  • This old weed whacker won’t start.
The Stihl FS66 came on the market in 1984, and stayed there until 1993. Although it is significantly less powered than today’s models, it beats them all in reliability. This unit belongs to my mother in law, and I was surprised when she asked to borrow my FS111. As it turned out, she said her FS66 was very hard to start. I started by changing out the old gasoline to some Aspen2 pre-mixed 50:1 gasoline. That alone made it easier to start, but I also cleaned the air filter, spark plug, and spark arrestor. I also have the entire engine a bath in degreaser and brakleen. After that, it fired up on the first pull.

Good morning Stan!! Yep, I try to put fuel stabilizer in any gas engine left over the winter. Makes a big difference come spring.

The old UFA purple gas doesn’t quite have the necessary shelf life to make it through the winter.

I have just got my Dad’s FS66. I have taken it to a Stihl dealer, who are replacing the Carb. Hopefully it will run for many more years. It would have been a shame to just scrap it.
I learned alot from your video.

Great work Stan! I would have like to have seen the part where you worked on the spark arrestor.

I know how to spray brakleen in a carburetor. It’s all fingers crossed after that.

Stan you couldn't live on mechanic wages. Keep doing what your doing. Some day You Tube will pay better than being a mechanic

Judging by how greasy that machine was, it looks like the in-laws were trying to run it on used deep fryer oil. It runs amazing now.

сьогодні отримали таку косу на ремонт. Виготовлено в Японіі. Хто робив для компаніі STIHL цей інструмент в 1987 році? Поршень 31 мм., схоже на SHINDAIWA . Потрібно знайти поршневу групу.

Stihl doesn’t disclose who manufactures their engine components. Most believe that the majority of parts are manufactured in China, and then everything gets assembled in one of Stihl’s assembly facilities.

My hands got dirty just looking at it. 30 years of never seeing an aerosol can and a rag.

That is NOT a brush cutter, that is a trimmer,. Brush cutters have a saw blade or metal blade equivalent.

Feel free to search the Stihl FS66 brush cutter online. You’ll find that it is indeed a brush cutter. It has the capability to switch between cutting heads.
