This makes a lot of sense. I was using psy scope to try and get a perfect kick transient every single time with my base and I didn't know that post EQ would affect the kick bass relationship. I was wondering why my kick transients were never the same and causing the final limiter to work harder than it needed to.
Rly great tutorial... what sometimes works out for me, i put 2 or 3 diffrent lfo shapers in the end of my processing chain. One triggered every 16th note to fade out. Sometimes one over a full bar after that to do some sidechain (not evertime) and at the very end i put one lfo shaper over a full bar and completly cut of the first 16th. I find out that with this method i never find some postfrequenzies collide into my kickdrum. But i rly have to try out this method you showed here

Yes, including in the mastering I avoid filters as much as possible. For something like filter transitions I use linear phase but you have to keep that to a minimum!

I assume you mean W.A. Productions? I'm sorry to say but W.A. Productions is a company which creates sensationalized production content with the least amount of effort. I highly doubt they experimented with this conept before bringing it to their viewers. If they really had done that they would notice that they'd run into phasing issues at the point the transient fades into the note. Also it sounds bad, it makes very little sense musically for a sound to pitch to different notes except the very start of the sound. One of the few cases this technique is applied is in hardstyle when making kicks, as the transient isn't piched in that case. I'd however argue that the traditional hardstyle kick is really a kick (the transient that doesn't pitch) and the bass (the tonal sustain part that does pitch). This means the technique is different from pitching a bass except the transient. I think whoever made the content at W.A. Productions thought they could just apply this technique to any sound. Experiment for yourself and check the results you will get. I swear it will sound worse 99% of the time.

I think he also sells presets etc. but I don't know if they're any good but I agree that WA Production is pretty low quality especially their plugins are trash but I don't think W.A.D is affiliated with WA Production even though they seem to like slapping artists names on their mediocre products to sell them...
I wanted to go over all scenarios & reasons that a bass might not be clean, starting from the very beginning of synthesis. Of course I could have just said to resample & add the fade immediately but that might result in people not knowing what is actually causing the problems.

no adding a sub bass will only introduce phase issues. There is no reason to add a sub bass if the original bass already has a good solid sub, like in this case...
Why don't just use very fast sidechain limiting so the tail of the bass ducks whenever the kick hits? Personally I'm using stock Compressor with inf. ratio & -inf. treshold and EQing out just the transient of the kick there, approx 15kHz HP.
because then you will introduce clicking on the kick transient as the sidechain activates suddenly. instead I like to resample so I can fade out the sound, that way the speaker relaxes before the transient, instead of on the transient...
I think resampling is a good technique but a little outdated...next level would be after resampling import the resulting waveform back in your synth, like vital or phase plant. Another way to clean up your bass without resampling would be putting a LFO Tool at the end of the chain to apply silence when the kick is playing to avoid post ringing.
You can import it into a sampler, which basically is resampling... if you put an LFO tool on the bass each note will still post-ring into the next bass note, hence the reason we resample just a single note
@@Projektor_music im not speaking into a sampler (as a sample) but into a synth (as a wave table), it’s a big difference. As for LFO tool you are right, it eliminate only post ringing after the last bass overlapping the attack of the kick..but you could set it also to do the same on each bass note (just set trigger from incoming note and 16th). The reason why in my workflow I prefer to don’t bounce kick and bass is because I tend to fine tune them while producing the track and so resampling is a process I can only do at the end…while re-synthesize the processed waveform gives me more flexibility to change during the production, and in the same time having a very solid kickbass. Don’t take this as a criticism about your video, but take it to explore new ways to solve the same problem. Another reason why I prefer to don’t resample (or using a sample) especially for the kick is that when you phase align kick and bass, it’s better doing it on the pitch envelope of the kick, rather than changing the phase of the bass (because it changes completely the sound of the bass or you need a phase alignment plug-in)
@@DanRamone81 There are some fundamental differences in the way we make kick and bass. For starters most of my kicks are made that any allignment that has to be done to them is always the same for different kicks. I make all my kicks in seperate projects and in the production, only use kick samples (which I allign beforehand using the high pass filter trick). I make sure on the first 16th note of my bass there is always a downward zero crossing. I then resample the kick so I don't worry about it untill the mixing phase, in which good care is still taken to the phase. But the way I allign the phase for my bassline to the kick actually has nothing to do with the sub of my bass, which I remove completely for the notes of the bass overlapping with my kick. I do this by duplicating the patch & removing the sub through the harmonic editor of serum. Then those notes are essentially alligned with the transient in the zero crossing, due to earlier care taken to the phase of the kick. I actually use a synth resample of a processed waveform like you suggest, but the patch is significantly more complex then any other approach like resampling, as you need to remove essentially all siginificant post ringing from the bass. That patch is explained here: ua-cam.com/video/pkEK64lAReU/v-deo.html Also even if you set LFO tool to the 16th note setting, it will still post ring in the next bass, as the waveform for the bass isn't eliminated, just muted. Once the LFO tool opens the volume again the volume will rise again for the post ringing also...

I also just look the other video, the idea of muting the fundamental of the bass on the first note is working very well as long the Kick is 1/8 long. I don't understand why you say resampling to waveform have to remove post ringing, the processes are made offline, so you import a processed, clean without ringing waveform, you don't need any key following eq since the waveform is already eqed, and you don't need anymore to apply any process that adds ringing after the synth.
@@DanRamone81 the only reason to do that is so that you have the same cleanlyness as resampling, with the same capability as actual resampling. The point of my patch is to have the right amount of versitility & cleanlyness. The EQ is there to help shape the tone of your bass to whatever track your working on. If you include said EQ in the wavetable you loose that customizability, whch you would need if you want to use the bass for multiple tracks, where each bass needs to work for the track you put it in. Or if you only intend on using it in a single track, at that point you're just wasting time not to resample normally as you don't seem have any benefit over normal resampling.

Hello, I do use a lot of external plugins which you might not own. If you buy the full version of the masterclass, both the Ableton and reaper projects will not work properly if some plugins are missing. However for the video material I try to explain everything in a way that is not plugin dependant, whenever possible. So even if you don't own the exact same plugins as me then the explinations should still make sense for you! Hope that helps, Feel free to ask more questions if needed.
I'm curious about pre/post ringing, my bass patch currently induces ringing, my question is does it affect the waveform as a whole? or is it just purely the extra noise that comes before and after the note is played? which is then edited out after being bounced to audio. I too, do run into the problem of it sounding good on speakers but not so great in headphones. The bass sounds so different in phones to a point where I dislike it, though on monitors I love it (I listen turned down low routing the mix so is all going through one speaker put my ear up close to listen the bass sounds fat and solid (Sounds nice blasting as well ;) (through both speakers) the timbre is vastly different is ringing the culprit? because of this issue I trust the monitors more than I do the headphones, am I a fool for doing so? appreciate any thoughts on the matter
First of all pre and post ringing is nothing more than phase shifts & extentions of the frequency being shifted. So that happens everywhere in the waveform equally depending on the filter settings (and assuming the filter to be static). Secondly the sounds of all elements of your tracks will vary from listening environment to listening environment (as we call it in technical terms :) ). The thing to worry about is how it will translate from your listening environment to the listener's environment. I have noticed that monitors are better for seeing how a track will sound on a festival system (obbviously not identical) and headphones are better for systems the listener will most likely use when listening in private (like bluetooth headphones/earplugs or small speakers)
Forgive my naivety, when you say static filter do you mean its not moving? I have an lfo moving the filter cutoff ,or do you mean the eqs, they do have a bit of dynamic gain on them ( the q3 last in the chain is dymamic about 1.5 db dynamic gain)with the normal gain boosted or cut in the 2-4 db range. My chain is Serum - ProQ3 - Saturn - Wider - Maag eq - teote - ProQ3 All q3s are linear mode ( it sounds better?) I aware having sharps qs really affects the ringing so i have dialled them back, to minimise it the best i can but some always remains. All in all Im happy with it on monitors at a low volume, also dont mind how it sounds on phone speakers Just with the headphones it sounds like a different bass entirely with the other elements sounding the same, if i get it sounding good in headphones (the bass) it sounds bad on monitors, could that be frequency response related? i know they arent the same response, or is the the ringing from my patch? For example you have a stereo environment on monitors but a binaural (you can't hear the left signal with the right ear on headphones, but on monitors you can). There are other differences too like the speaker size which has influence over the sound difference between headphones and monitors/festival speakers. some headphones are "better" than others in this regard but I don't use them that way. I use my headphones to check how stuff sounds on headphones & consider how much I want to change my mix then.
I have a question about grouping track in my template I have drums / synths / fx and now that you've talked about this problem of phase shifting i have a doubt in my group (synth and fx) i usually just cut the low end by 100hz and place a sidechain, is better to remove the low end cut and place on any single instrument and also for the sidechain?
i'd put it on singluar tracks so I have more control but the other way is not bad per se. as long as you know that it's there and it doesn't create any kind of problems for you!

@@alby1819 Psytrance snares don't have a fundamental frequency (or at least not a strong one like most snares). Really it is pure noise so it doesn't matter... really outside of KB you don't have to care about phase allignment between elements...

this will not remove any post processing from one bass note playing on the moment of another... use resampling instead!

So when I put a L2 Limiter on the Master it’s bad for my Kick and Bass?

you have to be careful, don't leave the filter on there all the time maybe or go for the linear phase option instead
