My life journey actually made me walk out of the religion. At work, when I reveal to my colleagues that I’m Malay non-Muslim, there get surprised & find it refreshing. Having grown up in a very stoic Islamic family circle, I can definitely say that the religion influence the ‘Malay Culture’ a lot, because of their deep seated beliefs, especially when one of it is that the religion is the ‘Correct One’. Other than ‘reverts’, there is also a large number of ex-muslims, even those who are born in the Middle East countries & especially those that have studied deeply into Islam, even Imams. The big question is Why. Are Sg muslims open to that? Or are they just willing to accept the beliefs that are spoon fed into them since birth. Most muslims tend to only get to the ‘surface level’. It is too romanticised, bordering on ‘silent poison’. There is a whole deeper truths to prophet Muhammad. The main problem is that the majority of these truths & facts are only discovered when deep research is done, and sadly not from the ‘ustads & ustazahs’. Another thing is ‘circumcision’, I wonder if Herald goes through this. Having it done to me when I was young, it was a traumatising & painful period in my childhood. Looking back, it is child abuse & totally unnecessary. This tradition needs to be halted. I consider this to be one of the ‘virus’ in the religion. I’ll just say this. Why would God keep offering 4skins forever?

Interesting topic. And i agree we need a symposium of sort for us to understand each other. Cos i think it is more offensive that we try hard not to offend each other by not talking to one another about each other and assume we know enough just from a distant (while we live so closely in the same tiny island), than to actually express our ignorant and curiosity to know about the other. And I think you did very well here Joanne. There's alot that i probably still need to learn bout your community despite being surrounded by many of you. Knowing some of negative perceptions some may hold, made me slightly reclusive than i would love to, forming the biases that say "how come some these civilizations came here from somewhere flocking in bunch to this place, but hardly ever learn about the actual culture and value and even language of this place despite settling here almost a century and knowing us so little yet are so arrogant want to impose theirs on ours thinking very insignificantly about us?". Though I understand individually it's just the product of limited exposure to deeper connection and understanding about each other's value and concepts that we form biases. And this kind of topic helps. And I would be happy to be your friend Joanne (not for your celebrity status but as an awesome individual that I can have meaningful discussion as this with). 😊

Can i just clarify that it's also important to distinguish between religions and homosexuality? not all religious people including christians are against policies to help gay people. in fact christianity is not always irreconcilable with homosexuality. Also props to Remy for sharing his personal experiences. Im not gay but I can relate to having one's privacy/sexuality intruded upon by others.
