    9:19 Claussen is not heated to seal them; instead, they are fermented cold throughout the process to maintain their crunchiness. These are my favorite brand of pickles and the only ones I will eat.

      Same, my go to got bought out by Nallys and then shut down. I went on a pickle journey for a replacement and landed with them.

    The first time I had a Grillo's pickle was about 13 years ago. Owner Travis was trying to expand into the retail market and he brought in 36 jars of half sours into our butcher shop in southern NH. He asked us to sample one jar to customers and call us when we sold out. We called him about 30 minutes later...customers loved them, and they were a local brand. King's Hawaiian bought the brand a couple years ago. But, they are still made locally - and they still taste the same. Grillo's pickles rock!

      They were my go-to but I keep getting jars of the dill spears that don't have the crunch that drew me to the brand in the first place. Dunno what's going on but this keeps happening regardless of which grocery store I'm buying them from 😭 I want my snappy pickles back!

      @@TheDriedfrogpills this happens sometimes if they sit for too long or are close to their expiration date i fear. i think that the mini wholes are less likely to get the sog in my opinion.

    Pro tip, don’t eat non refrigerated pickles. Even shelf stable ones have better texture when cold.

    I swear that Vlassic used to be crunchy. It was in recent years that they became soft and stopped being great.

      There was a Claussen commercial in 1992 that showed "Competitor Pickle" was floppy and uncrunchy. Vlassic filed a complaint over misleading advetrising. Claussen had lawyers snap over 150 different brands of pickles over the course of two days and ultimately prevailed before a tribunal. So, that's at least 32 years of flaccid Vlassic.

      I blame Conagra for the change. Same thing with Milwaukee Pickles; they were their own company until the early 90's, then Vlasic bought them.

    The cloudy Polish pickles were "ogórki kiszone" (lit. "soured cucumbers"), which are lactofermented, similar to Sauerkraut. Different process than pickles (which would be "ogórki konserwowe") and an acquired taste!

    Best pickles ever, once I eat all the pickles, I eat the garlic slices. And I rarely ever throw out the juice either. When I have a couple spears, I pour a little shot of the juice. Only thing I toss is the grape leaves but I bet they are tasty too.

    I keep my fermented pickles crunchy by placing two white oak leaves (one on the bottom, one at the top) in my 2 quart fermenting jars. The tannins in the oak leaves helps keep the pickles crisp. It is said that you can use horseradish leaves or fresh grape leaves for the same effect. Mass produced pickles use chemicals like alum or calcium hydroxide to try and keep the pickle crisp.

    My current favorite pickle is the Majestic (Mount Olive spin-off) Hot Sauce pickle. They’re super crunchy and snappy, and just hot enough. Also, Grillo’s Hot Pickle De Gallo

    I absolutely despise cucumbers. Don't like the flavor, don't like the texture. But give me a pickle? Will eat those day in day out. To me an unpickled cucumber is a crime against humanity. Which i will admit seems odd, but it's just how i am. Texture of a pickle, just fine. Texture of an unpickled cucumber, hate it. Doesn't make any sense, but there you go.
    And i like all kinds of pickles. Dill, hot, gherkins, bread and butter, kosher, you name it.

    My brother, when he was about 7 or 8, ate an entire gallon jar of whole dill pickles in a couple days! Of course, he loved green apples, too. We rarely got ripe apples off our tree. A sour food monster!

    I spent a lot of time with my grandparents as a kid and one of my favorite memories is the first time I finished off the final pickle of the jar. I was probably 6 and my grandpa busted out two martini glasses, filled em up with the pickle juice from the empty jar for us and I, to this day, have never felt more fancy

    The bubbles you saw in the Ba Tampte pickles is just a natural part of the fermentation process. All of the fermented pickles had bubbles at some point but it has usually stopped before you buy them. Vinegar is the quicker and easier way to make pickles (especially mass produced), hence why most of them use vinegar.

    I love Farmhouse Ridge Atomic Pickles. I like to eat/drink half of it then add some smashed garlic cloves, peppers, and a couple slices of lemon and a half a cup of lemon juice and let it marinate overnight.

    I don’t get the Bread&Butter hate. It is its own thang in context to a typical sour pickle, but I do find them tasty.
    Also surprised there wasn’t as much emphasis on the vinegar versus fermented pickle formats.

      I like Bread&Butter specifically for burgers. I think dill is better for deli sandwiches and things like potato salad

    Claussen is a clear standout in the easy to find mass produced options. By far the best taste and texture available at most retailers.

    Claussen whole mini dill pickles is where it's at! Seems like they are getting tougher and tougher to find, but I always buy 2-3 jars when they're available. Definitely tops at our house!

    I have noticed that there was a pickle jar in the video u haven tried on camera. The german ones from kühne, which are not the best german pickles, but i was just wondering if there was a reason because i saw them in the transition when Ilana left but then u tried the hottie bites and the german ones never appeared again? I would have loved to know how they fare copared to amarican pickles.

    My mom’s pickles had fizz inside. Crispy as well but Possibly a slight botulism problem but we loved it! And no one died.

    So I looked up what makes a pickle kosher. Turns out it's just no additives. That makes most pickles outside the USA kosher, lol.
    My Polish grandparents made their own and they were delish.

    your take on indie pickles is absolutely correct. My favorite brand is Don Hermann and Sons, and I've never been able to find them outside northern ohio

    I have pickles I picked up perusing around the Amish paradise known as Ava, Illinois and found THE BEST bread and butter pickles in the world at a small Amish store there. Oh. My. Lawd. Can I mail you pickles?
