- Nearly a decade ago, Priyanshi Shah, 21, became a Jain nun when she was 12 years old. Few years later, her younger brother Bhavya also renounced the world to become a monk. ThePrint travelled to Surat to meet the siblings to understand what drew them to this path and also spoke to their parents and elder brother.

Almost all the people who become Jain monks or nuns at a very young age say that they were inspired by their parents. This means that the kids were practically schooled every day to believe that this is the correct and ultimate path at a very impressionable age. Wouldn't it have been better for the parents to wait until the kids reach adulthood before they took this decision. In our country religion is such a sensitive topic that no government dares to interfere in this.
This principle is True for most kids in the regular school system as well.
See, you can brainwash for some desire but not for lifelong difficulty. it's not an easy task. There is tyag at every step.. Vinay, karuna and all virtues. It's like an exam at every step.
Similar to what we are schooled by the media.

Huge respect for my Jain brothers and sisters
A girl May attain puberty at any age after 12 or even earlier but it is a proven fact that real maturity of a girl happens only after the age of 21 when apart from the body the brain reaches the stage of complete growth..
For males it is at 25 ..
Any decision taken by the girls or boys before the completion of the maturity is purely either impulsive or because of direct or indirect coercion by those who have influence over the kids over a period of time..
Parents try to influence by inserting thier own wishes and dreams or things which they wished for but couldn't make them happen for them and during the time that kids spend their free time during school holidays,or after school time plays a very big part in shaping up an opinion..
About the Jain munis..
Although Jainism was recently declared as a seperate religion which was practically wrong as it is just a way of life a kind of discipline instilled in life by own will or by force and since the community got the seperate religion and alongwith that the prized minority status different sects of the extremely micro minority community have become vocal and ambitious and are openly calling to shun all activities and rituals which are linked to santhana Hindu sanskriti,, Marriage rituals until recently where exactly the same as Hindus but now a very big significant percentage of marriages are being customised under a newly created Jain vidhi,,Post death rituals from mundan ceremony to 12 days of mourning have been done away with partly and in many cases completely to the extent that in many recent cases mourning ends the second day after death and no post death rituals like thier ancestors used to do as similar to Hindu rituals..
And to showcase power and following existing Jain sadhus are maybe trying hard to influence as much as possible to get Deeksha bcoz the power of a Jain saadhu is measured by the number of disciples he has and in this already shrinking community of just around 70lakhs that too has atleast 3-5 different sects completely against each other claiming supremacy those who worship the idol and those who don't is a Big divide in this very very small community and the digambar Jain sect is another completely different sect which considers itself as the best...
Also not helping this community hurtling towards extinction in the very near future is family planning which has been adopted big time to save resources and also creating their own kind of Jain only ghettos in apartment complexes and minimising interactions with other communities..The rigidity adopted by this community just in the last 10 years has become open for all to.see and the number of temples closed bcoz of zero population in some villages and towns and on the other side building exclusive temples for just 10-15 families in an apartment when already there are temples in the vicinity all is not just drain on the resources that this community is fiercely trying to protect but it is also cutting out its next generation from outside their community which again has just micro families and the surge of getting Diksha extracting the already few young and productive...
Salute to brothers and sisters😙☺❤
Great Initiative. Hope some Learning experience is imparted to many in a materialistic world such as today.
When was this world not materialistic?
I have huge respect for Jainism and their tradition. They have made a lot of contribution to the ways of RajaYoga/hathaYoga. In Hinduism too Monkhood is highely respected to achieve Moksha but Lord Krishna has considered life of Grihastha who is engaged in the world but not attached to it as equally great practice. Is called Karmayoga
In Hinduism, We think of the spritital journey as a marathon, not a sprint. Slowly Slowly with the help of 4 yogas , we develop vairagya from the material world.Once the vairagya is developed and family is self sustained , a hindu leaves home for sanayasa.
8-12 years old children!! How is this even allowed , i seriously question such parents. Gov should ban such things for children below 14, are they capable for taking such decisions? Do they even know what's life and materiality? You feed them Religious things from a very young age, of course they are into it, this is so bad!!
Spiritual seeking I guess..
Exactly. This is child abuse
And then they have the audacity to point fingers towards other religion (you know which one...don't ask) for brainwashing their children.

@@craft.crystal908 you know that it’s a crime if it happens below the age of consent, right? There is a reason for it. Children aren’t capable enough to make these judgments. That’s why this “spiritual” crap is also a form of child abuse

Would be interesting to know the legal perspective where a law like RTE would mandate a child to finish his or her education. Does religious education count as normal education, legally speaking? Or is the law being broken?
That actually is clash of Fundamental rights... Because "Right to Education" is a right to the individual and a duty to the State.. RTE was born out of a Directive Principle (DPSP ~ Art 45) and a duty entrusted to the parent/guardian as well.
However Art 21, right to personal liberty and Art 25 Right to freedom of conscience and profession exists.. the only factor that is in contravention is the Age of the individual.. when is an individual capable of deciding his/life in matters of religious practise such as renunciation or ascetic lifestyle is a matter of dispute.
Why nothing is said when a child is married off ???
Education means to educate yourself for a reason, if it was to earn money and survive in society and to fulfill your daily needs (so called global education system) but if you want to achevie spiritual values you need educate yourself in that manner it's also called religious Education, so no question of rte here😊

This Video has done a mistake by dubbing it to English incorrectly especially I belive when dubbing says God I belive might have said Mahaveer Baghwan who is a Tirtankaras . Being a Jain I can say Jainism does not belive in god instead belives in Tirtankaras who attained omniscience, Hence Jainism is not a theist but agnostic in nature.

I wonder why they are all talking of god in such a literal sense. Jainism is supposed to have a much more abstract conception of god... so god does not give them any material, any traits, or any instructions. And yet, these people talk as if there is a personal god. Strange.
The problem i think is with the translation, the Monk and Nun has given reply in vernacular but it seems the translator may have used incorrect word to explain. Jainism does not believe in GOD per se as an Entity but All souls are capable of achieving this state where they shed all karma and become totally detached from matter. This purest state of soul is Moksha and this Soul is regards as Omniscient and Omnipotent as Soul does not die not nor need anything to exist...hence Invincible.

Yes, Jainism has a system of Updhaan within which one can live close to Sadhu/Sadhviji bhagwant and emulate their lifestyle for around 1.5 month, study scriptures, clarify misunderstandings about the Jain dharma..furthered if ine wishes to permanently become a Sadhu/Sadhvi and demonstrates their intrest and calibre in the area, they can live with the monks for extended periods of time where they essentially get trained to accept and love the pinnacle of a Jain lifestyle (as the older brother mentioned, it is no brainwashing done here which is why only those with adequate maturity and strength can commit to the monk life for good).

If you want to do good be good while being in the society and not outside it. To understand and debate on a social issue, you have to have all of your brain cells intact, not blocked by shit load of money.
The government does not need your advice on the matter here. There is a very long process each person seeking diksha has to go through. Their family background, their responsibilities, any other provisions, the willingness of the family members, etc. are to be considered. The guru himself/herself will not allow the chela to take diksha unless the factors and criteria are met. The thing is clear,, we know what we are doing. And there is no need for us to justify to the likes of you because the practice is correct from the beginning, every step is taken carefully so don't worry.
For the answer of your question you need to go and check his background before diksha, their intellectual level etc.. then you will understand... it depends on person to person some have high IQ at young age some have less at old age...to understand things..

My respect to Jain munis and Sadhavis. I wish to ask some questions. 1. There is nothing called MOKSHA - Freedom from the cycle of life and death. We all are eternal souls playing our parts destined in the form of sanskar within our souls. No soul on earth can escape from the cycle of life and death ( the cycle of 5000 years is called one Kalpa.) Even Mahaveer/ Adideva/ Adinatha/ Jagannatha /Manu/ Bholenatha /Shankara/ Teerthankara/ Puranapurusha /Adam/ Adham Sulleman is bound in the cycle of life and death. When this is the eternal truth then why such strict penance???? 2. A swimmer can be called the best only when he or she swims in mightiest tides of Pacific Ocean . So also to win over the vices/ vikar / karmendriyas one should be in the house, in the family and in the society and do the sadhana of detachment. Leaving the world and becoming sanyasi and punishing one self with strict rules, practices will not fetch anything. When this is the eternal truth, why do Jain munis and Sadhavis punish themselves to the highest degree ?? ( In this path one cannot attain complete victory over KAMA Krodha Lobha Moha and Ahankara and one cannot win over the mind and karmendriyas.one cannot Realize the ultimate truth of shristi .one cannot Realize our two eternal father's 1. Father of all souls on earth - Lord Shiva 2 .Father of entire humanity- Adinatha). I am not challenging any body. I need an answer for my knowledge and enlightenment.
I am still confused with you first question. However, the theory of strict penance can only be understood if you have understand theory of karma as described in Jainism. Coming to your 2nd question "To practice detachment by living in daily life is like telling oneself that if I am surrounded by enemy 360 degree and they are firing at me, not a single bullet will pierce me. You cannot practice detachment with your household life. When one become jain sadhu/sadhvi they are free from all the worldly relations. Hence they won't be bounded by family responsibilites. When it comes to us, we will prioritize family incident over our sadhna and one has to as it is our duty since we have grown our own family. You cannot disown it. That is the reason they leave house."
Now coming to the portion where you say "I need an answer for my knowledge/enlightment but in both the questions you have concluded and not questioned". I will continue this discussion if it remains the discussion. You can't conclude when you are looking for answers like you mentioned "There is nothing called Moksha", "Leaving the world ....practices will not fetch anything" etc
@@jehankothari8749 I am in a meeting at this moment. Inspite of this, I am replying to you. The concept of life is " Keechad main rahoo aur Kamal pushp ke samaan rahoo". Anyhow, I liked your modesty and reply. Thank you.

There should have been some law in this...we can serve poor and needy people around us instead of this
Jain dharm ki jai
Left material world but what to eat
Being in the diamond business is an antithesis to the tenets of their faith no? It's highly materialistic and non essential, and diamond mining harms the natural environment.
I agree with dad....
Mom is not being practical...
The mother is the main culprit . Their mother has tried so much to feed the sanyasi behaviour in their brain since childhood and taught the possitivity and the good feelings to be with guru. And she clearly says that she will not accept their homecoming. But anyways, the father wants their children to return.
Insaan ke 7 Indriya Shakti.

Seems a great task! However I personally feel it's an outdated practice. There is no concept of God in Jainism!
While there isn't a concept of God as it exists in the Abrahamic traditions, since Jainism gives immense emphasis of cultivating goodness, non-violence, and love for all (barring not even the most religious non-Jain individual), it is the emergence and sustenance of these good values and elimination of bad deeds that eventually would lead those interested to become God (an omniscent, that has finished their endless cycle of bitrth and death). Further, Tirthankaras in Jainism are Jain's God because although they achieve what is mentioned above alike a lot of other capable souls (Siddhas), they even spread the message of non- violence, peace, and working hard to end the painful cycle of birth and death after acquiring omniscience through what is known as a Samovasaran (in simplified terms, a place where all living beings - humans or animals are blessed with the words of Bhagwan)..it's this and their burning desire to do good for all that makes the God (as one would call it in Abrahamic terminology or Bhagwan for Jains)
we jains dont take dikhsa to worship or impress god, there is no god in jain dharm,
god does not exist but our soul do, diksha is taken to purify soul and become siddha (not GOD).
before writing at least try to know about the topic you are about to comment.

Not having a bath 😮
In the end we want to become god😂😂😂😂
High level of brain wash.. They should understand if God has given them Human life after getting into so many other yonis then they should not waste this human life gifted by God
Do not comment out of ignorance. U need to understand Jainism and its teachings to understand monks and their life.
I feel bad
In Bangalore a person got caught up in serious criminal case and he also got booked for it and then maybe some one gave him this idea he took diksha and was like that for nearly 8 years then he came back to society and is still living a good life as a normal family person..
There may be many cases like this but bcoz this community is closed and outside influence is nearly non existent it is not easy to guess the real reasons behind this surge of late .
All jains pls go fr diksha
Kids kay oper zulam hay
Good way to escape from responsibilities
Becoming a Monk doesn't means to forsake your responsibilities but to embrace even more important responsibility to help the layman in their spiritual progress.
will you say same about adi shankracharya ,neelkanth varni?
@@dankpanda-hl3wn bro she have no knowledge of Sannyas tradition of India, these people don't know anything about about sanyas but poke their nose in every matter they don't understand, i'm hindu myself and i know about these things as i have read the works of swami vivekanad and adi guru shankaracharya, so ignore these people, these type of people are just frustrated and want reasons to criticize others, just ignore them

I Truly respect the people of this community, but Human never became a GOD. God has created us in this world to worship him. He didn’t send us to become god in this life .
The Qur'an says the purpose of our existence is to worship God.
Qur'an 20:14 "I am God; there is no other god beside Me. You shall worship Me alone, and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) to remember Me.
Quran 51:56 I did not create the jinns and the humans except to worship Me alone.
Jainism is at least 5000 year old so plz don't give us knowledge about your quran jainism simply says you to became a perfect human being
A perfect human being is God in itself
If God made this world so why 1 person is happy and other is sad
Why one is poor and one is rich there is no supreme god it's only you
You birth alone and die alone everything is in yourself but to guide there is nobody but there is one jinendra bhagwan which guide us to immortality and make us stable from this fictional world
I know u can't accept any other religion because u are Muslim but atleast have little amount of shame' thiss is not the place to show your ideology go somewherelse
The truth will be revealed by urself only when u die and stand at the opening of heaven and hell, only to know the only Almighty God is JESUS, and whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life❤️
