"Play your gloom axe Stephen O'Malley Sub bass clinging to the sides of the valley Sub bass ringing in each last ditch and combe Greg Anderson purvey a sonic doom."
I don't feel comfortable using the word cwm in a sentence, it's just more Welsh than English... Fill it with water (and sub-bass) and call it a tarn. [edit... aha, Julian Cope was born in Wales]
I memorized this entire song, the spoken words. I used to recite it along with the song. I haven't done that in awhile, but I still know most of this by heart! Love this whole album, but this and A Shaving Of The Horn That Speared You are my two favorite songs. Sunn O))) is absolutely amazing.
I was referring it with my best friend so many times, especially at a mountain in Ioannina, Greece. Was 20 years ago, we were only the 2 of us in a small valley at the top of the mountain, along with 4 horses at some distance! Now im away, I heard there's 10s of young people parachute from the peak, it's crowded in a sense..
This never gets old..... I remember being totally immersed in all things COIL during the time of it's release (2003).... this definitely owes a lot to 'COIL presents TIME MACHINES', 'constant shallowness leads to evil'.....
Running my LCD-2c's through a Schiit Vali 2 (Genalex E88CC tube) headphone amp, and a Modi Multibit DAC. I can safely say at this point, I can now fully appreciate White 1 as a body of work in a way I never experienced before. Amazing and consistent work.
These lyrics fascinate me. However, are they about something specific? Or is it intentionally suppose to sound like the delirious ramblings of a madman?
I really enjoy that there are lyrics to this one. I'm fairly new to his work. Does he have others that are spoken as well or does anyone know of something similar?
I have known about these guys but they've never been my thing. My best guess is that this is useful for zoning out but I wanted to hear from those who enioy this music and ask why you specifically enjoy this music? I know that it has a fairly large following so there must be something to it
It's all personal opinion of course. But for me, I just love an intense atmosphere. I like grindcore and death metal as well, but for me this is more intense. I guess it just resonates more with me. I remember being depressed and another Sunn O))) song (Belulrol Pusztit) was like the perfect soundtrack to that period in my life. If I would need to explain my depression, I hink that song would have explained it best (soundwise, the lyrics are Hungarian and I don't speak that language. Another example, different genre, same kind of feel (to me at least) Brighter Death Now, with the song Fourteen. It's like something is boiling, waiting to explode, yet the explosion never really comes in the 21 minutes so there is a certain frustration , yet it feels great because it's an emotion I can relate to. (by the way, I am not all dark, intense and depressed, Jaga Jazzist is one of my favourite bands as well)
It’s all about the atmosphere....I have played Sunn so many times to random people over the years and they always leave feeling a little uneasy, sometimes even slightly disturbed. The fact that Sunn can accomplish this solely with instrumentation (they do occasionally have lyrics but they more so compliment the instrumentation), is quite amazing in my opinion. Add this to the fact that Sunn is some of the most amazing live performers I have ever seen in my life. By the way, I have heard a ton of Sunn rip-offs and they don’t even come close to bringing to the table what Sunn does with their music. I’m not really a big fan of drone metal, but I am a HUGE fan of Sunn
Putting an adbreak in this defeats the whole point of this meditation in sound. I was settling in then suddenly I got blasted with a banjo chiptune accompaniment proclaiming offers for insurance. Just don't.
What's music got to do with it. We can look at a landscape and appreciate it. We can also look at an abstract work and see the aesthetic value. Sonic art can have value without being music. Agreed there is a lot of tosh in the noise scene, but I think most people would concur, this transcends that. Whilst this all may be true don't feel you have to get it, or like it, as with any other art work. You'll then find it doesn't offend you and you can simply move on.
Sunn 0))) is much, much more interesting as a concept and as an idea than as an actual band making music. Just to put an example the Melvins' 'Joe Preston' and 'Melvins' albums and especially the Magnificent 'Mirror Reaper' by Bell Witch make everything (or almost everything) Sunn0)))'s ever done seem just boring and unoriginal and pedestrian and silly and a chore to listen to. Just **my very personal opinion** .

I love that Julian Cope uses “gloom-axe” as a kenning for “guitar”. Brilliant.
Julian Cope sounds like the weirdest Dungeons & Dragons DM

I put this to the max through my Orange AMP through a aux jack. I sit my head against the amp and meditate. Frequencies of power.

Amazing....enormous powerful piece!!!
This album needs a vinyl reissue.

This version, where he clips the mic at 3:16 while saying "Death", is still far better than the 'fixed' version where they cut the volume

Best song to do homework/paint/disassociate to, the choices are endless.
The amount of times I've gone to sleep listening to this album can testify to that. lol
Same, but I've had uneasy dreams melding with A Shaving of the Horn that Speared You a few times.

I'm leaning towards the delirious madman explanation, though there are references to real world events and concepts

THEY USE REAL HUGE AMPS PARTIALLY HIDDEN IN THE UNDERWORLD
They have a flanger pedal on it as well
You can find their gear online. They use several Ratts and Big Muffs... other weird stuff as well.
