  • What Went Wrong?... At WCW StarrCade 1999, the main event was WCW Champion Bret "Hitman" Hart vs Bill Goldberg. Late in the match, Goldberg landed a side kick on Bret's head so hard he caused a concussion that would eventually see Bret retire from the ring a few weeks later.
But was it just the kick to Bret's head? What about the elbow Goldberg landed earlier in the match? What about the Figure Four Leg Lock on the ring post that Goldberg failed to assist Bret with that saw the Hitman smack his head on the ringside mats. What about the nearly dozen matches that Bret had against the likes of Ric Flair, Sid, Chris Benoit, Jerry Flynn and, finally, Kevin Nash. If Bret had taken time off, would he have recovered and have been able to carry on wrestling?
Over the years, Bret Hart has become more and bitter bitter and vocal of his disdain for Bill Goldberg. All Goldberg can do is apologise, and for Bret that isn't enough, so Goldberg on the Who Killed WCW documentary finally had enough and declared that he's done saying sorry. Who's in the right, who's in the wrong, and ultimately, are they both taking themselves too seriously that they can never get past what happened on that fateful pay per view?

I think most of the blame goes to concussions not being treated seriously enough in wrestling or pro sports at the time.
People say Bret shouldn't have worked until he healed but if you are old enough to remember 2000 concussions were considered a minor injury and you were labeled "soft" if you didn't "play through the pain".

Hell, when I had 5 concussion in the 2003 (deployment), it was “damn, you popped your cherry!” To “you’re just battle hardened now, nothing will faze you.” It wasn’t until 2008 that I was told I needed to get it checked out. Crazy to think there are probably millions of people that struggle today, because of how we used to look at concussions.

Nah, bullshit on the "soft" excuse not when he claims he was so out of it after the match and that he felt like there was something so wrong with him that he needed to see the doctor. Then allows according to Bret WcW to talk him into working for several weeks and Bret's story claims they told him don't worry about it, they'll take care of you, they'll be gentle with you.
ESEPCIALLY when he constantly cries about how WcW wasn't doing anything with him, they weren't treating him right etc. how he hated every minute he was there

Absolutely so much of the hate for goldberg is misdirected. It was the upper management that pushed him so hard after a short time at the wcw power plant. Eric bischoff admitted it. They gave him squash matches to hide the fact he was so green and didn't know how to do a longer match. They should have developed him more before pushing him as a top guy. Yet what many people do not understand is the moment you step into that ring no matter how well you planned things out anything can happen. It is "You're" choice and if you cannot accept that you can get hurt in the ring you should not be in that ring.

Except Goldberg wasn't reckless, Bret got the concussion from this figure four above concrete, ht thought he was too good to not be injured. Then he does a series of matches including a hardcore match against Terry Funk. The end of his career is on him. It's funny people blame Goldberg for being reckless, but we're supposed to call people like Kawada demi-Gods despite him dropping people on their neck every single match to the point Misawa's spine was holding by a thread.

4:05 Bret said in his book, WCW's doctors essentially brushed off the concussion, told him to take some painkillers and he'd be fine. So WCW kept booking him in matches despite his insistence he shouldnt be working. I think he even did a hardcore match with Terry Funk (although Bret said Terry took the bulk of the bumps and did his best to take care of him having known the situation). After all that time, just getting sicker and feeling worse, he went to a specialist (coincidentally the head doctor for the NHL) who confirmed he had a serious concussion and had to stop immediately.
Point is, I'm sure he got a concussion from Goldberg's kick, but I believe he may have made it worse continuing to work with it.

In one match alone within about 10 seconds of each other, he dropped Meng on his head from a vertical suplex and then threw Jimmy Hart onto his face like a dart.
It’s one thing to be green. Everyone was guilty of that when new. But Goldberg was flat out dangerous. And you can’t blame it on being a former athlete new to wrestling because Lex Luger, Steve McMichael, Randy Savage and Darren Drozdov all played either pro or semi pro ball and none of them were dangerous. "“I sat in Dr. Meeuwisse’s office in Calgary. He noticed that I was slurring my words. The doctor said, ‘I can feel a hole in the back of your neck the size of a quarter…’
“He felt around the back of my skull. ‘This part here feels like hamburger. I hate to be the one to have to tell you this, but your career is probably over…’”

There was huge pressure for Bret to play through the injury, not to mention that PCS was not taken seriously back then. Heck, even the NHL is still battling the importance of CTE in disabling its players after thier careers (esp enforcers).

I think it was on that documentary where Eric Bischoff said “who’s the more experienced talent?” Saying Bret should’ve taken more responsibility of that match. Yes, the risks are real. They’re always real. So everytime they go out, they shouldn’t think they’re going to get hurt, but understand, that it’s not impossible that injuries can happen. I worked construction, and we all respected the risks and did our jobs and did what it took to avoid injuries, and with all that said, injuries are still very possible
I get it too, WCW needed a new star, saw Goldberg training and said there he is, send him out. Shame it happened, but like Stevie said, I’m glad too that Goldberg said, “I’ve said sorry enough”

Studies on Muay Thai, MMA, Boxers and kick boxers have shown that repeated sub concussive blows will cause more brain damage than big time concussive blows will.
That’s why boxers take more brain damage than mma fighters, or Thai or kick boxers. Most of their thrown strikes are aimed towards the head, and the gloves spread out the point of impact, which honestly just rattles the brain more.
MMA gloves are small and sharp, and provides a concentrated point for a quicker knock out.. and less brain damage.
You’ll take more brain damage going 3/5 rounds verses being knocked flat out.

"“I sat in Dr. Meeuwisse’s office in Calgary. He noticed that I was slurring my words. The doctor said, ‘I can feel a hole in the back of your neck the size of a quarter…’
“He felt around the back of my skull. ‘This part here feels like hamburger. I hate to be the one to have to tell you this, but your career is probably over…’”
You can't get those two injuries from being kicked in the side of the face. That can't happen on this planet. Bret's blaming a guy for ruining his career and life instead of taking accountability.

I can honestly speak to how much a single concussion can change a person. I've suffered multiple, went through PCS, dealt with them before there was protocol. It truly can alter someone's personality to a point where you don't see the things you're doing as anything differently. One of the absolute worst things a person who is concussed, or is suffering from PCS can go through is an emotionally significant event. Such as losing a legendary career to an accident. When you should be giving your brain healing time, you're worrying about paying your bills, your legacy, your family, and everything else. Your brain is in overdrive when it should be on autopilot. I've witnessed it with friends as much as I've gone through it myself. It can cause permanent changes to a person, and often times leaves them bitter.
Even though I do believe it was an accident. You have to factor in Bret getting dazed twice earlier in the match. Even if he knew 1000 times before how to take that move. Confusion on top of confusion can make you do things you normally wouldn't do.
Factor in the stroke. Which I've also witnessed as something that can change a person, as a close family member had one and went from being happy all the time to have uncharacteristically bad moods. All of these can have long-term effects to create a bitter person. Not to mention all the money left on the table for someone like Bret Hart.
As someone who took himself so seriously, and the business. The bitterness makes sense when factoring in all these other things. I just hope for Bret's sake he can one day figure out what it is he needs to move past this. I know how extremely difficult that can be given trauma to the brain, but carrying around that albatross only adds weight and stress he really doesn't need.
Wish both men nothing but the best and good health. Certainly wish this situation could have ended differently.
