Mic 2 hands down. I wonder how the Samar sounds on vocals, seems beautifully rich. Great playing too! Came for the comparison, stayed for the wonderful playing.
Cool, thanks! Both are great microphones, and there are obviously applications for the RE20 that the ribbon just wouldn't work as well for due to the pattern differences. I'd do a vocal comparison..... but honestly nobody wants to hear me sing! :D Glad you enjoyed the playing!
@@matt-darwinAbsolutely, I cherish my RE20 from the 70s. Use it all the time. This Samar has a subtle sweetness like most of their other microphones, works great on your sax here, plenty of flexibility with how to mix it in post. Something that's really nice about the RE20 is it has very little coloration off axis for a dynamic microphone, so it's always been very nice for capturing brass and not being too sensitive to a little bit of movement.
Thanks! Yes it's definitely fine margins when choosing between them. I typically use the AL95, but live the RE20 is amazing, and also if a little of those extra brights is needed, such as for big band horns.
While I love the ElectroVoice RE-series mics, the RE-20 here does what RE-20s often do to my ear: it's a bit "pinched" sounding. It seems to push the 3k-ish region in a way that I find unpleasant. Sort of an upper nasal region. I prefer the AL-95 here by a good bit. The RE-10, -11, -15, and -16 don't have that same pinched quality to them. Thanks so much for this example! There aren't enough AL-95 vids out there. You're a wonderful player, by the way!
Yeah there's definitely that boost in the higher frequencies with the RE20. I like it for when that cut is needed (and for live) but in a jazz combo setting, the AL95 is really really nice.
One is far better IMHO ! More attack and sharpness deserve better the range of an alto sax, the ribbon is probably 2, not too bad but it makes the alto muddy ( listened through studio monitoring ) so like it or dont like it, its a matter of taste! The ruban 2 would certainly makes a tenor sax better in my opinion. Nice play ! cheers
Thanks Arthur. The ribbon does indeed work well on the tenor. But then so does the RE20. All down to the vibe you're going for as you say; I like a dark alto tone rather than bright, so the RE20 was a little more brass for me here.
It's subtle, the RE20 has a little more brightness that possibly comes across as shrill when compared. But both are great microphones and sound fab on their own!

Both are great instrument mics. Very nice playing as well!

@@matt-darwin I understand in this case ;)
I prefer Mic 2 it sounds sweeter and more smooth
That one is the ribbon - Samar AL95. It's what I use more now. The RE20 is great for live work though
Frankly, I can't see any noticeable difference. Both are good.

On a side note: which setup do you play here?
The mouthpiece is a 10MFan Alto Madness 8, with Boston Sax Shop Black 2.5 reeds. Sax is my Selmer Balanced Action from '35
So, which is which? I'm interested in mic 1.
1 is the EV RE20.
