I do a lot of mountain biking and back country skiing and this is the first time I’ve been excited for a new iPhone since the X, and the first time I’ve ever been interested in getting an apple watch. Sat phone, wayfinding, crash, and fall detection would all be hugely valuable things to have in the backcountry, I’ve definitely had some close calls where each of these could have potentially saved me. It’ll be amazing to have all this without tons of extra expensive gear

There's a lot of features in there which can make it a bit overwhelming, plus I agree their UX isn't perfect but it's got to be a hard job to make things seamless/obvious with the sheer amount of stuff on it. I haven't seen it as an issue personally but can see why some might.

Probably the most underrated (and overdue) "feature" is the fact that finally cellular versions are getting proper international roaming ie they can be used as standalone devices when travelling rather than being downgraded to a companion gadget as soon as they're out of country of purchase. Note: 100m water resistance doesn't mean you can dive to 100m depth with the watch, it means the watch can withstand the equivalent water pressure of *sitting perfectly still* at 100m depth.
Obviously when you're swimming with a watch on your wrist it's not sitting perfectly still, and so the effective water pressure on the watch is higher. For this reason most divers wouldn't take a 100m water resistant watch anywhere near 100m depth.
The general rule of thumb watch enthusiasts use for depth ratings is:

TBH, for kite just get a garmin if you want a smart watch. You get the same sensors, you still can get notifications or whatever, there is a dedicated kiting app (so you can measure height of jumps etc), it is much more rugged, actually waterproof, not just swim proof or whatever they use in marketing and most of all, the battery life same number, but in days instead of hours. I love apple watch for office, but every time I actually go out I just switch to fenix 3 (that's 6yo by now, and still lasts 2-3 weeks between charges even with activities on a daily basis). New garmin versions have also touch screen, but it can be turned off completely so it does not get fancy with water or snow, and you have 5 buttons to navigate and do stuff, so it works perfectly in gloves, on water, underwater or everywhere.

while that's good advice you do lose functionality, the reason a screen only lock is important for the newer watch is because of the added buttons which would allow you to keep functionality high but only have the touch screen deactivated, apple watches have always been super reliant on the touch interface for functionality, rival watches like garmin have typically always been the opposite where there was no touch screen but you had 5 buttons on the watch for functionality, the newer models have the touch screen but also keep the 5 buttons meaning you can totally omit the use of the touch screen whenever you want and still retain 100 percent functionality which is perfect for some sports where you still want function but dont want accidental touches. correct me if im wrong there, im not 100 percent certain as i have not used an apple watch for years now but they do rely quite heavily on the touch interface right?

Health stats are a big deal - so with those you want a watch you can wear most of the time and gather data over time (as well as during activities obviously). When I first heard about this watch being 800 dollars I thought this was Apple creeping up prices like they did with the iPhone but now I understand the value proposition. If you're risking your life doing something and this can track you, SOS and make you findable in case something happens, price is not really your biggest concern. Curious at why Apple used the Ultra moniker and not Pro, as this is actually one of their only professional-geared products

    • @old-dream-left-behind
      @old-dream-left-behind 2 роки тому +11

I think "Pro", for Apple means "People who wants more than the average user from their devices". The pro, is always: "That thing you already know and love, but... better!". While this "Ultra" is clearly a niche product. I'll acknowledge that there is quite a wrench in my little theory, that being the "Mac Pro", which is *clearly not* made for anyone that is not an actual professional.
This watch is not made to appeal to the general audience, it's bulky, some would argue that it's quite ugly (and they would be wrong :P) and for most people, it would be completely overkill. Is an iPhone Pro Max overkill for most people who uses one? Sure, but at least, they can take advantage of the features. Your average Joe is not likely to suddenly decide to go climb a mountain. Hell, they could've named this thing "Apple Watch Elite" which would've been god awful but you know what I mean.

I got it because I was a scientist in a laboratory with all sorts of acids, bases, deleterious substances, etc around 8-16 hours per day and I wanted a way to check messages/emails, set timers for chemical reactions, and change music without touching my phone during the work day and it did that. Then I'd wear it to ultimate, hockey, soccer, or the pool after work. Then it also provided me GPS, elevation, heart rate, etc on long multi-night backpacking trips into the Canadian Rockies. And since it was black on black and round, I could wear it with a suit with no worries. No amount of nasty substances or abuse killed it, and when I finally traded it in, it had one scratch on the ring (not the screen) where I smacked it full force into a stainless steel 4 inch thick laboratory door. The practical use of this semi-rugged tech for a lot of people extends way beyond sports.

Ultra-runner checking in here. Given that industry leading 'ultra' watches (even from 2019) had normal operating battery life around 5-6 days, full GPS tracking (like used in an event) was ~30hrs, and 'low power' mode would last 30 days...
If they can show that battery life during an event lasts at least as long as a watch that is 3 years older, then I will consider it.
My 2c is that if they can get normal health tracking, good GPS, and over 30 hours of full GPS tracking then it will meet everyone's needs. If they added a feature around letting your loved ones see your minutely pinged GPS and send lightweight texts via satellite then I would be %100 sold (Gramin has a specific device to do this). OK - from the specs - Water proof to 100M. However, real time depth is only to 40M and dive computer only to 40M, and you shouldn't use it to go beyond that in terms of diving. This makes sense, beyond that risks go way way up, and even 130 feet is pretty darn deep. "Apple Watch Ultra has a water resistance rating of 100 meters under ISO standard 22810. It may be used for recreational scuba diving (with compatible third-party app from the App Store) to 40 meters and high-speed water sports. Apple Watch Ultra should not be used for diving below 40 meters. " - so this is plenty of water proofing and even plenty of real time depth guage input.

I can see myself not having to worry, is my watch fully charged or almost fully charged before I go and do one of these activities. Currently on the S6 and generally when I go to my local wake park for a few hours I need to make sure its 80% minimum or more. Also the new button will be cool to answer calls while in water (how you mentioned sweat water etc. messes with the screen), I assume you will be able to answer calls with it, which, if you’re surfing wakeboarding etc. sometimes is almost impossible to do with a regular Apple Watch

The Ultra feels like an in-between of the normal Apple watch and something more serious like a Garmin Epix. I feel like it's a step up for those that take sports and activities a little more seriously but not too seriously.
Is there an Apple heart rate monitor with accelerometers and is able to record data without the watch? Does the Ultra track SPO2, RHR and VO2 max accurately? Can you switch activities while in an activity? Does it link to Zwift and gym equipment via BT? Can it take a future activity in your calendar and build a personalised training plan to ensure your training is sufficient for the race? Can you import a gpx and mark aid stations and waypoints, check elevation profiles and build custom race screens? Will it wirelessly connect with scales to record weight and other body metrics to make sure it knows accurate data to calculate race paces/threshold pace etc? Can it record bouldering and climbing accurately with graphs on what routes you've done along with grades and fall detection etc? What about treks using GPS over several days on a single charge? Does it have ski resort maps baked in of all routes? and all golf courses?
So many unanswered questions (looking forward to reviews) and all stuff that Garmin already does along with a massive boat load of other stuff. I hope Apple really put some serious time and effort in to this side of things as Garmin needs some competition so we the consumer end up with even better products, but I'd be very surprised if the Ultra comes anywhere near for its first iteration (fingers crossed though).

Most divers are only recreationally accredited, with tech divers (I.e. those of us certified to dive beyond recreational limits) making up a very small proportion of the total market. It therefore doesn’t make sense for Apple to even bother rating this beyond 40m really. That said, with the WR rating, I highly doubt it’ll fail if it does go beyond 40m but it’ll be interesting to see what the dive app tells you. Sapphire crystal is a must can’t even consider the other ones or it will get damaged immediately. I do work out so that part would be good in the fall and crash protection is helpful. I've never wanted an Apple Watch before. I've been on the other real smart watch platform, but the Ultra made me go wow, because of the 100 WR, the 40m diving capability, the integrated software, and the recent test showing Apple has nailed sleep tracking and HRM better than any other smartwatch maker. Apple seem serious in their approach and in my view they strive for accuracy and dependability. I've used other smartwatches and while they have a lot of sensors the software is lagging behind Apple quite substantially. Now, Apple is bringing killer features in addition. Do I need this watch? No. Do I want it? Yes. Unfortunately it comes with the requirement of an iPhone which doesn't seem that appealing. If the Ultra was sold as a stand alone I would get one.

Also recently I had a bad experience trying to interface with the local files on a Samsung phone using a PC… now I feel like it’s easier to use an iPhone with a PC.

Hey my friend love your content! Diver here, In the review you say "theoretically dive to 100m" in fact this watch is rated for 40m which is about 130 feet, dont get me wrong most of dives are about 100 feet max so this is perfectly capable for casual diving but I have been past 130 feet so this excellent for a watch but just something to think about. Maybe look into this though, they say this is WR100 rated which means 5ATM of pressure rating which translates to 50M. So there is a discrepancy between them saying 40m approved then also saying WR100.

Well since the Apple Watches have had the Water mode for a long time already, I can only assume that an update would bring that shortcut to the orange button. This stops the water from messing with the touch screen as far as I know. I feel like the Ultra really sells a dream more than a useful watch. You're buying this for the same reason you might buy other cool gear for any sports, which you end up using once or twice. Also, I feel like it is too big for many, including my own wrists. Other story when having something like a wetsuit on, but as you said, that's only for a maximum of a few hours a day. The rest of the time it would just look bulky and stupid, especially if you're known to be or look like someone who is not really into extreme sports...

I think you're underestimating the amount of people that actually do not use an AW because it can't keep up with certain activities. I used to have one and I liked it, but I couldn't use it for long endurance events which were 5 hours plus (a normal hike or bike ride) without worry, it didn't last an Ironman, it was annoying to use in the swimming pool because of the lack of buttons, the GPS accuracy when swimming was poor, it was difficult to use when skiing because I needed to take my gloves off all the time. In general the lack of physical buttons was the biggest annoyance.
You may be right that most people buy the dream, but for me, this is a step in the right direction and I may even consider an AW again over the Fenix 6 I currently use and love. There is definitely a big crowd of endurance athletes that might feel the same.

It's still going to take a while for apple to really compete with Garmin, especially on the battery front. My Venu Sq music (about $210 in US) lasts around 4 to 5 days with a couple of activities in there, and it's nowhere near the battery life of the 955 ($500 triathlon watch - 15 to 20 days with solar charging) or the Fenix 7 solar ($799) which has 18 to 22 days in normal smartwatch mode with solar, or 57 to 173 days in battery saver watch mode.
