When I owned a wooden Grand Banks, I had great success with varnish over CPES becuase the CPES bonded so much better to the wood than the varnish ever did. I used at least two coats of CPES before six coats of Dutch varnish. If you get the first coat of varnish on before the CPES cures, a chemical bond supposedly forms. This method avoids the wasted time in applying a first, thinned coat of varnish on bared wood.
Happy Birthday "Lady Z"! Only the BEST have birthdays this time of year. I wish this is among the best you have had. I, also have a birthday coming soon. It will be my 79th. The shear fact of that age amazes me to no end. I had little expectation of reaching such heights of age and now here I am. Birthday salutations to any else celebrating as well.
Happy birthday to come ric you legend. You have permission to eat as much cake as you like, and not feel guilty. All the very best on your day brother. Best wishes 🇦🇺
Hi Peter, with the damage already done on the deck I would definitely Varnish to ad another few layers of protection for the future, and also to protect the Epoxy you have on there, All the very best, Al
AF Restoration has the same laser engraving machine as you. He etches shiny brass by applying non shiny masking tape to the surface of the brass. It was in his episode about a 1930s desk.
Personally, If I had a boat that was more or less in the water permanently as a live-aboard, I would really want to own or have a long term lease on a covered boat-house. Besides protection from sun/rain/hail/snow/wind and whatever, the storage room and workspace would be such a blessing.. Living aboard comes with so many space and place compromises, a boathouse would really help.
The wood? In the '50's the western lumber market was "flooded" with Lauan Mahogany from the Philippines. Not really mahogany, but much cheaper, and the stuff was what DIYers and many contractors used. My dad's lumber yard had tons of it. My uneducated guess is you have a foredeck of sun bleached Meranti, a type of "Lauan" that came in light red and yellow.
You know, I did wonder about this myself. But the construction details really suggest these planks are original, which mean the late 30's. It's also much harder that Lauan.
@@TravelsWithGeordie Ok, there you go. I didn't realize that Poem was of that era, so it must be mahogany, just bleached and sanded out. Good luck my friend. Love your work.
Peter you are a very talented fellow working with boats why don't you start a repair business for classic boats as you have all the right tools and knowledge best wishes Alan and i thoroughly enjoy your sessions.
I would go with the epoxy resin it's a more durable surface compared to varnish. The only concern is that it will turn yellow over time but it's got a yellow hue to begin with. Choice is ultimately yours Peter. You have more experience than i do but thats my two cents worth!
Belt sander instead of circular sander? So I am always amazed at the quality you get out of these tools. Would a belt sander leave less marking then a circular one? (if any!) and then have you thought of finishing manually with a long board? Or is that an antiquated method long abandoned? I love that you collected the saw dust! 15:26, I love the happy satisfying laugh! Yeahh. happy BDay Lady Zephyrus!
I think I have 3 slabs similar to it.. Spoiler I don't know what it's called... when I plained the edges it was mustard yellow but the exposed surface while it seasoned on the roof of the shed for seven years.. I kept turning it.. is a dark brown/red. It's twice as heavy and much more dense than the original wood on my boat, which I was told is mahogany and sort of the weight of balsa wood. I would have preferred you to have treated the whole deck as there's a danger of stripes. I don't know much about epoxy etc.. Could you use a layer of tissue and flood the deck with epoxy like they do to tables.. or would it crack? I wondered about some extra fixings at the ends of the planks and on the deck beams. How about a hatch using a sheet of Perspex? I replaced my foredeck with VT&G Larch and about where your hatch is have a 20" x 27" skylight (aka thick piece of actual Perspex).. next year.. I will make it into a hatch. I have a blackout blind as it's the bedroom but before the blind.. I sort of got used to not sleeping in the dark. On the subject of goo.. I mainly use silicon, acrylic & siliconised acrylic.. Could you do something about your cable steering systems as I have chain and rods 1/2"! It's heavy.. and have been thinking about cable.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADY Z 🎉🎂. HOPE YOU HAD A GREAT BIRTHDAY, AND GOT SPOILT ROTTEN!! SORRY ABOUT YELLING BUT I HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU HEAR ME FROM MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 TAKE GOOD CARE. (edited for more) 🎂🎂
repurpose a webbing ratchet strap to become a band clamp when clamping 4 square mitered frames. Works great!!!!! and its cheap.....and for gosh sakes use the safety squint or get a safety glass on!!!!!
No idea what the wood is. However, even if it is mahogany, the shape it is in I would really consider a full epoxy coat or 2, and then a good 2 part epoxy primer and paint. Hopefully, it would reduce the maintenance and extend the life of deck, so you can spend more time celebrating birthdays!
Another great video, but sorry Peter, I think you should varnish the deck. I'm not sure I trust penetrating epoxy enough as the decking moves over the years. You could also introduce a bit of a Mahogany tint as the wood certainly looks golden (on my screen anyway).
Thanks Brent! You're right, i surely expect it to move, which i s why i am hesitant to varnish, as that movement will cause many cracks that will then trap moisture.
Too bad about your time crunch. Would have loved to see you replace the forward hatch properly with a deck frame and no pay under the hatch cowling. Maybe in a few years. I'm patient like that.
Hi folks! I’m really hoping for some guidance on what type of wood the foredeck is. And what finish I might use if it’s mahogany.
Mahogany takes on a golden hue after continuous sun exposure. Oak darkens, mahogany get lighter.
Happy Birthday Lady Zephyrs. Cheers and down the hatch.
I enjoyed your woodworking artistry today on my October 20th Birthday! Happy Birthday Lady Z!
And a happy birthday to you as well Joe! I'll be sure to pass along your birthday wishes to Lady Z.
Hello Peter, I support keeping the foredeck bright. Poem is such a classic. I think keeping it bright is best.
Thanks Joe! I completely agree.
Happy Birthday Lady Z so nice to see you in the episode

I do enjoy watching you throw the tools around while you’re working on the project
Jeff! Am I a tool thrower? I'll have to look into that.

So much great stuff here! Good thoughts on the wood and skylight options. I love the cable steering as it so simple and can easily be repaired at sea.

Ya know with your carpentry talent you should be building fine furniture.
Thanks David! But with fine furniture it's build it and forget it. I couldn't bear the thought of not nurturing the same wood over and over again.
2 application of penetrating epoxy! The old wood may take 3. Sealed so it will be protected. Take care, tom
Thanks for the tip, I am glad you're watching! Cheers!
Was the LadyZ once called Raneeen?
I don't know, we know much of her history, but there are gaps. When she was purchased she was 'Andromeda.'

Where are all the upper deck structures? Geordies upper deck is completly empty....what happend?

Light Red Meranti?
Good thought Peter. It certainly does remind me of that. But I suspect it's original and cant imagine Meranti from 1938.
Mask up! That was a dusty episode!
It's true Daniel. During the edit i realized how dusty it was.
What is your favourite restaurant in Victoria? We always love to have a recommendation for decent fare. 😊
Oh so many! For a pub, its easy - the Bent Mast. Italian - Il Covo. For Japanese fusion- Nubo (the original). Intimate bistro style - Cafe Brio.
I would use penetrating epoxy on the entire foredeck! Multiple coats!
