edmund gwenn is the best ever movie santa
I enjoyed your reaction. The actor in this film is my favorite Santa Claus. There have been others in movies but Mr. Gwenn set the bar high.
...glad you liked it.
This and THE RIGHT STUFF are my two all-time favorite movies. I think the message of the movie it to retain the hope of childhood as we navigate the often harsh world of adulthood and use Santa Claus as a role model for love and kindness.
Oh, I haven't watched THE RIGHT STUFF. I'll add it to my list 😉
It would do a lot of good to the world to have more people that spread love and kindness 😊
A whip is never used to strike a horse. It's used for the sound that it makes (the crack) to make the horse or reindeer go faster.
I believe "actually striking horses with a whip" was once a thing, but not anymore because it's a cruel method.
It's good to know that most people only use it to make the whipping sound now.
They are used on racehorses but they're not hit hard. They tap a "tattoo" to match the rhythm of the horse running, urging him to stay the course.
That's a riding crop not a whip.@@catherinelw9365
My mother went with the logical escape clause; Santa is only real if you believe he is. There's no danger in fantasy for kids under eight, because their thinking is magical anyway. At that age they begin to grasp cause and effect, as a year earlier they began to develop independent morality. That's why understanding the stages of cognitive growth in a child's mind are important .Adult cognitive intelligence begins to develop at 13, but the amygdala, the seat of emotions is still running the show, until our frontal lobes in the neo cortex mature
enough to suppress it at around the age of 22.
We experience life differently at different ages. Let's hope we never forget how it feels to be a kid 😊
The postal worker who suggested they send the letters to the courthouse was played by a very young (at least comparatively) Jack Albertson. Mr. Albertson is a Tony Oscar and Emmy winner (although at that time he wasn't even important enough to have his name in the credits, I had to find out through IMDB. He is probably best known as Grandpa Joe in Willie Wonka and the chocolate factory.
best way for me to watch old movies is a channel like this. thanks a bunch. I am into it now
Always look forward to your reaction with a different perspective.
"Oh, Christmas isn't just a day, it's a frame of mind... and that's what's been changing. That's why I'm glad I'm here, maybe I can do something about it."
Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Thelma Ritter and Marlene Lyden.
Historical Fact: The Post Office Department was a Cabinet-level department of the executive branch of the U.S. Federal Government from 1829 until 1971.
Lost In Translation Fact: In the untranslated dialogue with the Dutch girl (Marlene Lyden), Kris (Edmund Gwenn) asks her what she wants for Christmas. She says she wants nothing, telling him she got her gift by being adopted by her new mother.
When Worlds Collide Fact: Both Macy's and Gimbel's were approached by the producers for permission to have them depicted in the film. Both wanted to see the finished film first before they gave approval. If either had refused, the film would have had to be extensively edited and re-shot to eliminate the references. Fortunately, at the test viewing both were pleased with the film and gave their permission.
Method Actor Fact: Unbeknownst to most parade watchers, Edmund Gwenn played Santa Claus in the actual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade held on November 28, 1946. Cameras were set up to capture some of this performance. He fulfilled the duties of most parade Santas, including addressing the crowd from Macy's marquee after it was over. He was introduced to the crowd by Philip Tonge, who played Mr. Shellhammer, and later unveiled the mechanical Christmas display windows to the accompaniment of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker (1892). This gesture symbolized the opening of the Christmas season there.
Thanks for the fun facts! 😊
henryyellow ...My pleasure. I feel bad that A Christmas Story (1983) was removed, but I hope that you enjoyed those facts as well.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
The title of the movie has a double-meaning - the one being who Kris was, but the other was the "miracle" of having the two bitter rivals, CEO's of Macy's and Gimbels, shake hands in a truce of sorts in the spirit of christmas. At the time, the two biggest department stores in America was Macy's and Gimbels, each of which had their flagship store located on 34th St., a block apart. To contemporary audiences, a well-known expression in regards to this epitome of business rivalry was "Would Macy's tell Gimbels?"
By the time of the remake of this film, the rivalry was long forgotten. They had to skirt the concept, which I think weakened this recent movie.
For years and years, I had supposed R.H. Macy in this movie was the real guy, since his acting seems so stilted. But R.H. Macy founded his store in the 1870's and by the 1940's, it was no longer owned by the family. (The Gimbel brothers likewise founded their store in the 1840's.)
I realized the handshake held some significance when Gailey mentioned it during a scene. It seems that the relationship between Macy and Gimbels is more than just competition between two companies.
I'm sure the American audiences at the time understood the "hand shake" better. I, on the other hand, was not familiar with these stores before this.
Thanks for sharing 😊
Yes, this is many decades before it was required to show ID to get a job
Come to think of it, I didn't believe in Santa Claus either, especially since I grew up in Japan and no one (at least in my neighborhood) had fireplaces. Besides, it's unbelievable that an old guy can climb down a chimney without hurting himself and without getting soot on his red Santa suit.
I guess for us who live in places without chimneys and fireplaces, parents have to come up with different Santa Claus stories 😂
15:16 Henry, you have superpowers to see the future! 😃 Did you get them from Jor-El when you were on Krypton?🤔
I've had gum stuck in my hair as a kid. So I can imagine what would happen 😂
I’m 69 and I believe in Santa Claus. The spirit of Saint Nicholas is real. Christmas🎶🪷🎶🎄❤️🔥
