I purchased and trained my GSD to be a family, people friendly social dog. In my home the dog will go on alert barking aggressively when a stranger approaches. This is all I need to reach for my personal protection if needed.

My GSD lived with us in Inner-City Detroit in a sometimes dangerous neighborhood; she had no training-I always said she trained me- but I knew from experience that she would always protect me and my family. When my wife and I argued, my GSD was never aggressive towards her but would come and sit by me. She was very watchful of our baby at all times. I knew that if anything went down she would protect the baby first me second than my wife. My wife and she got along beautifully at most times but, and I think this is typical of GDS, she had a different but always protective relationship with everybody in the family. I used to loaned her to my neighbors to walk to the stores and just say please go with them, and she would trot up to them, and be very protective of whomever I designated. Her size and demeanor, she was very large for a female 95pounds, Were a deterrent in themselves. She had a very sweet and serious personality and was very gentle overall,, she was especially loving towards children. But on a few occasions when it was called for she was extremely fierce.

Well said ! My female 2 year old shepherd echo does the same thing. If I let her out when an intruder or Stanger is present she would bark aggressively and circle the shit out of them. Other than that I'm not holding my breath for her to actually bite. (She knows "get em" and will latch but idk about under pressure situations.) She is pretty timid but my goal with her is to buy time and deter not defend. 🤙

The implication of this question is that it’s about the GSD breed. No breed of dog will truly defend their owner in a life or death situation, unless they e been trained to do so. A lot of dogs, of many breeds will “defend” their owner of barking is the only thing that needs to be done…and in fact, most of the time, that is the only thing that needs to be done. However, when that person, loaded up on meth, breaks into your house, and it is loud and chaotic, barking is not going to be enough. Very few untrained dogs will seriously engage that person in a fight unless they have been trained to do so. When this gentleman goes on, in a bit of a sarcastic way, about the helper yelling and pretending to hit the dog while on the bite like it’s overkill, it isn’t. I was the helper, the guy in the bite suit for 15 years, and it’s no joke. Whether it’s a home invasion, attempted kidnapping or whatever, you have to train these dogs to be confident when things go bad. I had 3 Czech german shepherds, fully trained. They were the sweetest dogs with our kids, kind, very clear headed, and beautiful. But, when I gave the command, or when there was a legitimate threat, they flipped the switch and were unstoppable. I’ve seen so many dogs that owners brought to be tested for protection. German shepherds, forties, dobermans, pits, etc. almost all would bark at a threat. When that threat became serious though, none would actually protect, without training. It’s nothing against the breed, or the dog…they just have to taught how, and to have the confidence needed to engage. If you want a dog that is a good deterrent, almost any dog can do that. If you want a serious protection dog, you have to find the right dog and have the right training. Not every dog can do that. Not every GSD, or Boerbel, or Malinois can do it. It’s good genetics in a good breed, with good training and a responsible owner.

The answer is simple. 99.9999% of people are not trained in special ops or martial arts but that does not mean these people will not or do not know how to defend their family members if attacked.

Yes it does. It doesn’t mean they won’t want to, but it doesn’t mean they know how to either. I’ve done protection training for 15 years, which is not that long, but it’s a bit. I see dogs of every “protection” type and although there are some dogs that are confident, that don’t backdown, very few dogs know instinctively how to fight a human. That person that breaks into your house may be loaded up on some drug and not even feel pain. A nip in the butt is not going to be enough. I’m not military or special ops at all, I just love being the guy in the bite suit, and I love dogs. It’s not about repelling from a helicopter with your dog, it’s about knowing your dog will purposely engage in a fight, when he or she may be getting hit, or stabbed, or shot, and they’re still fighting to protect you. A person cannot just assume their dog will do that unless they e been trained on how to do it.

I received my German Shepard when I was 10 years old. We were inseparable. Fast forward 7 years, I had several school mates over to our farm for a football match. I shut my Shepard in the coal house in fear he would take offense to my being tackled or other violent acts. Lo and behold my mother opened the coal house door to get a bucket of coal and my dog was off like a bullet heading straight towards those guys that just tackled me. His ears were back and his hackles were up. He had visited with every guy there many times over the years yet still felt the need to protect me from them. Yes, I believe German Shepards will protect their owners.

@@ron7687 yes I’m sure he was very interested in making sure you were ok. Not to be picky, but the fact that his hackles were up means he was nervous. I’ve made a few posts on this video and I’ve had fully trained protection GSDs. A trained, confident dog doesn’t seek a fight. In fact, they don’t look at it as a fight as much as a job. Their job is to protect their family, or that briefcase, or truck, or whatever. They have been trained how to do that job, and if trained correctly, they have a ton of confidence in their ability to do that job. That does not take away their ability to love, and play, and relax and just be a companion.

in addition to body language dogs can actually smell stress, fear, etc chemicals given off by humans (both from you and any other potential enemy), so if they have been properly socialized they can usually choose an appropriate response. due to their innate intelligence i would say this even more likely with gsd's.

My beloved female AKC Black and Tan 100 pound German Shepherd absolutely saved me from a violent Pit-bull attack! I never knew she would actually put herself between me and danger because she was always a docile gentle affectionate giant.
Her AKC registered name was Porsche Princess Von Merritt. I was just riding my mountain bike while she ran along side on my left like she always did after I worked 10 hours a day after work. I barely seen the attack coming and was listening to my head phones when this raging pit-bull (who I later found out was a Detroit rescue from a pit-bull fighting ring) came running to attack me!
Porsche and I were coming back home from a 5 mile bike ride so she was tired and so was I.
She still managed to go even faster than my fast bike speed and took a beating for me! That pit-bull never even touched me because Porsche was so fast that she ran around the front of my bike attacking that pit-bull by putting herself between me and it! I never saw her act like this before! I could not believe it!
She really saved me! No doubt about it!
Porsche endured a bite to her neck and face for me but she was ok Thank God!
I wish Porsche was still alive. She died years later of bloat. I wish I had her stomach sewn to her side when she was spayed but I didn't know about bloat in German Shepherds because she was my first German Shepherd ever and I was not familiar with that specific health condition!
She would have lived much longer and I wish I knew what I didn't know then. She was the Best and Most Beautiful German Shepherd I have ever seen to this day! I hope she is in Heaven when I get there for sure!
I appreciate German Shepherd Man and wish I knew about him and was watching him sooner!
God Bless "The German Shepherd Breed" and "German Shepherd Man!"
    Sincerely, Ron Merritt in Michigan

Your dog doesn't need to be a trained ATTACK DOG to protect you. I had two brothers German Shepard Malamute mixes who would protect the family by putting themselves between us and anyone they thought was giving out a bad vibe. Of course that didn't often happen but the dogs did it naturally with zero protection training and their barking and teeth display worked.

I have seen the videos of pro dog trainers claiming if your dog isn’t trained they won’t protect you. They go in the house with a bite suit and act like a burglar. These videos aren’t a 100% depiction of what your dog will do in a real situation. Dogs can detect when a person is nervous, anxious or scared through an individual’s body language, movements, and even smells the persons body is emitting. The truth is some breeds are bred with a protective instinct and with training will protect you in any situation or environment. Other dogs are not bred with this instinct and no matter how much training they receive they will never protect you. I own two GSDs both working line dogs from the Czech Republic. Neither of my Shepherds are trained in personal protection. However one day while playing with my dogs in a field a stranger ran up to me and my wife from behind. Before my wife and I noticed what was happening my two shepherds used teamwork to keep the guy away from us and they also prevented the guy from being able to run away. They worked as a team and contained the threat. The best way to explain this is to think about yourself. You perhaps are not a trained professional fighter or maybe have never been in a fight in your life. However if someone were to threaten the life of one of your family members you would fight to the death to protect them. Shepherds are a breed that have the same mentality.

I agree with German Shepherd Man that most GSDs will protect their owners in most situations, but need specialized training in most cases to defend their owners from attackers. I think it is important to differentiate between protect and defend. I believe that most GSDs will instinctively protect their owners by barking and portraying a defensive posture that deters most aggressors in most situations. In the event that their protective posture doesn't deter an aggressor and the aggressor actually attempt to hurt you, at that time is when the GSD has to switch from a protective mode to a defender mode and become the aggressor themselves. This is the point where most untrained dogs will be seen to back down because they don't necessarily know what they need to do when faced with full on force. Some dogs will have the natural instincts to fight and bite, but many will back down at this point because they haven't been trained in how to deal with those situations.

I have a fence and close neighbors and they can come and talk to me and even put an arm on the fence but they all know not to reach across. When I was 12 I had an after school job of walking a friend of my mother's two German Shepherds a few times a week. Although the dogs were purchased to deter thieves from the antiques business, they were not protection trained at all. One afternoon I was walking the 9 year old white GSD and a classmate joined me. At some point, she shoved me - I think I'd said something vaguely funny or something and it was a shove of "oh get away with you" type thing. The dog however did not see this and just saw the shove - he raced up the hill and did a flying leap, grabbing her arm and flung her against a car, snarling and growling. He never broke the skin, but he sure did give her a warning.

Our family had the most beautiful German Shepherd called Jason. He was absolutely stunning and had the most beautiful nature. That is until someone made the mistake of breaking into our home around 3 a.m one morning. Jason would always sleep on the upstairs landing which was were access to all of the bedrooms where. That was his spot each and every night as if he wanted to be there to look after the family. When this guy broke in we heard the deepest growl from him and then a rush of him running downstairs and he attacked this guy who was screaming his head off. Jason only let go of this guys arm when my dad said “Jason, leave”. Now this was not a good night for this guy because he also broke into a home that not only had Jason and my Dad in it but also my 2 older brothers and I who were ranging from mid to late teens. We may have accidentally punched and kicked him a little and it was brilliant. The cops came and took the clown away badly beaten. Sadly Jason passed away at only 5 and a half years old with cancer but he is still remembered as the best dog we ever had. I loved him and to this day probably 30 years or so later he sits proudly in my home in a wonderful framed picture. He was truly a one off and I still miss him all these years later.

It's a good question and a good answer. I have 2 GSDs, a 6 yr old and a 2 yr old. Both are very noisy if people approach our property. That's good enough for me. But...there was a situation back when my oldest was 4 yrs old where a Cane Corso that Baron knew and played with went up to my grandson (who Baron loves more than life itself) to get petted. Baron covered about 20 yards and knocked the Corso over and was about to get serious when I got there and pulled him back. No injuries, thankfully but there would've been. Short answer...an untrained GSD absolutely will defend their owner according to threat level. I've only seen a few that wouldn't engage. This is where breeding is key. A "farm shepherd" may or may not. A properly bred dog will. Love your channel. Cheers.

I have to disagree. So many people, and you are probably not one of them, think that a protection trained dog can’t handle noise, or kids running around etc. I had 3 fully protection trained Czech border patrol GSD’s. These were big boned, big headed, black sable dogs strong and very intimidating, but we also had 3 boys and their friends over all the time. They were playing football, yelling, wrestling all the time. This dogs always knew what was going on but they were never trigger any of it. Along with the training comes the ability for these dogs to understand a threat. I remember one time I had my big male at a county fair type thing. He was on leash and we were just walking. It was crowded, kids were running everywhere and it was loud and smelled like fried food. Out of nowhere Savo was alerting on this man that was standing next to this woman. I couldn’t see that anything was going on, but he was barking at that guy, saliva spitting out…something wasn’t right. I had him on a 6 foot lead and I asked if everything was ok. The guy just said yes, moved away from the woman and walked off. The woman started crying and thanking me because the guy was trying to take her purse. I didn’t see it, but Save could feel it, or smell it, or whatever they do with that 6th sense. She was very grateful. It was his ability to detect a threat that made him fire up on that guy. That may be instinctive, but to know how to handle it was training.

Sargent is such a well behaved dog. I wholeheartedly believe my gsd would protect me, I have two of them, both I trained with the help you a trainer (basic obedience) cause I knew nothing about dog training, then I built on the dogs skills. My dogs I got for my husband but they ended up attached to me (they love my husband though) - don’t like it when my husband ‘play’ wrestles with me, they get in the middle 😂 & try to block my husband. I am a novice on GSD's but I totally agree because I see those same actions from ours. We have a 14 mo old who will alert whenever someone is walking by the house which is quite often because we have neighbors that walk twice a day. So there is a lot of traffic. He will stand there between them and the house all fluffed up looking extremely intimidating until they get out a couple of hundred yard down the road. I have not trained him but I wish he would recognize those same people who walk by everyday. He scares the crap out of them. Im glad he is about 75 feet off the road.

Protection training is an instrument used to control that instinct upon command.

Yeah and no. You’ll be surprised actually. Now will they alert you? Yes more than likely. However, no one is going to let you just bite on them. So when and if I keep moving and fight back picks him up slam him etc. They’re going to come off the bite. Maybe even run off due to stress. I train a lot of dogs and under stress unless they’re taught they run away and hope you don’t come near them honestly. If you only want and need to be alerted about a threat then you don’t need training. If you want your dog to jump into action no matter the situation then I highly advise it. Just depends on what you want from your dog. Peace and respect ✊🏿 💯💯💯

Here's a very cute example....my poodle (yes, poodle ! 😄) chased the garbage man out of the yard (yes, back in the days of garbage collection lol) because he got too close to where I was sitting. My dog gave him a warning growl, he didn't listen and then she tore after him, chasing him out of the yard. He was screaming " get that dog away from me, I'm going, I'm going" ..... I called my dog once, she immediately stopped and calmly walked back to me and sat down. "What a good girl!!" .... please note, she didn't bite the guy but really gave him an attitude adjustment. It happened so fast too, she was more aware of the situation than I was at that time......our beloved animals are the very best, I've always believed they are our guardian angels on earth..... peace and love to everyone 🙏🐾💕🕊️

You are right. To be able to fully protect the owner, the GSD must be trained differently, not using usual pet dog training methods. It must be able to rapidly develop prey drive, in matter of seconds, and act independently. But we really don't want our pets to lunge in prey drive! It's too dangerous. However, any GSD loyal to the owners will ASSIST in some way in defending its pack (as a pack animal by nature, the GSD sees the owner and owner's family as members of the pack to which it belongs).

I don't know if he would've protected me in any situation but I had a high content wolf dog that killed a Rottweiler that had been sicced on us. It wasn't even a full blown dog fight until the Rottie got around Rex and bit me, then he turned into a different animal, brutally savage is the only way I can describe it. I was hurt and couldn't get Rex off until it was too late. Thankfully there was never another situation that I saw that side of him again. He was not taught any kind of protection that I know of (I got him when he was 5). He got along with other dogs even after this incident. He was very protective of children (any child and very gentle with them) but he was not too fond of strange adults. That was 30 years ago and I've had one other that was similar to him, she was a German Shepherd. I love all my animals but none of the others were even close to these two.

The trainers also said that she was not really good for protection so we stopped going. Nonetheless, I've had two incidents where she stepped up to protect. There was a pool guy that she hated, later I found out he was on the run. During the next incident someone under the influence of hard drugs tried to come into my yard and she sniffed him out and would not let him come in further into my property. She is the perfect dog. Not sure why this was recommended to me, but we had a GSD mix when I was a toddler, and it would lay down it's life for me and in multiple occassions bit people who got too close to me as a baby. It would run to my room when I cried as a baby and wake my parents up. She was a good dog. My current working line GSD I imagine would do the same, but we've done some hobbyist protection type of training. I have a flirt pole and bite sleeve, and my dogs bite and bark on command. They're extremely high drive dogs(other dog is a pit mix), and I don't think anyone would survive for more than a few seconds in my home uninvited. But they are far from professional protection dogs, and doubt they'll ever be in a situation where they'd need to be.

Last fall when he was about 15 months old we were playing in my fenced in back yard when a new neighbors fully grown pit bull scaled my fence and charged me while my boy was doing his business behind my garden shed approximately 50 feet away... but he came to my rescue and sent that Pit bull scrambling to get back over that fence.. Our church shepherd puppy of 10 months is friendly towards kids. We went to a park recently and about 20 kids all came up and wanted to pet her and she was eager to be pet. Super friendly toward everyone. This one boy loved staying around her the longest and she was super friendly. We walk away for awhile and come back and the boy was there to pet her again but then this time our puppy whimpered and did a high screeching small bark towards the boy (normally at home if she hears something outside she has a deep and low bark). So we removed her so she wouldn’t unexpectedly potentially bite the boy. But why would she have been so friendly towards the boy and others and then all of a sudden was uncomfortable with him around? She also does this around the kids of one family in our church. I’m assuming that’s because she’s smelling some type of animal she doesn’t like since they have farm animals.

It is really hard to have a good read on this without having seen it. I have two major suspicions though: one the kids were ones who pretend to like dogs but actually want to do things the dogs dislike or are painful and the dog was indicating that. The other is she especially liked them, my young male will whine/yip/bark when we go to places he loves, or visit his grandparents, my training teacher, and a couple of my neighbors. He does something similar but louder and for longer if I hand his leash to someone else and walk away when we aren't at home.

They will also bark if a young lad creeps up waving a stick or a bottle and being aggressive toward you etc however without the rite dog or a lot of pro training your dog will NOT be able to properly FIGHT when put into a situation where a very strong aggressive attacker is actually hell bent on hurting the owner or the dog. Under severe sustained violence and pain being caused almost all dogs will not have the levels of defence drive courage, confidence or training to engage in a real life fight in a really violent situation where your life is in danger! The real question should be....Will the owner of a GSD defend their dog?? ...my girl Jesse is intimidating looking enough and people sometimes cross the street if they are walking in my direction..she does exactly what sargent does when someone comes to my property. Lets people know she’s watching and then lets me know someone is here...i train her to be friendly and social...she goes everywhere with me and is friendly to all...But she knows who to keep an eye on!!! And I didn’t train her to do that...If you want a Dog for “protection” you sure better be careful and have your insurance paid up....also if your dog goes after and hurts the wrong person ..are you going to keep the dog or drop it off at a shelter.....my advice is to socialize and love gods gift and if ya need protection...Take Karate lessons!!!!!

Thanks for all you do GSM...I enjoy watching all your videos I learn a great deal from you And I tell many many people about you and your videos even if they own other breeds...In my line of work I go to many houses that have dogs and a lot of people are frustrated with their dogs behavior. I always tell them to watch you!

My gsd is just a family dog but he inserts himself in between me and perceived danger. He will paw and bark and bite the arm of the aggressor and he will lay on top of me if all else fails and keep the aggressor at bay. All on his own just with instinct and no instruction. He does not give up he does no run away. That's just during pillow fights. I'm curious how he would react to real danger. 😉

I'm no do expert. I just have extensive experience in raising working dogs as a hobby. It's like saying, will I be able to defend against an attack in the street because I have good genetics and look buff? the answer is no! YOU NEED TO BE TAUGHT HOW TO FIGHT. The word defend is subjective. Even the best bred dogs genetically exhibit a willingness to show a drive in barking, standing their ground and not backing down, THAT'S 100% GENETIC. I've seen dogs buckle underneath pressure who had weak nerves. Nothing you can do about that. Assuming you have a dog with solid nerves, WHO'S BEEN HANDLED CORRECT AS A PUPPY AND NOT HAD BAD HABITS TAUGHT TO IT. One can use their basic instincts to guard and protect and take it a step further and learn the art of 1-agressive deterrent 2-

I’m not so sure if my 100 pound female would protect me. She’s got a big bark but I don’t know if she would bite anybody or anything. At the dog park she completely avoids conflict even when other dogs are pushing her buttons. Sometimes males will try to mount her and she manages to get away. I don’t want her to fight, but I wish she had the confidence to snap at them or otherwise tell them to back off. I like to think she’d help me out if I was fighting somebody off.
I’ve had the opportunity to take her to a farm with some livestock. With sheep and calves she is 100% confident and focused. If I had stock of my own I think she would be a good herding dog and protector.

i think you should make a video about the VAST differences between guarding and protection gsd's - as a public service announcement. it seems, by reading some of the posts here, that misunderstandings are very common. i also suspect 95% of people who say they have, want, or need a protection gsd in fact do not have, want, or need one. in the case of an accidental bite, having a protection dog exposes you to legal liability and puts your dog at risk to be euthanized.
while a gsd family pet can be a great guard dog, the words gsd pet and protection dog should NEVER be used together.
i have worked with many breeds of dog (and gsd's in particular) for many years - again, for the majority of owners who responsibly socialize, train, bond, and care for their gsd, the dogs' natural GUARDING instincts, not protection training, will be more than sufficient to deter the opportunistic bad guy.

Well I have 4 dogs, lab, mastiff, and male and female gsd. My male is a whole different level of dog. I always tell my family when I go out,if you find my body, you'll find my male gsd body too. Or at least his servery injured body! Ya never know total, till the time comes. When I go shooting, he's the one dog that will stay out of my fj,and be out trying to get near me,and seams to get more excited when shooting........but at same time,he's scared of a gas powered weed trimer?😄

GSDs are alert dogs anyway. Their most powerful tool and also basic instinct is their voice.
They're not attack dogs (and yeah the difference between an attack dog and a personal defense dog trained for military situations like described at the begining is slim).
I'm sure some can be trained to work like that by a very skilled trainer. But its not the most natural thing to them.
Also i'd argue that you really don't want a "real" protection dog anyway in everyday life. Your dog barking is more than enough to intimidate a burglar or mugger as most of them are cowards looking for easy "preys" so not only there's a high chance they'll be easily intimidated by it, even if they're not the noise might attract unwanted attention. In the unlikely case its not enough to dissuade them, do you actually want your dog to risk himself wrestling with some junkie on PCP just to save your T.V or something? I don't.

The first thing any protection dog trainer is going to do is see if the dog is willing to bite. If it's not enthusiatic about biting it's not a good candidate for protection work.

if you mistreat the dog, then it will not protect the owner, or it will, but in the wrong way, it will be aggressive and not socialized. in order for a dog to protect the family, all it needs is early socialization, love, walks and runs, and as such it will protect the family one hundred percent, without even one segment of those listed it will NOT protect its family one hundred percent. if it is still trained, then it is a weapon for which the owners should be mentally, emotionally and socially capable in order to have such a trained dog. so I'm surprised that some trainer has stated that he will not protect the family, who is that trainer, he is simply not for the job of dog trainer

A protection dog,or any dog depends on 1. Pack drive, 2. Prey drive 3. Will...a balanced property bred dog is of utmost importance. A pressured dog that never experienced pain, or pressure during training will often times fail their owner..this goes for pd K9 aswell..I have seen a 35000 Belgian malinois give up,cower and then run between the handlers legs after being struck...I have also seen ppd not protect their owner because the "bad guy" did not have a bite suit on ....so please do not be fooled there is a huge difference between deterance and actual protection....and it takes religion, pressure and obedience

My shepherd isn't a protection dog but a homeless man frettened me once and my shepherd reacted to him.
I have two idiots giving me abuse in the street and my shepherd started barking at them so they will let worn them off.
A man come behind my wife and my dog started barking because he his approach was fretting. Hmmm

My girl, Lady protects me just by the fact that she's a GSD & ginormous. When a potential perp sees this senior, single female out walking, believe me, they think twice about approaching me. I've had a number of people (all men) ask to pet her. Both Lady & I refuse. She doesn't want strangers being around her, let alone touching her.
