I think what Run Rig shared with their music was a link with the culture they were brought up in. They made it cool to speak (Scots) Gaelic to lots of young people who used to think it was only a sign of backwardness. The pride they show with their music is something that everyone can aspire to - the only boundaries are what you let be put up. Alba Gu Brath!
Lucky you!!! I adore Runrig--especially the MacDonald brothers. Brilliant songwriters and musicians. A relatively new fan, I'm just beginning to distinguish Donnie's voice from Bruce's; in my humble opinion, they're both wonderfully gifted singers. Donnie's pure voice soars; Bruce's voice is earthy and gritty. But we mustn't overlook Rory--something about his voice tugs at my heart when he sings lead... Respect from an American lass!
I also have a very strong sense of the supernatural. Last night as I was consuming, I caught sight of Miriam O'Farrell outside on her porch and I thought to myself that I had seen her in another life. But then I remembered that it was actually the week before as she was selling carrots at the market.
I am Canadian of Scottish Highland ancestry and runrig is absolutely amazing I feel cheated we haven't heard of them sooner, payola is shit music, but runrig's music is timeless and fantastic or as I can say in Scottish Gaelic, Glay Glay Va!! I am thankful to almighty God for my Scottish origins, hello to all my Scottish brothers accross the sea.
this song is pure heaven, I can imagine sitting on a cloud looking down to the earth below and remembering everything good that that life has to give, + it reminds me of an x girlfriend who I loved and should never have let go, This song is pure emotion.
AMEN, santiano42! Runrig's music is brilliant and universally appealing, transcending nationality, generations and politics! Love this song, this vid and this band... God bless Scotland and Runrig forever!
There's something about Gaelic and it's related languages that I just love. I can't speak it but the sound is musical in of itself. That bit with the drums around 3 min into the song sounds a bit like it's Native American.

I heard one of the lead singers is from Cape Breton Island, Canada. Anyone know? I think they are brilliant. And still going strong after all these years! Visited the Outer Hebrides a few years back. All the young people there really look up to these guys.
@@pauledwards5573 Pete Wishart who's an SNP (Scottish independence party) MP gave me free use of some lyrics for my book The Summer King. I TOTALLY agree with you about Rory's voice. It's beautiful and heartfelt! I think he should do more of the lead vocals now, like he used to on their earlier gaelic albums. I think the MacDonald brothers make Runrig!

Yes there is Norse influence in Scotland, it's hard to put everything in a UA-cam comment. Well I never said it was "always there", I think Celtic languages (in the Q form) arrived 500 BC or thereabouts in Scotland but I'm not sure (don't think any one is). And since it's IndoEuropean it has to have come from the Caucuses around 4,000 years ago! Linguists do now think though that Q Celtic was first and so Gaelic was already in Scotland before the new P shift (Picitish(British) from the SE.
I'm Scots as are all my family going back generations. Love all of Runrig's work, listened to it for years, but as I'm from the southwest (Ayrshire, although generations back from Argyll), was never exposed to gaelic / taught it at school. Does anybody know a good internet source of the english translations of Runrigs gaelic music as its kinda crazy that after all these years of appreciating their music I still struggle to grasp the lyrics of the gaelic songs ..

You're forgetting the major Norse input to Gaelic Scotland. The Goraidh of the song was Guðrøðr Crobh-bhán. Several important clans claim him as their ancestor. Scots Gaelic was 'made in Scotland' by mixing Middle Irish from Ireland with Norse, plus Pictish and Brittish. You don't have to pretend it was 'always there' to make it Scottish now. Everybody and everything originally came from somewhere else, just as there are lots of influences in the music. It's the final mix that gives the blas.
great band, i only knew runrig last year and since then i've been thinking to my self, where the hell have they been all this years? this is an old footage with Donnie Munro, just look at Calum with black hair... :)
@this0033 The problem with Bruce is that he's not Scottish. He's Canadian and has this country and western music tembre in his voice that I can't cope with. For me Runrig were a symbol of Scotland and they've lost a part of this when they decided to have a singer from a different cultural backgrund. It was never about having the best or a perfect singer. It was about identity and singing in gaelic and I can't explain what else. When Donnie left, they lost their soul.
@tinasiig no defence.. but it was Donnie´s voice what made them great. Of course Bruce is a good singer, not bad. And I wish, Donnie would come back. And the reasons, why Donnie left the band may be his personal, but i´m missing him (excuse me for my bad english)

... running crocodile. Thank you, I've gone mute with laughter!

Are you still listening? I can never let this song go.
It doesn't matter who sings the songs, Rory and Calum are deserve all the credit for being such fantastic song writers.
2022 still listening to Runrig, we were fortunate to see them In there hay day many times
My mother was scottish, it is only recently I have discovered my passion and roots for scotland, still never to late, lol.
14 years on how’s that going?
That’s great to hear . It’s a truly wonderful place . And as you say it’s never too late and you’ll always be welcome
Hope you made it over at some point , didn’t see it was 14 years ago 😮
My papa was one of the men in the first song! It’s so nice to see him in this ! ❤️❤️❤️
