Love this. This would be so fun to play with and you know players would go absolutely wild as soon as it's suddenly lit up for a mob boss fight on the dance floor of a seedy club. Round is very fitting for the future theme.

This is the kind of build is where a scan'n'cut or a cricut would really shine and significantly reduce the amount of time required. I know not everyone has a fancy cutter but they're good for stuff like this when you have to cut a million tiny things :)

This could be a really cool way of making a BattleTech board, I can imagine everything painted kind of like Tron but Mechs... It would also be something you could develop a simple style for so you wouldn't be painting each Mech as a 'real' Mech but as a hologram, maybe a black primer with neon edge highlighting or drybrushing.

Obviously you need to color code the enemy factions in your game, so when a fight breaks out, you can have the underlight match that faction's color.

Honestly my initial impression was it's a cool piece of eye candy with the lights but what do the lights really do for the game (any game). Then you stated about how the lights were only to be turned on for certain occasions then I thought ok this is a really cool piece and the lights are a really nice component to it

  • @ClayMann

No judgement on this build at all. It looks fantastic! It just inspired the idea that you could 3D print the tiles in transparent resin and use inks to filter the light allowing for an entire board to light up with furniture items printed clear with ink details also lighting up when placed. Way beyond my skill level but its fun imagining what you might do at 2am one morning on a mad creative binge with ideas like this all locked away ready to have a go at. So not only is this a great piece its really inspiring so many variations!

I think you can actually order thin, clear 1" chits of various colors and shapes in bulk for pretty cheap. They're used in schools to teach basic math. I got a bin of 500 opaque, plastic, centimeter "counting cubes", 50 each of 10 colors for about $15. I used them on graph paper in place of minis and various obstructions when I got started, since my players and I don't mind being abstract, and they stack nicely to make trees or steps or pillars, track elevation with flight, or even be used to track conditions.

Hitting those impressed hex pieces in the EVA foam with a heat gun very quickly should make those lines solidify, and you could probably pop those out instead of needing to cut them out

This was great! Now I'm eyeballing my palm router.... Quick dumb request sir!: Washes have been around forever - you made a wonderful DIY wash video for us, you made a super useful "Mod Podge + Black Paint" Video for us (that has a TON of views) - would you be willing to give us an in-depth quicky video on your oil washes since you seem to be loving them recently (Between your Nurgle buildings with the washes of orange/yellow/browns and you doing panel lining in this video) I'm beginning to start it as well (picked up a 25pack tiny tube oil pack at my Dollar Tree/White Spirits at Home Depot which FYI is a lot cheaper than an art store and in bulk!) I'd like to see some showcase projects of the pros/cons you've learned thus far and what to look for in a good consistency of the mix...I know you've probably got videos lined up for the next few months but a quicky like 7-10min video would be greatly appreciated to add to your list sir!

    - Then I looked at the time lapse of you cutting the hexes and felt nauseous.

"Ok....the LEDs are taped in, but how he gonna get them to show through the wood?" 🤔🤔
*puts plexiglass over the side that's wide open*
This is why I don't teach others how to make terrain and leave this sort of thing to the professionals 😆
On a serious note, that entire setup has such a nice shape you could easily build an outer shell to make a light-up disco club for regular tabletop wargames that don't need a grid. Slap that bad boy down in the middle of your Nurgle city ruins and you have yourself some Plague Marines thinking about switching their loyalties to Slaanesh.

Not all fantasy rpgs use a square grid. The Fantasy Trip, from Steve Jackson Games is based around a hexagonal grid, as it is based on two mini wargames, Melee and Wizard. Something like this would work great with any of those games.

Flippin' awesome idea and outcome, Jeremy. I've already designed in my head how I will do it differently when I make mine: Lasers! I will laser cut three 1/16" acrylic sheets: one with hexes cut out, one a plain circle, one with squares cut out. Glue those into a sandwich. Laser cut a fourth piece of frosted acrylic sheet to be the diffuser. Now I have a hex grid on one side and a square grid on the other and I can arrange the tiles, reusing the cutouts, any way I want. It's nice having a friend with a large laser cutter.

My mind is thinking how you could have saved some time cutting the grid if you gone with a vinyl sticker. Vinyl stickers are something I've looked into for building a home arcade cabinet. One reason I invested in a vinyl cutter/printer is my GF likes it for the custom (insert event/holiday) cards.

  • @jek__

This is a super cool table, I wish I had a use for it lol, I basically only play high fantasy so as you mentioned, it works a lot better for sci-fi
Diagonals are worse on hex grids (tiles are diagonal to each other if the line between their center points goes through a corner point), on hex grids diagonals aren't contiguous with the tile youre standing on, so no one ever uses them for anything lol. So much so that we dont even talk about hex diagonals, we just assume square-like diagonals imposed on a hex grid. However hex grids have 50% more orthogonals though, and since orthogonal movement makes more sense than diagonal movement intuitively, this can be advantageous. However, If you include square diagonal movement but exclude hex diagonal movement, there are more possible moves on a square grid than a hex grid, but then you need rules for counting diagonal movement. In hex grids a diagonal is invariably just made with two orthogonals, because hex diagonals are visually disconnected and so awkward because of it

I think the only thing I would have done differently would be to place maybe 5 supports inside it to support the plexi glass, I just envision someone leaning over to move a character and putting too much weight on it. 1 in the center and maybe 4 spaced around evenly. But it's an epic build

  • @clarioneversole9013
    @clarioneversole9013 2 роки тому

I wonder how well it would work and if it would be even more cost effective to use 2-3 embroidery hoops of the same size with a mesh of 1/2-3/4" poultry netting in 1-2 of them (or maybe just use a tennis racket?) to glue the LEDs against. Sand the facings of the inner and outer parts of the hoop that touch, put a bead of wood glue around the sanded face of the inner part of the hoop, center the mesh on top, then press the mesh down over the wood glue with the outer part of the hoop and tighten to bind it all together. Once it sets you can cut away the excess mesh, remove the hoop fasteners, and drill your holes for power connection and sensors. You could either alternate which side the LEDs are facing by spiral threading them through a single mesh, or use three hoops with two meshes and sets of LEDs to sandwich the electronics between while having the lights face outward so you don't get any dark spots. Space the LEDs in a spiral pattern through the mesh for even lighting of both sides and the ability to create a color gradient from the center outward, then screw and/or glue the hoops together before screwing that same kind of plexiglass to the non-mesh, outer sides. Perhaps cut the plexiglass a little wider in diameter than the hoops if you have a way to do so evenly, and then cover all the seams with a flexible foam outer layer with cutouts for the sensor and power connector, which you could detail prior for further customization.

I'd recommend to anyone attempting to take the cutters you used to make impressions in the foam and reuse them for aligning the tiles on the board. It'll be perfectly spaced and give just enough room in between for light.

and when you're not using it, hang it on the wall as an awesome lighting piece!
i may just have to make something like this myself; i'm a big sucker for those led strips :-)

you should get yourself a silhouette cameo, if you're planning on making more stuff like this. It cuts way more than vinyl, and would have taken care of all the hexes you cut.

As a cheap alternative to rolling through a pasta machine, do what pastry chefs do. Use a rolling pin with two flat sticks of the same size on the outside of your “dough”

Would love a list of the songs used in the video, especially the one that plays during the painting of the tiles. Super cool project btw!

I think things like chalk lines or stone tiles could help hexagons be more fantasy. This light up board could make really cool magical scenes!

I honestly use the hexagon pattern for my D&D tables it dose work well for a group that keeps in a circular pattern for fighting I’m proud of my group for doing this but they keep getting beat by a wedge shape in our battles I was going to introduce a Syfi city to the group in this campaign later I will totally use this style when they come to the ship

Really cool build. But to me the best part of this video was your selection of music! It was fitting and I just dug it!

Have you ever spent a whole afternoon painstakingly cutting tiny pieces of the same shape one by one... only to find out soon afterwards there's a simple machine or method that does exactly that?

It is very clear that this was a work close to your heart, what with how giddy and excited you were in the intro. Like you couldn't wait to show it off! Nice work I love it! Care to try building a decent medieval dnd equivalent? ;)

i love the concept of the round board and the hexes are perfect. I wonder what the largest size would be function and maybe on a lazy susan. it would be a lot of fun for a skirmish game

I thought this was a Jazza project at first, because Tabletop Time has had a lot of really creative and interesting gaming board videos. You really made a really interesting board, and it's given me an idea for a creative use for a hexagon board!

Looks awesome Jeremy! Hex tiles always takes me back to Battletech. Haven’t played that in ages. The LED lights look great.
