They are both great in their own way. Eric was my favorite until I saw Klaus on the Vampire Diaries. I just liked his personality little better. But they are similar age, strong, smart and powerful. They both fell in love with a blonde and exposed their softer sides because of them. For me the best characters on their shows. Definitely the most interesting ones.
I watched both these series in their entirety (True Blood & Vampire Diaries). And I really don't know who would win between the two (different universes, different powers). HOWEVER, I can say I would absolutely be rooting for Eric ALL THE WAY! I FUCKING HAAATE KLAUS!!! He is essentially Joffrey with Vampire powers. And the perfect example of why you don't give weak men power. Klaus is also the reason I never watched the Originals.
They would be best friends and unstoppable ! Klaus would edge him in regards of raw power and strength due to his Hybrid nature. Remember new hybrid beats a 500 yr old vamp pretty easily. So klaus is a 1000+ hybrid and eric is a warrior 1000+ yr old vamp vikings both of them are great at fighting. I truly feel Klaus wins by Power and Skill. Character-wise I love The Original Hybrid Klaus Mikealson because: 1. He is a master strategist(he even used his own impulsive nature and anger as a weapon as he did against his Aunt Dalia), 2.Sure he fancied Caroline and Cami and they helped him change they were not the ones that truly inspired him to change him it was the prospect of being a father (which to him was an impossibility until he became a hybrid) he didn't much care for romantic love he usually didn't let it hinder his plans(he declared his love to them but didn't pine for them like hopeless romantics). 3.He was only truly unraveled by the idea of being a father. 4.he is not just a powerful being with an agenda he is more than that he has a actual hobby(painting, how many anti-heros have a hobby that they actually indulge in?) and it gives his character a layered quality that is just awesome. 5.most importantly even tough he changed a lot he did not go uncharacteristically and unrecognizably soft he remained ruthless when he felt like he needed to be. And I think that Klaus would also win in one on one battle with Eric even on his worst days.

While chained with silver he was severely injured and when untied he got up and healed himself in just a second and a bomb couldn't destroy him but made him injured he was laughing and bill compton said to sookie that that eric healing ability is very fast . 6) Speed :- Eric northman is way way faster than any original how let me explain , Eric northman speed is too high because in an episode when bill compton tries to teach jessica some fighting techniques he was way to fast I mean he was literally teleporting everywhere and it was said that the more older the vampire the faster , stronger and better he gets I am not finished here Eric northman killed 10 - 12 highly trained guards within a second ripped of a man's heart in a millisecond he has tremendous stamina and even sookie stackhouse was surprised to see Eric northman moving so fast. 7)Sunlight :- here is a disadvantage but not really if he injects fairy's blood time to time he can easily walk in sunlight like he has the ability to fly and he is way faster than an original so it's not really a disadvantage for him . 8) Silver cannot kill him but can make him weaker Remember this. From what I’ve learned watching the shows (I still have to finish the Originals) Werewolves aren’t as strong as Vampires. They just aren’t. In the originals what do they have. They can walk in the light, they can procreate, they have venomous bite. They are very savage. But are they even close to being an equal to a vampire. I don’t think so at all. If you have a vampire that is half wolf what are those strengths? He can be in the sun, he has a venomous bite he can procreate. He is not owned by the moon right so he can change whenever. But is he stronger? Faster? If you dilute pure vampire dna with a lesser creature it’s hard to see how Klaus would beat a pure blood like Eric. Hell fighting Godric or Macklyn who is a hybrid of a fairie and vampire and over 5,000 years old and has light coming out of him. Hmmm but back to Eric. Once Eric drinks Bills Lilith blood I mean I don’t think Klaus can beat that. I think if I’m the shows they would elevate a wolf’s skills and strength then yeah but they don’t. Even in the first season the wolves needed Klaus blood to have his strength which tells me they really aren’t that strong if they need to manipulate him to give his blood like that. If you have watched TVD and The Originals I don't think you fully understand why Klaus is the way he is So let me lay it down for you (what I understood). Also I have nothing against Eric Nortman I am just validating Klaus. Firstly in TVD mythology when you turn into a vampire your emotions and feelings are heightened so Klaus already being a werewolf(who also feels the same effect of emotions as a turned vampire naturally) by birth feels 2 folds intensity of emotions than what a normal werewolf or vampire would feel as he is The Hybrid (A true Hybrid). Secondly He was almost constantly on the run from his step-father who abused Klaus all his mortal life and after the revelation of his werewolf nature wants to kill him and is also in possession of the only weapon that can kill him. Emotional stability like the one you think Klaus should have only comes when you can settle down and are not uprooted or are not faced with the abuse and humiliation of your past time and time again. Add all that to never experience a vital part of himself due to a curse his mother put on him (a constant feeling of being incomplete). If you study his character you would see that he only acts restlessly and impulsively (not childishly) in some situations all of which stems from the things I just mentioned. The beauty of Klaus Mikealson as a character is that it's layered it's a mix of refinement(as evident by his intellect, skill and knowledge) and rawness of of soul (as evident by things he experienced and felt for a thousand years). Also in TVD mythology vampires can't procreate after Klaus broke his curse and his werewolf side was on longer dormant he could this turn of becoming a father in his story was the one thing that truly jolted him. I think if after a 1,000 years of believing you are never going to experience something ( like fatherhood in Klaus's case) you are justified to unravel or stop in your tracks trying to figure out what to do. My point is Klaus Mikealson's character is justified through his story to have flaws like the ones you call childish. But those flaws never affected his strength (And his strength isn't normal either it's both of an Original vampire's and of an Alpha werewolf's), intellect knowledge or ability to strategize (he even used his own flaws as tools in his strategies multiple times both in TVD and TO). You can love Eric Nortman but those who considered Klaus Mikealson as the best do so on pretty solid grounds. We kind of think that Klaus is off-limits for such showdown and Eric should be compared to Elijah Mikealson not Klaus.
