanne for this sharing. It's been a long time coming from ppl like you. I like it that there's a genuine interest and respectful conversation between the two of you. When Herald/Firdaus shares his philosophical thoughts, I think that's where most feel challenged also.
There is only strength and beauty in diversity just as long as we are respectful of one another and we understand that we are essentially the same, that is -spiritual beings. Each of us deserves peace, qn is, who's willing to give it more?

Nice conversation. It was very tamed. Joanne..dont be shy asking the tough questions.
What i notice is that when you are a pragmatic person and the truth is presented with evidence, u might not "like" it but it makes sense and accept it. That is being open minded

I pray to Allah SWT may Joanne accept Islam. I think she just wants to know more about religions especially Islam. She's a smart woman and I hope she'll make her choice that she's comfortable with. Insyallah. 🤲

Interesting topic. And i agree we need a symposium of sort for us to understand each other. Cos i think it is more offensive that we try hard not to offend each other by not talking to one another about each other and assume we know enough just from a distant (while we live so closely in the same tiny island), than to actually express our ignorant and curiosity to know about the other. And I think you did very well here Joanne.
There's alot that i probably still need to learn bout your community despite being surrounded by many of you. Knowing some of negative perceptions some may hold, made me slightly reclusive than i would love to, forming the biases that say "how come some these civilizations came here from somewhere flocking in bunch to this place, but hardly ever learn about the actual culture and value and even language of this place despite settling here almost a century and knowing us so little yet are so arrogant want to impose theirs on ours thinking very insignificantly about us?".
Though I understand individually it's just the product of limited exposure to deeper connection and understanding about each other's value and concepts that we form biases. And this kind of topic helps.
And I would be happy to be your friend Joanne (not for your celebrity status but as an awesome individual that I can have meaningful discussion as this with). 😊

    Maybe can ask these question.
    1. Do you think Allah is a good God? If he is Good then there must be a bad side.
    2. What can we do to be forgiven from our sin in life

Allah is Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem (The MOST Gracious The MOST Merciful). there is bad only to complement the good, which you can't appreciate it if there's none.
We are afterall human beings who make mistakes. Make repentance, no matter the number of occurrences. Allah says in the Quran: “Say My slaves who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins) Do not despair of the Mercy of Allah: verily He forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (39:53)

the one topic that we are too scared to discuss is circumcision.
only jewish and muslim men must be circumcised per their religious decree.
we like to say it nicely, its the other halal-kosher meat.

Not sure if it's just me but the interviewer doesn't seem to know about the subject. At least she could read up before doing the interview? And where are her notes... Also seating with legs folded is quite rude when doing interviews.

Aiyooh what is this? She admitted she doesn't know much and would love to know more maa. She did abit of reading but reading can be different from talking to one. And I think she sat that way cos she wants it be as cosy and comfortable as possible becos the topic is going to be a heavy one. I don't feel it's rude to sit like that. Traditionally, the native of wherever this is likely shot at, used to value sitting on the floor with legs crossed like that than to sit on the chair. It shows humility and being humble sitting on the ground as apposed to sitting high up on a chair (like how royalties would). Do abit of research too on this please
