"it feels like it's supporting you" The entire game is about overcoming emotional trauma and helping people along the way which'll support you on your journey to climb the mountain Celeste. So pretty spot on. For gameplay, it's a difficult, narrative driven precision platformer.
Like some other people said, this whole level is a recap of the previous chapters, but so is the music! Most of this track is a 1 minute-ish loop, but with 6 variations. So in-game it just loops that bit over and over, but dynamically changes when you get to the next part of the level. A first time player is definitely gonna be hearing this for longer than just 11 minutes. 2:09-3:22 Prologue 3:22-4:37 Chapter 1: Forsaken City (First Steps) 4:37-5:59 Chapter 2: Old Site (Resurrections) 5:59-7:08 Chapter 3: Celestial Resort (Checking In) 7:08-8:30 Chapter 4: Golden Ridge (Golden) 8:30-9:37 Chapter 5: Mirror Temple (In the Mirror) Each section mostly keeps the same melody going, as you heard. That melody originates from chapter 1's First Steps. What it borrows to embody all the other chapters is a lot of the specific synths/instruments and atmosphere, but also a couple backing melodies here and there. The first 30 seconds of the song is a callback to the melody accompanying a short scripted sequence during the prologue. The arpeggio that kicks in at chapter 2's section is the same as the one in Resurrections, but modulated a bit and sped up by A LOT to fit this song's key and tempo. *Insert like 10 more examples for all the different sections*. I think you get the point lol
Man, what a theme. No theme has inspired me to achieve a goal in a videogame like this one. Both the game and the music wants you to succeed at this point. It truly is an amazing feeling and I don't get tired of listening to this
You said in your reaction that you were expecting more of a "confrontational" tone from the final level. The track you were expecting is "Confronting Myself", which plays at the finale of the penultimate level and is definitely also worth a listen. Arguably, this penultimate level is the emotional climax of the game's whole story, and as you surmised, "Reach for the Summit" is basically your reward for getting through it, a "victory lap" up the mountain. Anyway, if you love platformers, you owe it to yourself to experience this game. It's one of the best in the genre, both for gameplay and story (and music, of course).
Celeste is a game about overcoming yourself. You're right to expect this song to be daunting and yet the reality is every single one of us that reached this point, man...there was no way we were giving up. The music reflects this mentality. We use all the failures and everything we learned to finally reach the top.
Celeste was a nominee for Game of the Year at that year's Game Awards (against God of War, Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, and Monster Hunter: World). One thing they do before announcing the winner at the award show is an orchestral medley of songs from each of the nominees. It was quite something to hear this music alongside all the others, though they did include at least one synthesizer in the arrangement to do justice to this game's sound.
thats insane! I am currently playing through some Celeste Mods (which the creator of Celeste highly encourages to do being so involved in the Kaizo Mario community and all), because I CAN NOT NOT PLAY CELESTE! Being a nominee in such a strong year as a 2D side scroller says it all
It was played by Lena Raine themselves during that night, and it was the opening of the medley as well! If anyone wants to easily find the performance "The Game Awards Orchestra GOTY Music 2018" will lead you right to it.
This part when you are climbing at a good rhythm almost so close to the peak and this music in the background cheering, is one of the most exciting moments that I ever had in a video game.
I'm still amazed that I'm the only one to request this theme, even after seeing several other Celeste themes on the list. And I'll admit, I almost didn't vote for it to be featured here in spite of that becuase it's not really an 'ice' theme outside of the entire game having a cold/ice aesthetic. Ironically, the game itself lacks a true ice level. The closest it comes is half a fire level as well ("Heart of the Mountain", which you've already head). But I'm glad you found it 'close enough' in spite of that. I could easily call this the most uplifting VGM song I've ever heard for the context of where it plays. The whole game is about climbing a mountain (the titular Celeste) that is both a physical and emotional challenge as the mountain helps you come to terms with yourself and your personal demons. The main character (Madeline, not the mountain) has just suffered a crippling setback that has sent her all the way back down to the bottom again, but in the process helped her finally come to terms with herself. So THIS song is about her literally speed-climbing the entire mountain again, going through abridged versions of all the previous stages in the process, which is why the theme kept changing to reflect each of them. During that last section, you've finally gotten back to where you left off and now must make the final push to reach the summit, with the music getting even more triumphant as the game now starts "counting down" how close you are to the summit with little signposts along the way. Then, after you're likely getting worn down by all the grueling platforming, you come across a set of binoculars that lets you look ahead through the rest of the level to see the flag on the summit, to give you that final push of "You're almost there! You can make it!" And the music fades out into that peaceful reverb as you finally do. My description probably doesn't do it justice, but there you go. :)
Hey i noticed you requested hideout helm for dk 64, i requested hideout helm 2, but im not sure if the titles got mixed up because some youtube titles be messing up the title, So just to make sure I didn't request the same song as you, did you request the one that you first hear when you enter level or the second one when you finish "that mission"?
@@calvinospina7307 I requested the one you first hear when you enter the level. I assume you picked the one that plays after, also known as Shutdown Stronghold?
@@TheBeserkerLord oh ok good, yea i picked shut down stronghold, the second one. Also, you requested army dilo Armageddon, Is that the second fight with army in crystal caves or the first one?

What makes this song even more uplifting is the fact that… it’s the first actually uplifting one in the game. Everything so far had been a struggle against the elements just as much as against the part of you that wants to give up. This is the first time that all of your being is focused only on this one goal: to reach for the summit. You keep following that momentum, until, eventually, you realize… you made it. You’re there. The reality sets in. All the tension falls off. And you just slow down and sigh in relief.
I think Celeste stands out for so many people similarly to how Undertale does. It's got great gameplay, and striking aesthetics, but on top of that has a really deep, emotional story. It's got a ton of heart and deals with themes of mental health and self worth. When you talked about how layered the music is~ The music in Celeste is deeply integral to the game. The soundscape for effects is actually incredibly minimal. It's mostly just wind, collisions, death, dash, with very few other things moving or activating. On top of this, the game plays like Super Meatboy where death is sudden and frequent, but there is 0 delay on respawning. So you are left without delay or punishment for failure, and simply rush challenges over and over until you overcome them. This casual speed reduces the pain of that grind, but if it were not backed up by incredible and engaging music and art, the repetition would become tiring very quickly. But with all of its elements working together the game - like this final track - lifts you up and encourages you to keep going. Celeste is incredible. It's one of the only games (or media of any kind) I've wanted to replay.
It is definitely a difficult game. It took me over 6000 deaths to get all the achievements. But in an unusual twist, it is a difficult game that is SUPPORTIVE of the player, as you noticed through the music. The game actually tells you to be proud of your death count, because it means you're learning.
The reason why i would hardly call this an ice theme is because this song is a mix of all the variations of the theme of the final level. Basically in the final level you get to revisit most of the area themes of the game in order and the music instrumentation changes depending on what area you are in. The whole game is about snow but i think there are a few other tracks which fit better with the snow theme in this game than this one. Still great track. Love celeste , got 500+ hours on it playing mods
It should be noted that the ost in this game hits differently when you are playing, like for example how the song starts during dialogue and transitions into gameplay during the song. Also the story/mood is very centered around how the main character is feeling at the time. In this sense you are right, it is uplifting.
Celeste is super easily one of the best indie osts from the last decade. There is a big part of remixes/variations as well in the soundtrack for each track for playing the harder optional challenges/levels and they slap REAL hard. Its very cathartic, its sad but also uplifting. It eases the soul in a way that very few games ever can. The music is HUGE part of why the game is great. Its one of the best indie experiences as well in terms of story and the way it is paced and the flow and gameplay actually challenges you to become a better gamer and accomplish feats you would never thought possible at your skill level. In many ways, it touches on what makes us human and how determination and will can beat all odds. Its beautiful beyond words, an emotional journey like no other and a one of a kind experience that I cannot recommend enough. This is NOT just a 2d platformer. Its a masterpiece in the gaming scene.
Just reading everyone else’s comments here has got me tearing up, I can feel everybody else’s love and appreciation for what this game and this track helped them with. What experience it gave them Of course I loved it too, but it amplifies what I feel, to have it reinforced by others. See what the same emotional thing did for them and know we all had our own internal reactions aligned in the same direction :)
Listen to this again just remind me how much i LOVE this game!!! :') and thank you for your fun commentary as well! (hopefully you get more Celeste songs sometime ^^ my other top favs are "Scattered and Lost" and "Farewell"🙏✨)
as some people has already mentioned how this track progression represents each chapter of the game i'd like to add more to that: the very beginning of the track has some pretty interesting symbolism as it's the exact same music cue used at the very end of the prologue as Madeline is trying to survive a collapsing bridge at the very beginning of her adventure. since chapter 7 involves her having to go through the entire thing from the beginning once more we hear that same cue once again, yet this time as the very _start_ of the song. then at 9:37 that is the beginning of the end section, the summit on itself, we hear it for the third and last time through Madeline's journey. also worth mentioning *_(spoilers warning)_* the entire melody is made out of Madeline's leitmotif changing through the instrument of each previous chapters and at some points (like the chapter 2 section and at points during the final summit section) also Badeline's, as both sides of her are now working together in harmony
It's a really nice victory lap kinda deal. It feels so good to practically breeze though parts of the stages you previously struggled with, especially with the sections of the songs playing specifically for whichever part you're on. It's really cool. And you're not wrong, bringing on Guacamelee, I thought about it the whole time I played Celeste. They've both got challenging, but rewarding platforming gauntlets in common.
It has a slow build, but I think that Golden sounds more snowy than Reach for the Summit. Has more of a desolate cold mountain vibe. Phendrana drifts from metroid and Snowpeak from LoZ Twilight Princess also give off that same feeling to me. Unrelated to the snowy theme but I'd like to see his reaction to Scattered and Lost from Celeste. That song has one of the craziest drum sections I've ever heard in VGM.
Celest falls into the genre of "Technical Platformers" with high difficulty but also very forgiving about failure, you typically just respawn right away and try it all again. Other similar games include Super Meat Boy, N+, and the very influential I want to be the Guy (although that is more of a "troll/Kaizo platformer"). While Celest is not a metroidvania, there are some similarities between some of the platforming challenges that it has and what is in Guacamelle or the Ori series.
My all-time piece from Celeste is "Farewell", from the farewell DLC! Actually paid for that request few months ago (or was it a year ago)? Was so excited cause I thought this was it when I saw the thumbnail, or that it would be a double feature! I'll stay patient :P
I first played the original Crash Bandicoot 1 as part of the N-Sane Trilogy in July 2023, and I found it so difficult and frustrating that I only played it for 5 hours.
Celeste is the hardest game anyone can beat. In terms of difficulty, the main story is more difficult than let's say your Mario but with the help of assist mode anyone can beat it. However if you up for the challenge the game offers optional collectables including Casette Tapes granting access to the B-Side of the stage (like the two sides of a Casette). These B-Sides are the Super Meat Boy, Kaizo level kinda stuff. Anyone can still beat it with assist mode, but still Celeste is very challenging if you want to do everything like intended. Also Funfact Celeste is one of the games with the most submitted Speedruns. Makes sense considering that the Devs are huge Speedrun fans and optimized the game to be pleasent for speedrunning. No RNG, no auto scrolling, in game timer that allows pauses between stages, the cutscenes are skippable and just a bunch of cool techniques for movement that make for incredibly fast times. It's super fun and satisfying to watch :D Ice and Snow themes? My first thoughts would be Route 216 (Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum), Flamesgrace (Octopath Traveler (1)) and Northeast Frost Street (Kirby and the Forgotten Lands). Curious to see if I got any hit^^
Idk abt that one, celeste is difficult, but not *that* difficult. The A-sides are *maybe* a bit more difficult than your average special world lvl in a mario game with the difference that celeste just respawns you at the start of the room with longer lvls, while mario lvls are shorter and simply spawn you back at the start (or the midway checkpoint ig), which overall leads to more deaths gained in a celeste lvl than a mario lvl. B-sides are where it picks up and becomes a good bit more challenging, but still very fair, same goes for C-sides which are very short. Ofc there are some difficult rooms in between, stuff like ch. 7-C, but overall not the end of the world. Chapter 9 punches you in the face and then spits on you, but tbf, thats the champions road equivalent so might as well. So yeah, celeste isnt easy, but its also really not as hard as people make it seem and certainly not "the hardest game anyone cam beat".
@@kurokofs113 I count golden strawberries as collectables and in terms of difficulty Chapter 9 golden strawberry is pretty high up there in terms of difficulty in videogames not including rng bs or inhuman inputs (unless you see that in itself as bs which is fine. But like you said before Celeste is very fair due to its design). I suppose if "beat" just means main story than there might be more difficult games that have equivalent options to make them extraordinary easy but tbh I can't think of a more difficult one that I could confidently say anyone can beat. Anyways, opinions differ and that's fine^^
@@Huy_YT yeah golden strawberries can certainly be very difficult, so if you count those then its up there, although then i would compare it to stuff like Doom's ultra nightmare which i would probably put above it (aside from ch.9s golden strawberry maybe). if you dont count golden strawberrys, then plenty of Fromsoft games are more difficult imo, along with stuff like cuphead (which is also incredibly short but requires much more attention in the moment to moment gameplay than anything in celeste) and maybe even some monster hunter stuff. In the end it does come down to opinions obviously and 2 different people will find different things more difficult, so there isnt really a consensus you can reach aside from it not being easy by any means.
… also bro, Crash Bandicoot is RUTHLESS if you’re going for 100+% completion. Which Celeste is a lot like. It’s eminently beatable if you’re just going for the story, but its difficulty is infinitely scalable the more you want to push yourself.
Great video and song! You should totally react to sonic x shadow generations space colony ark act 1 next. But if you have time u can listen to both the Generations remix and the original song. (SA2 Final rush)

Anyways, opinions differ and that's fine^^
man, the b-sides were the most fun satisfying part of the game imo. i don't know if there's a better platformer than that
@@Huy_YT yeah golden strawberries can certainly be very difficult, so if you count those then its up there, although then i would compare it to stuff like Doom's ultra nightmare which i would probably put above it (aside from ch.9s golden strawberry maybe).
if you dont count golden strawberrys, then plenty of Fromsoft games are more difficult imo, along with stuff like cuphead (which is also incredibly short but requires much more attention in the moment to moment gameplay than anything in celeste) and maybe even some monster hunter stuff.
In the end it does come down to opinions obviously and 2 different people will find different things more difficult, so there isnt really a consensus you can reach aside from it not being easy by any means.
It indeed is a game that you want to recommend to everyone once you get into it😂
fitting tittle and quite literally what she is doing. The game is about climbing a mountain.
I LOVE CELESTE!!!
its very hard for me to not feel strong emotions listening to this track
… also bro, Crash Bandicoot is RUTHLESS if you’re going for 100+% completion. Which Celeste is a lot like. It’s eminently beatable if you’re just going for the story, but its difficulty is infinitely scalable the more you want to push yourself.

celeste refers to the mountain.
