what ive learned about this piece in particular is that each character in a way is singing the line that stuck with them. In the beginning its mostly the Proprietor and Booth singing to them, but by the end, each assassin sings the line that resonates with them the most. Such as Guiteau with being extremely different or Byck with failing.
I'm so happy that Michael Cerveris won the Tony for Best Lead Actor (in a musical) that year! 😄 Although I kinda wish both he and Denis O'Hare won, both their reditions of their assassins are my absolute favorite!
I enjoy this post for the simple reason of having played in a deeply talented amateur production of this in my home area. I played Charles Guiteau, who was Garfield's shooter. The bullet didn't kill Garfield, but as I understand it, the doctors unsanitary probing for the bullet and such infected and killed him. The performances are top notch! Thanks!!!!
the one who said "everybody is free to fail" is Mario Cantone and the "be a schooler" is Denis O'Hare, also nominated for best supp. actor. Neil is the one who sais "means you get to connect"
I'm so used to hearing Michael as Sweeney, it was really bizarre to hear him sing with a Southern accent! At first I was like, "WHAT THE HELL, WHY IS MICHAEL CERVERIS SINGING WITH A SOUTHERN ACCENT?" And then I realized, "Oh...wait, John Wilkes Booth was from the South..."
Oh look! Another Sondheim show for me to become obsessed with. I shall have to get started with that right away. You can tell I'm a Sondheim nerd, right? My username's a fricken Sondheim song (albeit not my favorite)
Michael won as best supporting actor and the show won for best revival of a musical. I unfortunately don't have the Ballads, I remember that I saw tha Ballad of Booth on youtube, but I think that the owner removed the video :(
I agree, Victor Garber was outstanding in the original version. However, overall, the entire cast was outstanding. Especially NPH, I really like his rendition of the ballads over the last Ballader.
Well, this is the reprise at the end of the show. Are you sure you don't mean the opening number with the Proprietor? Oh, this was written by Sondheim too.
Wonder World of Sondheim ...say if that were a theme park I would go to it. GangfightLand! AssassinLand! DemonBarberLand with the Chair Of Death ride ! And so many more! It's fun for the whole family!
I agree. Though I don't really like Barbour as much as I liked Terence Mann. The Gun Song... Barbour nailed anger, but I didn't really feel sorry for him the way I did with Mann.
I appreciate what you're saying in terms of the artistic merits of their works... But in terms of technical musical ability, there's actually no comparison between the two. Also remember that Sonheim wrote music and lyrics during a career which spanned the best part of four decades, whereas Larson only wrote two musicals, so in that sense as well you're not really comparing like for like. For Sondheim's contemporaries who do compare, I'd suggest the likes of Jason Robert Brown and Stephen Schwartz.
Did you watch the show? The real conspiracy was that all successful or attempted presidential assassins appeared before Oswald and convinced him to do it. That’s the real conspiracy.
@@Dreadnought26 Thanks, yes I did see the full show and it's amazing. I know it's theatre but Oswald was never convicted of any crime. His conviction, only after he died, was also theatre.
The balladeer transitioning into Oswald is one of the single most brilliant pieces ever conceived for stage. Change my mind.
Why should I change your mind? You’re correct in saying that.

The American Dream, sondheim I love you and you scare the crap out of me.

I will never not be in love with guiteaus voice
I love this song to pieces - such a great cast. Especially Michael!
I love this musical. It's so underrated, though.

I'm auditioning for this show soon! Hope to get Guiteau or Booth.
I LOVE Neil Patrick Harris. I wish someone had footage of when he took over as the balladeer.
I like this song.

Oh thanks so much! This is great!
If you want to see more videos of Michael with Hair look for his videos in Fame!!! They're awesome!!! And that's his real hair!!
If Trump gets shot will this play get a revision?
I think Sondheim is too old. He's been promising Bunuel for years but can't seem to get it to stage.
We need an update for this question now lol
Brilliant!

@IndianaJoker No one remembers Byck :'( I love that role in this musical, though, it seems like one of the most challenging.
I love this song.....*sees NPH* I love this song even more
God, I really wish I could see this musical... :( It's not playing anywhere in the Midwest right now, is it?
Welp, time to add a new chapter in this show.
i remember reading that alexander gemignani was in this...which one is he?
Just closed the show...I played Guiteau :)
Everybody's got the right to be different (if they want to be) even though at times they go to extremes!
Well, this is the reprise at the end of the show. Are you sure you don't mean the opening number with the Proprietor?

Yes he is!! It's the hair, it makes it difficult to identify :P
Sorry about that last reply, I was logged on in my sister's account :P
he played Hinkley
@everybodyliesx I'm pretty sure it's Mario Cantone, who plays Anthony on Sex & the City
Yep!
Looking forward to a new version of this with an extra character. #Trump
His assassin will be the only character we’re allowed to like!
Thanks! =D
actually, Sondheim was a mentor and inspiration to Larson
I want to be in this show so bad.
Don't do it! You might accidentally hit Penny! Oh... wait...
Oof
I agree. Though I don't really like Barbour as much as I liked Terence Mann. The Gun Song... Barbour nailed anger, but I didn't really feel sorry for him the way I did with Mann.
my cousin was the original guy to thing the "everybody's free to fail" line
The one who sings after Michael is James Barbour
That is such a creepy song, for such a creepy show!!!
His name is James Barbour, I don't know much about him...
@itkapatanka *citation needed
0:08 sorry just got a rent flashback
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA XD YES!
I really hope Sondheim get's another show out soon he's starting ro get pretty old.
It -is- supposed to be a comedy. You were meant to laugh.
i happen to be a huge rent head and i believe that sondheim and jonathon larson are both equally awesome

If I laugh at this, with full knowledge of the context, does that make me psychotic?
this song is far too catchy for it's own good
Oh gosh please don't compare anything by Sondheim to rent!
I love this show, only trouble with it is that Lee Oswald didn't kill JFK!
Tf dude as of now there's very little proof saying Oswald DIDN'T do it
@@Amberrogers Opposite, actually

@@itkapatanka yes but I choose to unironically believe that’s what happened because the investigation afterwards was a clusterfuck
This show only has one act.
could be worse you could be sweetpollyplunkett101 :P
WHY DOES BOOTH HAVE TO BE HOT HE WAS EVIL.....darn you michael
I like his look with hair! But this Hair not his "Fame" hair, that looks like a crazy poodle...
He actually wasn't evil. He was a good person generally. He believed with his heart and sould that Abe Lincoln had destroyed his Union.
