The soundtrack to the Deer Hunter made the movie.
The sorrow and wistfulness, the loneliness of someone that has been catapulted out of their life.
    Thank you.
Whatever you have achieved in your life since then,You have created a masterpiece.

I love the movie, and come from Russian descent, i lived the weddings and funerals and worked in a factory up north, then went over...came back empty and sad, lonely. While I was in WA State I visited the movie sets where the hunting scenes were shot, went to the falls where DeNiro was. I raise deer here in Texas and had to do a terrible thing, the head Buck, a champion for years was in a fight and was disemboweled. I had to get a hunting rifle, and while I was taking aim, I looked at him, looking at me, and I had to take the shot. DeNiro didn't or couldn't, but I had no choice, and it brought it all back. Brothers...you are not alone, and I don't know when the pain will stop, but I want to ride it out, not bail out.

This is this. This is the movie that should have been his signature. A masterpiece, in which he played a recognizably American hero. But de Niro proved to be a fool. He preferred making glib (not ironic) garbage with his buddy Martin Scorcese.

arm It’s my favorite movie ever to. I’ll never forget the first time I saw this movie. I was completely blown away by what I was witnessing. Thinking this was what the soldiers had to deal with. How horrendous. This movie was a perfect example of how we didn’t gain anything from Vietnam. It was a disruptive and pointless war. It also shows that war not only changes the soldier, but family and friends as well. My uncle was a marine during Vietnam. He came back a changed man.

I grew up in Pittsburgh in the 70's and this film was the perfect portrayal of the culture in which I grew up. Michael Cimino did an excellent job and the actors really researched the environment, mannerisms, religion, and customs of western PA. This music is AMAZING and captures the heart of the steel city and blue collar America

Saw this film with my beloved grandmother at the Nostrand movie theater in Brooklyn as a 7 year old child. Neither of us knew what we were in for. This film made an incredible impact on me. Bought the soundtrack about 10 years later. It has remained part of my life from that point. Glad to see it in its entirety here. This album is poignant, sad, bittersweet and makes me want to cry every time. What a masterpiece of a collection.

Saw this when I was young at the theater. Movie shook me up. Prior to this movie, I was probably a typical kid where all war movies starred John Wayne and 'war' was theatrically clinical, clean and it was clear cut - good guys vs bad guys. After seeing this, I wanted to flee to some remove part of the world and hide because i was scared i was gonna get drafted and sent to a place like Vietnam and probably die.

That’s not what you thought as a kid. If you were a young kid when The Deer Hunter came out, you’d never seen a war picture starring John Wayne in a theater, and the draft had been abolished several years earlier, so you never thought of fleeing the country to avoid the draft.

The reason for the intensity of the emotion this soundtrack evokes is due to Tommy Tedesco and his heartfelt playing.
I met the man once, just briefly when he was touring through Minneapolis in the 1980s, playing a gut-string guitar that some famous guitar company gave him free so he could do a workshop. He really was very tired and it was clear to me that he loved playing and giving a workshop to a bunch of guitar players but still, you could tell that he loathed being on the road because he was away from his family in California.
It's obvious the man felt deeply and that was reflected in his playing here-- this always hard to explain to non-musicians and non-guitar players. It's almost mystical-- but I digress--
TT's rendition of the main theme for the Deer Hunter is because of his sensitive playing because his playing "sings"-- you can test it this way, the following way.
Now if you don't have the voice and you can't sing and aren't trained then get someone to sing the theme and in person, they can explain to you what is important for guitar players, it's important "to quietly sing" everything you play.
    Peace.
