My high school recently did this show, it was my second time playing Shrek, and I was handed these lyrics. While I *love* "Give an inch, and they drag me a mile...", the other lyric changes dull the impact of the song dramatically. I, like you, preferred the original lyrics to these. These show a deliberate attempt at making this song less dark. "Gonna dig a moat" and "one easy chair" are comic images, wresting the song from its angry roots into a cartoonish image. This is a dark moment in the show, it's earned its place. It annoys me that someone felt the moment was "too dark" for the show. It feels totally natural. By that point, the Scottish accent and the man in the costume isn't even factoring in, you just totally buy it. I'm with you, man. These lyrics are mostly kinda garbage.
1:18 "I'm gonna dig me a moat I'm talking ten feet deep and then maybe I'll get some some sleep piranhas keeping guard so look before you leap into my moat" that was original 2nd verse to build a wall but was changed when the show went to broadway its cool how they brought it back for the national tour
As a major fan of Brian d'Arcy James... I like your take on this song just as much as his. Well done. Especially with the option-up on "myself" at the end there.
I was just looking for that short piece in the movie where shrek says "he'll build a wall around his swamp". But now i found out theres an entire 3+ minute song devoted entirely to that mentioned wall-building. This should make the trump jokes more interesting.

Sometimes the lyrics come from the shows as they were before Broadway (all Broadway shows have a pre-Broadway run somewhere else in the world. The show usually undergoes a lot of changes between the pre-Broadway run and the Broadway run).
It’s quite common that the lyrics differ when they are released for amateur performances. Infact, 95% of these lyrics are a from the original Seattle tryout production that premiered before going to Broadway.
I know this was 5 years ago, but whatever production you saw must of used the Broadway lyrics. This production used the National tour lyrics, which are the automatic lyrics you get when licensing the show.
1. This guy did a great job singing as well as acting. 2. I do feel however that transposing this song was a poor choice. Brian D'Arcy James singing this in its original key gave it a much deeper meaning. He truly sounded hurt when he would belt those high notes. 3. You are all very original in all of your Donald Trump comments. Haha, get a life.
